"Europe is Our Playground." That guitar extended into infinity. Reminds me of "Station to Station" and evokes a similar decadence.

first I think it's time I kick a little verse! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 17 August 2013 15:15 (twelve years ago)

The strange thing is, when I started this one I actually thought it would be easy for me to pick a favourite. While not as consistent in terms of quality as the B-sides put out by the first line-up, I'm looking at this list and I can see about four or five songs here that could easily take my vote(!)

I'm torn between Together, Europe Is Our Playground, Sound Of The Streets and This Time.

I was surprised to read recently Brett thinks Duchess is the worst song he's ever written. It's not great but surely something from the New Morning era or maybe something from his first solo album must be worse.

Kitchen Person, Saturday, 17 August 2013 15:43 (twelve years ago)

There was a "Worst Suede Song" thread on the official Suede forum in which Brett posted about a month or so ago saying 'Stay Together' was what he considered to be the worst Suede song! I can only assume he dislikes it because the song might bring back some really crap memories for him. He loathes the video to that song with a passion, too. When did he say that 'Duchess' was the worst song he's ever written, do you have a link?

I'm not a big fan of 'Duchess', it has to be said, but I definitely wouldn't consider it to be the worst song he's ever written. The title track of Head Music is definitely down there. Never really liked 'Asbestos' either.

Street Life might be my pick or maybe even Positivity, that may not be the worst but putting it out as a lead single was the worst decision they ever made.

Kitchen Person, Saturday, 17 August 2013 16:05 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, I never thought 'Positivity' was a great single choice, but I actually don't mind the song at all. 'Streetlife', on the other hand, I've always thought was absolute garbage; musically, lyrically, the lot.

I'm trying to think of what would have been the ideal choice for lead single from A New Morning now... 'Obsessions', perhaps?

I wanna live like C'MOWN! people (Turrican), Saturday, 17 August 2013 16:40 (twelve years ago)

I really like You Belong To Me which was put as a bonus track on A New Morning, that could have worked as a single. Obsessions is the only other contender.

Kitchen Person, Saturday, 17 August 2013 17:16 (twelve years ago)

Oh yeah, I forgot about 'You Belong To Me'! That and 'Oceans' should have both been on the album proper.

"Sound of the Streets" for me here

xpost Those two songs and Simon (from Positivity) were the best songs from that era by a long way.

Love the solo in that one.

I thought One Hit To The Body wasn't terrible

PaulTMA, Saturday, 17 August 2013 17:29 (twelve years ago)

xpost:

'Simon' is very good. Brett's voice wasn't at its best around that time, but I think his cracked delivery on 'Simon' really suits the song, especially considering its subject matter!

I wanna live like C'MOWN! people (Turrican), Saturday, 17 August 2013 17:30 (twelve years ago)

I'd say the biggest stinkers on A New Morning for me would be 'Streetlife', 'Astrogirl' (zzz), 'Untitled' (zzz)... I'm not all that big on 'Beautiful Loser', either. So, the middle part of the album, pretty much.

I wanna live like C'MOWN! people (Turrican), Saturday, 17 August 2013 17:33 (twelve years ago)

One Hit To The Body is pretty decent yeah. I'd say Lonely Girls is one of the worst offenders on there, that shouldn't have even been a B-side. I defended that album at the time, I really don't know what I was thinking.

Agree about Brett's vocal on Simon, part of why that song is so great.

The beat of the concrete street

Suede really should have split up after Head Music. At the very least, demand for their reunion would have come much sooner.

PaulTMA, Saturday, 17 August 2013 19:29 (twelve years ago)

I could have sworn the Tears album was OK. Was I wrong?

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 18 August 2013 01:33 (twelve years ago)

i was thinking about adding Suede to the artist poll, Oasis is the last listing so i won't add it at this time. do you think there is enough interest to do Suede?

i think my vote is going to go to "Europe Is Our Playground" but have some time to listen before voting.

voted "this time"
forgot "bentwoods boys" was on here. might've gone for that.

I'm pretty liberal. I can enjoy some Mac Miller once in a while (brimstead), Wednesday, 21 August 2013 05:28 (twelve years ago)

"Europe", but lotsa good stuff from this era as well. Always had a week spot for Sadie.

Had a feeling 'Europe Is Our Playground' would take this, and all the songs that got a vote are definitely amongst the best tracks here. 'Another No One' and 'Bentswood Boys' both sadly overlooked, though.
