first person to say, like, bright eyes gets to live with themselves. that seems punishment enough.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 9 October 2002 21:11 (twenty-three years ago)

No Bright Eyes because he's indie rock? Or because he's rock, not rap? If you're allowing guitar-musics, then Dylan owns this thread.

A.V. Alexandre (Keiko), Wednesday, 9 October 2002 21:15 (twenty-three years ago)

no, no, i mean rap.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 9 October 2002 21:16 (twenty-three years ago)

what's a verse?

dk, Wednesday, 9 October 2002 21:18 (twenty-three years ago)

verse

\Verse\, n. [OE. vers, AS. fers, L. versus a line in writing, and, in poetry, a verse, from vertere, versum, to turn, to turn round; akin to E. worth to become: cf. F. vers. See Worth to become, and cf. Advertise, Averse, Controversy, Convert, Divers, Invert, Obverse, Prose, Suzerain, Vortex.] 1. A line consisting of a certain number of metrical feet (see Foot, n., 9) disposed according to metrical rules.

Note: Verses are of various kinds, as hexameter, pentameter, tetrameter, etc., according to the number of feet in each. A verse of twelve syllables is called an Alexandrine. Two or more verses form a stanza or strophe.

2. Metrical arrangement and language; that which is composed in metrical form; versification; poetry.

Such prompt eloquence Flowed from their lips in prose or numerous verse. --Milton.

Virtue was taught in verse. --Prior.

Verse embalms virtue. --Donne.

3. A short division of any composition. Specifically: (a) A stanza; a stave; as, a hymn of four verses.

Note: Although this use of verse is common, it is objectionable, because not always distinguishable from the stricter use in the sense of a line. (b) (Script.) One of the short divisions of the chapters in the Old and New Testaments.

Note: The author of the division of the Old Testament into verses is not ascertained. The New Testament was divided into verses by Robert Stephens [or Estienne], a French printer. This arrangement appeared for the first time in an edition printed at Geneva, in 1551. (c) (Mus.) A portion of an anthem to be performed by a single voice to each part.

4. A piece of poetry. ``This verse be thine.'' --Pope.

Blank verse, poetry in which the lines do not end in rhymes.

Also:
The "Word to mother, I'm dangerous..." verse of "Gimme The Loot"

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Wednesday, 9 October 2002 22:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Jess, that's not the definition of verse you asked for at all!!

I like rap music a lot, but I really don't have the reserve of knowledge to answer a question like this. Maybe it's just because I'm not a lyrics person, but this makes me really sad.

Scoob Lover's amazing cameo (pun intended) on Big Daddy Kane's "On the Bugged Tip," off the first album Long Live the Kane. "I got the um hiccups, excuse me, sorry / Score a hundred Gs every time I play Atari" is just a time capsule from 1988, and his whole worldview rocks: "Since I'm an only child you might think I'm spoiled / Drive all the way to Maaco just to change my oil".

Matt C., Thursday, 10 October 2002 00:12 (twenty-three years ago)

twas simpler times when maaco represented the height of excess.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Sunday, 16 March 2003 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Rakaa shined on the Blackalicious track "Passion."
He sounds better with Xcel and Gab than on his normal
stuff.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Sunday, 16 March 2003 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
In 1984 I was hospitalized for approaching perfection /
Slowly screwing my way across Europe, they had to make a correction /
Broken and smokin' where the infrared deer plunge in the digital snake /
I tell you they make it so you can't shake hands, when they make your hands shake
Silver Jews, "Random Rules"

-- Famous Athlete (ofte...), October 10th, 2002.

I've been wondering what that third line about infrared deer and digital snake is about; any ideas?
