Write-in for The Third Reich. They had Wagner and Furtwangler.

I figured it wouldn't be fair if I didn't finally listen to "Operation: Mindcrime" first, so I did. That album is pretty bad and silly, so I'd say ... Steve Reich. Also, Steve Reich is awesome.

I'm probably one of the few people in the world who likes the music of both John Cage and Cage the Elephant.

Have never heard Queensrÿche (yet). Can't stand Yanni although not particularly a fan of Iannis Xenakis either. Bryan Adams isn't awful.

Sorry! I gave it a shot, but really hated the sound of the drums and the guitar solos on it. I guess otherwise it was OK.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 25 August 2013 18:43 (eleven years ago)

i think it's pronounced "Ryshe"

i pronounced it that way for years but Wiki says hard k. not that i take that as gospel.

haven't decided which way to go here yet.

the arpeggio as will and idea (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 25 August 2013 21:59 (eleven years ago)

it's "ryshe". not to be a total douche but i've met the man and people who associate and collaborate with him and that's what they say too, and that's how folks pronounce it on stage before performances and talks he gives

still deciding my vote though. i saw queensryche open for iron maiden once and it was epic

reggie (qualmsley), Sunday, 25 August 2013 23:03 (eleven years ago)

I haven't ever seen Queensryche, but I dig their music a lot. I saw Steve Reich do Drumming in I think '82 at Dorothy Chandler and it was life-altering, amazing, but then I saw the premiere of WTC 9/11 a couple years ago and it was just not up to snuff - I love Desert Music but after that, i don't know, as with Glass when they lose sight of phase music and start incorporating its ideas as tropes instead of governing principles the savor goes out of it for me. Queensryche, on the other, has fights where the singer pulls a knife on people and shit. That right there is cult as fuck so I'm leaning toward Queensryche here

have to say halford (the band, pre-priest reunion) was the opener opener and of course dude can wail like a banshee but he did not upstage geoff tate one bit. (and then maiden's triple guitar attack while dickinson ran around and swung from pulleys and other crazy stage props (they had a two-story wicker man with confetti flames and metal babes dancing around inside it during "wicker man") was one of the best things i've ever seen but that's getting way off topic)

reggie (qualmsley), Sunday, 25 August 2013 23:20 (eleven years ago)

Well, if we're really talking Queensryche sum total, there is more music by them I would not want to listen to, ever, than music by Reich, who has made several hours of music I'd happily sit through. I agree his recent stuff hasn't been up to snuff. Like,

as with Glass when they lose sight of phase music and start incorporating its ideas as tropes instead of governing principles the savor goes out of it for me.
is totally OTM. But hasn't Queensryche been coasting off "Mindcrime" for some time now?

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 25 August 2013 23:56 (eleven years ago)

Queensryche are awful
