I think all you need to support your theory, Charlie, is to refer to the entire ghastly collection that is NOW That's What I Call Music! and all its increasingly shit-house bastard offspring.

blueski, Thursday, 10 October 2002 07:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Hang on, Blur don't have an album with Music in the title!

Music for the Jilted Generation is still classic, though.

An exception that proves the rule is something that makes you realise there is a rule. Like when you hear an album with Music in the title and think. "This is pretty good! Which is strange, because now that I think about it, usually albums with Music in the title are shit."

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 10 October 2002 08:17 (twenty-three years ago)

This "Exception that proves the rule" thing. The word "proves" in this case can be thought of as meaning "tests". Any legal person would be familiar with this. You could say "An exception has been found which has caused the validity of the rule to be brought into question." Using the word "proves" in its more common sense renders the sentence meaningless.

mt, Saturday, 12 October 2002 11:55 (twenty-three years ago)

did the movie 'sound of music' have a soundtrack released?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 12 October 2002 19:37 (twenty-three years ago)

What kind of rule is that? You cite three albums which are supposed to be shite of which one (by Blur) doesn't even exist and three exceptions which are supposed to confirm the rule. That's total bollocks!

I think most albums with "Music" in the title are bloody classic. I can add:
- Duffy & Kenendy: Music in Colors
- Oregon: Music of Another Present Era
- Steve Reich: Music for a Large Ensemble / Music for Mallet Instruments

Of the ones cited, I consider classics:
- John Cale: Music for a New Society
- Lou Reed: Metal Machine Music
- Talking Heads: Fear of Music
- Boards of Canada: Music Has the Right to Children
- Depeche Mode: Music for the Masses
- Brian Eno: Music for Films
- Galaxie 500: This Is Our Music
- Chuck Berry: Rockn'Roll Music
