Your Possible POLLS: Pink Floyd's 'The Final Cut'

As a necessary corrective to all the Piper-love going round at the moment, and because (IMHO) Waters Floyd >>>>> Barrett Floyd, here's a poll of Pink Floyd's darkest, grimmest album.

although I have spent alot more time with this album than it deserves. Probably the most well-recorded bad album I can think of

"Turkey In The Straw" coming from someplace in the clouds (Sparkle Motion), Tuesday, 27 August 2013 19:29 (twelve years ago)

Going with the Gilmour-crooned "Not Now John," which hasn't aged at all well.

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 27 August 2013 19:30 (twelve years ago)

Remind me to come round and get snarky the next time you guys run a poll on an album I don't like

my father will guide me up the stairs to bed (anagram), Tuesday, 27 August 2013 19:30 (twelve years ago)

probably "Gunner's Dream" or "Southampton Docks" but I haven't heard this in forever.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 27 August 2013 19:31 (twelve years ago)

I wasn't being snarky. You'll KNOW when that happens. But it's true ... "Not Now John" hasn't aged well.

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 27 August 2013 19:33 (twelve years ago)

I probably haven't listened to this since 1988 Not sure I want to revisit it, but I remember "The Final Cut" being my fave.

Thought it was a bit disingenuous of Gilmour to be all "It's just a Roger solo album!" and then turn around and do Monetary Lapse of Reason without even Rick or Nick.

Hold on ... Nick played on Momentary Lapse.., did he not?

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 27 August 2013 19:36 (twelve years ago)

from STE's review:

This is more like a novel than a record, requiring total concentration since shifts in dynamics, orchestration, and instrumentation are used as effect.

If I WANNA READ A NOVEL I'LL READ A NOVEL

first I think it's time I kick a little verse! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 27 August 2013 19:37 (twelve years ago)

yes he did, so did Wright in fact but he was on a wage

my father will guide me up the stairs to bed (anagram), Tuesday, 27 August 2013 19:37 (twelve years ago)

Ah, I stand corrected -- Carmine Appice played on it instead of Nick.. Go know.

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 27 August 2013 19:38 (twelve years ago)

"not now john" is literally the worst song on this record

probably voting for "two suns in the sunset" gotta love that 9/8

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 27 August 2013 19:40 (twelve years ago)

I've heard differing accounts. But the accounts that stress his involvement limit his participation to hitting the toms a few times on one song. Keltner, Appice, and drum machines played on the rest of it.

xp

And yeah, I guess Wright did some stuff too:

Gilmour was contacted by Wright's new wife, Franka, who asked if Wright could contribute to the new album. Gilmour considered the request; the keyboardist had left the band in 1979, and there were certain legal obstacles to his re-admittance, but after a meeting in Hampstead he was brought back in.[29] Gilmour later admitted in an interview with author Karl Dallas that Wright's presence "would make us stronger legally and musically". He was therefore employed as a paid musician, on a weekly wage of $11,000,[30] but his contributions were minimal. Most of the new keyboard parts had already been recorded, and so from February 1987 he played some background reinforcement on a Hammond organ, and a Fender Rhodes piano, along with several vocal harmonies. The keyboardist also performed a solo in "On the Turning Away", which was discarded, according to Wright "not because they didn't like it ... they just thought it didn't fit."[23] Gilmour later said: "Both Nick and Rick were catatonic in terms of their playing ability at the beginning. Neither of them played on this at all really. In my view, they'd been destroyed by Roger", a comment which clearly angered Mason, who reflected: "I'd deny that I was catatonic. I'd expect that from the opposition, it's less attractive from one's allies. At some point, he made some sort of apology." Mason did, however, concede that Gilmour was nervous about how the album would be perceived.[30]

the wall pt. 2: war and stuff

reissue improves the album massively by stuffing "when the tigers broke free" in the tracklisting

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 27 August 2013 20:50 (twelve years ago)

It's shorter than the Wall, so in that it's an improvement, but there's no way the best tracks on this (Gunner's Dream, Two Suns in the Sunset) stand up to the best tracks on the Wall.
On the other hand I doubt I could really give either of these records a listen all the way through anytime soon.

I really like the Wall though

Voted for 'Not Now John'. I very rarely find myself wanting to listen to The Final Cunt, really... in fact, can't really remember the last time I listened to it full!

god this isn't even remotely as bad as the division bell

i've never understood the ire toward this record at all. if you like the wall.... what's the problem here exactly?

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 27 August 2013 21:32 (twelve years ago)

i don't like The Wall maybe thats the problem.

also, i know lots of people who LOVE The Wall but hate The Final Cut

Saying "You like The Wall so you should like The Final Cut!" is a bit like saying "Hey, you like Blur so you should like the Kaiser Chiefs!". This record always came across to me as a bit of a dour, po-faced postscript to The Wall with lesser songs (like a low calorie Wall, almost), featuring none of the aspects of the Floyd sound that I enjoy the most on their '70s records.

Dog Man Star took a suck on a pill... (Turrican), Tuesday, 27 August 2013 21:38 (twelve years ago)

...and The Wall is dour enough in itself, which says something.

Dog Man Star took a suck on a pill... (Turrican), Tuesday, 27 August 2013 21:39 (twelve years ago)

well okay that helps a little but i honestly find myself preferring a lot of these songs; i also enjoy the ridiculous bombast

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 27 August 2013 21:39 (twelve years ago)

Don't the credits read "The final cut: By Roger Waters, played by Pink Floyd"? It pretty much speaks for itself. I'd rather listen to Amused To Death if I'm going down that road.

"Turkey In The Straw" coming from someplace in the clouds (Sparkle Motion), Tuesday, 27 August 2013 22:35 (twelve years ago)

I just never liked this record at all and I've listened to a lot of Pink Floyd.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 28 August 2013 01:36 (eleven years ago)

Just listened to parts of it, and it holds up pretty well, certainly better than the Floyd-branded stuff that came out after it. Already voted for "The Final Cut," but with I'd voted for "Your Possible Pasts."

Shart Week (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Wednesday, 28 August 2013 01:39 (eleven years ago)

ok i might not love this album but tend to agree with what Brad is saying. it has a bad reputation that is probably unwarranted.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 28 August 2013 01:51 (eleven years ago)

I like this album a lot. Voted for "The Final Cut," with a great vocal in that new voice Roger found around this time. "The Hero's Return" and "The Gunner's Dream" were runners-up.

"Not Now John" doesn't really work for me because the mix is so awkward--the guitars are buried and powerless when they should be "Nile Song" loud (well, at least "In the Flesh?" loud); you're mostly just hearing bass and drums thumping along.

Wall fans aren't necessarily going to find what they're looking for on The Final Cut unless their favorite songs are "Goodbye Blue Sky," "Nobody Home" and "Outside the Wall." There's not a whole lotta rock on Final Cut.

mookieproof, Wednesday, 28 August 2013 05:30 (eleven years ago)

This was the first Floyd album I ever heard and I've loved it ever since. So hellishly miserable and sombre. Waters' voice has this crazed bark to it which gives it this mad tension throughout. Voting "Two Suns in the Sunset".

Wright isn't on this at all. The quote above is referring to his (lack of) involvement on A Momentary Lapse of Reason.

It's like The Wall minus the tolerable bits.

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 28 August 2013 16:31 (eleven years ago)

Would be The Wall pt. 2, and just as good or better, if they added some songs that were more conventional and Gilmourish.

Its a good album just lacks those crowdpleasers.

I think Waters would take issue with your use of the word "they"

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 30 August 2013 02:43 (eleven years ago)

One of the biggest disconnects in history was reading the 5-star "the best Pink Floyd album ever" review in Rolling Stone that preceded the album's release - and then hearing the actual album.

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 30 August 2013 02:44 (eleven years ago)

Kurt Loder (in that review) called it "art rock's crowning masterpiece."

And I like the record, but jeez.
