Sick of cramming piles of shelves in my creepy basement, sick of having all this stuff down in my creepy basement where I never go - I need advice. Looking at somewhere around 6000-8000 CDs here. What do I do? Cheap/bulk buy suggestions obv desirable.

Plz feel free to get your lolling at my great investment decisions out of the way right off the bat. Also, no, I do not want digitize to be my only storage/backup solution. Hard copy 4eva.

One of the best solutions I've seen was an old library card catalog that had been repurposed into a CD storage unit. Looked very cool.

Not being snarky, have you considered thinning the herd first?

Bags Unlimited something like this - https://www.bagsunlimited.com/p-3317-cd-gatefold-sleeve-nbsp-40mil-polyethylene.aspx. You want something that you can keep the back tray card without bending it.
then some boxes, or even put all the envelopes on shelves with divider cards. Treat your CDs like your comic book collection.

First thought: make your basement less creepy.
Second, I think Target was selling the relatively classy-looking card catalog style CD storage units for sorta reasonable prices; with the oversized polyethylene sleeve ZT mention and those drawers you could probably shrink your collection down.

I know you said no to digitizing but you should reconsider. I've got several thousand cd's in the basement and I don't ever need to touch them again. Yes, keep your hard copies but nothing beats the convenience and flexibility of having my entire collection accessible, searchable, sortable and streamable. Seriously, just do it. Those cd binders are bullshit.

I've recommended these before, they are the only way to go:

i should clarify, i'm totally digitizing/digitized as well, i was just saying that i need to keep the hard copies for backup rather than just chuck them all out, hence the question abt storage xpost
