Holy shit, I think I accidentally voted for the Fall! So when the results come in, please count one more toward Neil Young and one less for the Fall.

how's life, Friday, 30 August 2013 16:06 (eleven years ago)

The fall. I like Neil a lot but the fall are just so inexhaustibly chewy.

Feel like this poll is the end of me and la lechera's friendship :(

i'll be your mraz (NickB), Friday, 30 August 2013 16:58 (eleven years ago)

haha, the lumbering dirgelike end!
neil obvs

no fomo (La Lechera), Friday, 30 August 2013 17:00 (eleven years ago)

They should tour together. I'd love to see Mark E. berate a hard core bandana wearing Neil crowd. Voted Neil only because there's not a "tie" choice.

Do you think
- Mark E Smith likes Neil?
- Neil would like The Fall if he heard them?

glumdalclitch, Saturday, 31 August 2013 17:30 (eleven years ago)

mark e smith hates neil young iirc

i'll be your mraz (NickB), Saturday, 31 August 2013 17:42 (eleven years ago)

here you go:

"the reason for creating the fall in the first place was to get away from fuckers like pink floyd and the eagles and neil young"

i'll be your mraz (NickB), Saturday, 31 August 2013 17:58 (eleven years ago)

kinda surprised he hates PF tbh, seems like he'd be a post-syd pre-darkside kinda guy

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Saturday, 31 August 2013 18:50 (eleven years ago)

MES more into Sabbath iirc

the hubert harumphreys of social media (Drugs A. Money), Saturday, 31 August 2013 18:51 (eleven years ago)

MES autobio "renegade" put me off the guy tbh. the bitterness was wearying and he has quite a conservative streak (yeah, to piss off middle-class liberals but a conservative streak nevertheless). i know hes not into self-confession but why write a book in the first place. i love his music esp. the early stuff but he seems to be dangerously becoming a caricature like john lydon. neil young seems to be more open-hearted although id buy a new fall album before a new neil young one tbh.

Old Boy In Network (Michael B), Saturday, 31 August 2013 20:00 (eleven years ago)

not sure that there's any real useful point of comparison here besides "both well-liked on this board," which makes for a pretty meaningless popularity contest imo, no offense but -- is there a meaningful contrast to be drawn out?

combination hair (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Saturday, 31 August 2013 20:02 (eleven years ago)

Neil Young always makes me think of Pink Floyd. Mark Smith has it exactly right.

clemenza, Saturday, 31 August 2013 20:12 (eleven years ago)

Useful point of comparison: who is the better interpreter of rockabilly classics?

i'll be your mraz (NickB), Saturday, 31 August 2013 20:18 (eleven years ago)

Wonderin v Container Drivers

Old Boy In Network (Michael B), Saturday, 31 August 2013 20:58 (eleven years ago)

didn't young go all reaganite for a while in the '80s? the main thing i remember about MES's conservative/nationalistic streak was his support for the falklands war.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Saturday, 31 August 2013 21:30 (eleven years ago)

My POV:

anything but Neil Young
The Fall over most things

Mark G, Saturday, 31 August 2013 21:32 (eleven years ago)

Love Neil to death, but The Mighty Fall.

Hadrian VIII, Saturday, 31 August 2013 21:38 (eleven years ago)

Ha MES in that interview^ on Irish bombing incompetence: "It could have been another 7-11 or what do you call it....9/11."

Hadrian VIII, Saturday, 31 August 2013 21:39 (eleven years ago)

Young and Smith both water signs

the hubert harumphreys of social media (Drugs A. Money), Saturday, 31 August 2013 22:00 (eleven years ago)

The Fall.

Dog Man Star took a suck on a pill... (Turrican), Saturday, 31 August 2013 22:15 (eleven years ago)

I might pick the Fall if we were doing this in the mid-80s

da croupier, Saturday, 31 August 2013 22:53 (eleven years ago)

not that I knew either in the mid-80s

da croupier, Saturday, 31 August 2013 22:53 (eleven years ago)

Neil will win this, but the difference between votes numbers will be smaller than:

Neil Young 69
Rolling Stones 40

nostormo, Saturday, 31 August 2013 22:56 (eleven years ago)

i think

nostormo, Saturday, 31 August 2013 22:56 (eleven years ago)

didn't young go all reaganite for a while in the '80s?

Actually he just made an offhand remark one time to a reporter who was goading "hippie Neil" to say something critical of Reagan, and the next thing you know he's branded a Reagan supporter. His anti-Reagan/Bush anthem Rockin' In The Free World was released in the 80s after all, I think that's probably a better indicator of where he stood.

agnosy, Saturday, 31 August 2013 23:06 (eleven years ago)

Re: point of comparison, both are committed to a certain kind of musical primitivism. Lyrically they're worlds apart tho

what's up ugly girls? (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 2 September 2013 01:51 (eleven years ago)

not to the same "certain kind" I don't think. neil is an outstanding guitarist by anybody's measure and can play a solo set. the mark e smith solo set would draw a crowd, but few would leave talking about how well he played.

combination hair (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Monday, 2 September 2013 02:14 (eleven years ago)

I feel like the Winnipeg vs Manchester discrepancy wd obscure any real affinities

the hubert harumphreys of social media (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 2 September 2013 05:14 (eleven years ago)

they both did great stuff but people who are hardcore fans of either are the worst

wk, Monday, 2 September 2013 07:30 (eleven years ago)

basically both are overrated by people who have a really '90s sensibility

wk, Monday, 2 September 2013 07:32 (eleven years ago)

The Fall are going to walk this. For one thing, Young's appeal in countries other than the US is, um, selective.

everything, Monday, 2 September 2013 08:39 (eleven years ago)

but most ilxors are from north america i think

nostormo, Monday, 2 September 2013 09:05 (eleven years ago)

The Fall are beyond music. They exist in the realm of gods and therefore a poll like this is irrelavant to the chances of them becoming 'croupiers' of this new century. With all good faith if Young gets this it will because he is old - not a fresh faced josher or wise acreage of space - as created by the seemingly plain Mark E Smith. He is the frond from which the fern is thrown - the wheat upon many barren fields.

Hinklepicker, Monday, 2 September 2013 10:05 (eleven years ago)

Ward Fowler, Monday, 2 September 2013 11:28 (eleven years ago)

Young's appeal in countries other than the US is, um, selective.

Not sure about this tbh, not like he's Jimmy Buffett or sumthin'

Tommy McTommy (Tom D.), Monday, 2 September 2013 11:56 (eleven years ago)

Appropriately enough MES has previously said that Neil Young was one of his biggest childhood heroes but it's this Neil Young:

Tommy McTommy (Tom D.), Monday, 2 September 2013 12:03 (eleven years ago)

I like Neil a lot, but honestly would vote for almost anyone versus The Fall.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 2 September 2013 16:54 (eleven years ago)

I agree they aren't the same kind of primitive. Their mutual commitment to the limits of their respective supporting units - even championing them as strengths - is the only common ground I can think of tho.

what's up ugly girls? (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 2 September 2013 16:55 (eleven years ago)

Lol at MES being committed to anything about his backing band. He'd prolley agree with the term 'supporting units' tho

the hubert harumphreys of social media (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 2 September 2013 20:19 (eleven years ago)

basically both are overrated by people who have a really '90s sensibility

Don't forget us '70s-sensibility people--we overrate Neil too.
