dirty three vs. the dead c

two "rock" acts, each with three members. both acts have a similar format (drums, guitar, etc.), where dirty three has warren ellis' signature electric violin, the dead c use a variety of crude/unusual techniques to get excess feedback, loops, and weird sounds. michael morley's vocals are arguably less integral to dead c's 'sound' than ellis' violin (to d3), but it's used to similar effect. it sounds as if morley layered multiple vocals on side b of their new album, as ellis has done on tracks like "I Offered It Up To The Stars & The Night Sky." sure, dirty three's songs sound more composed, but both acts are similarly raw.

Wow, ten years ago this would have been a no-brainer for me, but does it make me a bad person if I reveal the Dead C haven't been very interesting to me since Repent? Also, seeing them live was somewhat disillusioning, to say the least. Dirty Three, otoh, I pretty much ignored for years (except for Horse Stories, which was ubiquitous at the time at my college radio station, as well as a favorite of two consecutive girlfriends), but now I'm thinking I should better acquaint myself with their discography, because their particular brand of dustbowl drone is way more in my wheelhouse these days. So, voting Dirty Three, with all due respect to the great Dead C of Trapdoor, Clyma, Sonne, Eusa, et al.

Dirty Three's albums sound great.

I wish Dead C's albums sounded better.

mick turner's work (tren brothers, etc.) with jim white is real special.. started w/'ocean songs' and found it dull at first, but the looseness of their playing kept me interested. really dig turner's playing, especially with jim white. the art work is usually nice on the eyes. first impressions of the dead c were weak, recordings sounded like garbage. my copy of tusk had a crappy xerox cover glued over the the white house graphic/gatefold exterior, thought that was funny/cool. kinda baffled by Yeats' "propulsive," pulse style playing, when the rest of the noises/sounds suggest looser/freer zones, but i guess it works for their more song-ish stuff. digging armed courage, as the sounds are generally meatier and cleaner than a lot of their material. not sure why the dead c are so well revered/championed they are by some out there, but one of the few acts i'll blind purchase the new album from, and usually end up underwhelmed. dirty three seems to possess more dynamic sensitivity, something i'm not sure the dead c even put weight on. feels like D3 have solidified and refined to an end where the dead c are potentially more interesting as they continue recording.

Melbourne vs. Dunedin

"i remember a time when once you used to love me" is my favorite song by either. it's borderline rembetika

interesting comparison. I instinctively go for the Dead C just because I think they take more risks

Amazing. Glad I voted at the last minute and saved my favourite of these two acts from poll-losing ignominy.

I bet a collaboration between these bands, or various members of them, would be pretty interesting.

Surprised 42 posters voted in this...

I'll listen to the Dirty Three sometime (did so many years ago and they never left an impression), just didn't exist in my head till this thread.

Yeah, I couldn't decide - like both these bands a lot in a little goes a long way kind of way - so I didn't vote.

I voted dead c, was a simple choice.

I recently played Ocean Songs for the first time in a while, inspired by seeing Jim White drum for the Jem Cohen Cape Breton movie thing. I like the Tren Brothers record better, i guess i just like guitar more than violin. Never knowingly heard a Dead C record.

the mick turner album blue trees is a nice collection of his material, it features jim white on several tracks.
