I've been meaning to start one cause it's my favorite album of the year by far.

Yeah, so the thing that makes this album great is it's the sound of an exuberantly joyful character working through some hard shit, the production is colorful, and Chance brings a manic energy to whole thing, bouncing between off-the-wall raps and bluesy scat at will. Also "Pusha Man/Paranoia" is the best rap song this year. His first tape, 10 Day from a couple years back was good too, if not quite as fully formed.

Pusha Man/Paranoia, Acid Rap and Chain Smoker are my favorites. Hope Favorite Song will be a single. The whole thing is probably my hip-hop album this year.

The way he switches voices midsong is the source of his strength and weakness imo.

I need to revisit the tape, because when I think about it I feel more fond of it than I did when it was new and the quirks of his voice/delivery grated on me easily. And that new song with Lil Wayne is so good, I kinda hope that becomes his big single.

Still cant knock the K'naan comparisons out of my head BUT I still really like him and this tape.

Still listen to this regularly, and still marvel at how incredible it is. Can't list many recent rap albums that match this level of song craft while sustaining this level of energy while featuring rapping this consistently strong. Incredible.

"Chain Smoker" is just glorious, but my favorite is still "Lost." The way he romanticizes an empty hookup, looking for meaning that's not there, is just so sad and pure. You rarely find that level of affection in rap songs about actual romance, let alone flings

There is no duds on this album.

One of the tensions that makes this album work so is how it's got all these middle-class rap signifiers on the surface but also has all this heavy fucked up street shit lurking just off-camera and sometimes intruding.

I like this and I'm glad it exists but there's something about his voice, or one of the voices he using, that I find really unpleasant to listen to.

I barely even noticed the Childish Gambino verse on first listen, the Ab-Soul verse is the really egregious one here.

I feel like a big part of rap fandom, especially these days, is kinda figuring out what unique or strange voices/rapping styles you actually want to get used to and not be annoyed or put off by. Like it took me a while to come around to Kendrick's voice, still slowly getting used to Chance's.

Ugh that Ab Soul verse though.

Yeah, his voice does grate a bit. I have to admit...

It did for me when I'd only heard "Juice" and that's prob why it took me a couple months to check it out until I saw so many people I trust talk about how good it was. But as soon as I put it on it was immediately taken with it. Total Albums that you know are going to be brilliant within the opening 20 seconds of the first track status.

also agree with matt but i think ultimately i could probably power through the sound of his voice if i felt more compelled by what he was saying with it. just don't really feel like i need early yeezy told to me again by wyclef on ludes

i don't know about gaslighting but this def feels like he went from overrated to underrated

Coloring Book was my favorite album of 2016, but I never really liked Acid Rap either. I guess he is very hit and miss for me, lol.

Acid Rap and 10 Day were both better than Coloring book imo. Still haven't listened to this one yet though.

this album is great and i love listening to it. “five year plan” is AMAZING

i'm pretty sure "get a bag" is better than "sunday candy"

ok this is really growing on me now, the production's so gorgeous and there are plenty of hooks they're just a different vibe to the sort of bigness of a lot of colouring book so that + the length made it hard to really get into at first

I do want to apologize to Fred who complained that this album wasn’t corny enough which suggests tho we have v different aesthetic criteria he did listen to this album more than 99% of reviewers — this is def his least corny album at least possibly barring the dark parts of acid rap

I haven't read the reviews but I was pleased that Chance has toned things down a bit? I remember enjoying Coloring Book but also finding it exhausting and I didn't return to it after a few run-throughs.

Also the dark parts of Acid Rap are probably my favourite things he's done.

most of the complaints i've seen have been "this is waaay too corny why does he love his wife so much lol" and i don't get that at all when colouring book went full on "god is great!" for a few tracks and this one is generally chiller and a little more low-key musically too

only a few tracks in and his verses are really good but the choruses are mostly deflating

idgi the hook on "all day long" is tight and gibbard really works on "do you remember"

this is a very me thing to post but the gibbard hook is like something green gartside would sing

I’m finally listening to this album now, and... I don’t really understand why so many people are so mad at it? Sure, there are moments that are a bit off, like the white dude screaming on the title track. But for the most part it sounds pretty good.

It reminds me of Three feet high and rising in a way that very few modern rap albums do, lol.

One of the funniest ways in which chance ended up at this point, where some of his best material is treated as the worst shit in the world, is that there’s no singular cause... instead it’s like a laundry list of little things, down to him putting cocorosie on his album, a self own so specific that explaining it to someone off ilx requires linking to fifteen year old articles about long forgotten hipster parties ... it really has been career death by a thousand paper cuts

cocorosie only show up for a few seconds too lol

had never thought about comparing gibbard to gartside but their voices do have a similar weird quality to them and i can hear what brad means

it also might explain a reason why i don't really connect with either singer

still, a great album

if it has a weak point to me its that he's pulled back somewhat from certain kinds of vulnerable specifics, which i understand on a level of what fame does to a person, but its unfortunate it happened on an album that is so defined by personal relationships ... nonetheless, great songs

the stuff that doesn't really work for me on this is down to "hot shower" (which is fun and goofy i guess but his voice is really grating on it), the part on the title track where francis yells a bunch, and "5 year plan" (which isn't really bad just relatively dull and saccharine?)

in addition to all the wife complaints i keep seeing people complain about the production being bland and lifeless which is even more baffling, i really don't know what people are listening to.

twitter really hates this guy now huh. he's on that wave where no matter what he does someone retweets with a 'look at this dork' and everyone piles on the hate

drake toosie slide has had the “salmon gucci slides” song from this album stuck in my head and it still cracks me up that chance and nicki got together for the first time as a voltron of once beloved celebs who suddenly became twitter villains
