definitely not the neuest one.

oh boy.

james franco, Monday, 9 September 2013 00:25 (eleven years ago)

aren't 4/'72/'86 all the same or something?

wooden treeshjips (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 9 September 2013 00:29 (eleven years ago)

It's got to be the debut for me, both 2 and '75 have high quality side 1s, but the 2nd halves I just end up skipping.

That said, if they had released the first sides of 2 and '75 as one record, that might be better than the debut but now we're wandering off into pointless fantasy conjecture.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Monday, 9 September 2013 00:34 (eleven years ago)

4 was unfinished and was released in an attempt to beat the boots. It was revised and reissued in 2010 as '86. There are differences.
'72 is some bad n' weird rehearsal recording.

chromecassettes, Monday, 9 September 2013 00:35 (eleven years ago)

nah - 2 for me all the way

nonightsweats, Monday, 9 September 2013 04:05 (eleven years ago)

I feel like 2 has the best track ("Fur Immer") but '75 has the least amount of bad songs

wooden treeshjips (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 9 September 2013 04:08 (eleven years ago)

I like '75 most of all, after two-and-a-half albums of instrumental music, to hear Dinger start screaming on "Hero", just the best. I mean vox are not what make Neu! good but it makes for a brilliant climax imo

Never heard '72 but I like 4 and/or '86 a lot

Tommy McTommy (Tom D.), Monday, 9 September 2013 08:10 (eleven years ago)

I had Neu 86 in the car, the family found it and put it on, and liked it immensely.

Mark G, Monday, 9 September 2013 09:33 (eleven years ago)

I had a Neu! search kick last year, and I have the two UA singles.

Mark G, Monday, 9 September 2013 09:34 (eleven years ago)

Two? My sister bought "Super/Neuschnee" single when it came out, so I grew up with it!

Tommy McTommy (Tom D.), Monday, 9 September 2013 09:35 (eleven years ago)

(It was a bit like "The Faust Tapes", in that it was originally sold at a reduced price, so there used to be a lot secondhand copies around, certainly in Glasgow)

Tommy McTommy (Tom D.), Monday, 9 September 2013 09:38 (eleven years ago)

(Never thought about it before but 14-year old schoolgirls had appear to have had different tastes in 1973)

Also, Connie Plank

Mark G, Monday, 9 September 2013 13:36 (eleven years ago)

it's got to be the debut. weissensee is my all-time fave and the other tracks are almost as strong.

it's the distortion, stupid! (alex in mainhattan), Monday, 9 September 2013 15:23 (eleven years ago)

i think 75 is going to take this. has this really not been polled before? wow

frogbs, Monday, 9 September 2013 15:29 (eleven years ago)

The debut.

Dog Man Star took a suck on a pill... (Turrican), Monday, 9 September 2013 16:05 (eleven years ago)

neu were as good as 'rock' or whatever ever got

theres scarcely much reason to rank the main lps when there are only three and each of them is necessary to understand what they were trying to do, its not like sonic youth or the beatles &c

75 is the lp ive probably played the most

2 ℜ 4 u (Nilmar Honorato da Silva), Monday, 9 September 2013 16:22 (eleven years ago)

Their debut, hands down. Mostly because it is the one that doesn't sound as dated. There are parts from their third album which I cannot listen to anymore. Their second is very good, as well, but I felt their more ambient passages weren't to my liking. I prefer other ambient pieces of and around that time.

c21m50nh3x460n, Monday, 9 September 2013 16:42 (eleven years ago)

I still listen to the first one a lot

I like where they went with La Dusseldorf and Harmonia/Rother-solo more than '75, but when I see that unhinged clip of WDR footage of them playing 'Hero' live, I can't help but hope the whole concert is in the can somewhere waiting to come out

Milton Parker, Monday, 9 September 2013 17:54 (eleven years ago)

75/La-D/Deluxe is an amazing pseudo-trilogy. Never got much into Rother solo outside of the first album, what's good?

frogbs, Monday, 9 September 2013 18:00 (eleven years ago)

the first four are produced by Conny with Jaki Liebezeit on drums, and I like them all (though it took a few spins). then he replaces the guitars & drums with Fairlight presets and things immediately become terrifying

Debut is astonishing. Need to hear other 2 properly before voting. Weissensee was pretty much my inner soundtrack this summer

chromecassettes, Friday, 13 September 2013 11:24 (eleven years ago)

Second half of 2 is vastly underrated and anticipates Super Roots 6 among other things.

And Fur Immer is p much the best thing ever, so that.

the hubert harumphreys of social media (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 13 September 2013 12:02 (eleven years ago)

Wow, never heard that Michael Rother "Katzenmusik" track before. I really dig it.

grandavis, Friday, 13 September 2013 14:19 (eleven years ago)

I may be a "Weissensee" guy myself, some of my favorite guitar playing ever on that song.

grandavis, Friday, 13 September 2013 14:20 (eleven years ago)

Solo Rother is beyond urgent. I would say start with Flammende Herzen.

i believe we can c.h.u.d. all night (Jon Lewis), Friday, 13 September 2013 14:41 (eleven years ago)

hm, kinda torn between the first two. i tend to listen the first one more often, tho.

rusty_allen, Friday, 13 September 2013 16:32 (eleven years ago)

75 for me. It's the one that works best as a complete album. I don't need much off the first two after Hallogallo/Fur Immer.

Position Position, Friday, 13 September 2013 18:27 (eleven years ago)

75

dan selzer, Friday, 13 September 2013 21:59 (eleven years ago)

Another 75 backer

Clarke B., Saturday, 14 September 2013 00:10 (eleven years ago)

iirc "Negativland" got lots of upvotes on a Neu! poll/discussion and it made me re-evaluate the non-Hallogallo tracks on that record. Great record! Everything is great about these records. Jeez

flamboyant goon tie included, Saturday, 14 September 2013 00:22 (eleven years ago)

It took me so long to get my head around the non-Hallogallo tracks when I first heard that record years back, but when they clicked they reaaally clicked. I still pull out 75 the most and think it's the most satisfying listen, but I wish they'd done more stuff like Negativland for sure.

Clarke B., Saturday, 14 September 2013 05:52 (eleven years ago)

the ambient tracks on 1 are by far the most satisfying ambient tracks neu did imo.

i'm voting for one. i've still never heard anything like that album. it is soo weird and beautiful. there was a time i would vote for 75, i would still vote for it if i was posting on the road with it blasting out of my 97 kia sephia speakers somewhere in nevada 10 years ago.

I'd love this to be true as it is my actual ranking for them.

Moka, Saturday, 14 September 2013 07:59 (eleven years ago)

Talk of "Hero" means an obligatory post of this clip. Surely WDR has more footage of this show?

chronological order call is insane. 75 will beat 2 by about 20 votes

voted neu! after giving 75 and fur immer listens. it's subtler, more psychedelic, more refined and more synaesthetically redolent of summer and its hopes, IMO

... Jenks kakling Neu! military£ ... snkkt! pickles Özil JTCF njhtdgs (imago), Saturday, 21 September 2013 06:59 (eleven years ago)

Based on the RYM scores the actual ranking would be:

Neu 75 > Neu! > Neu! 2 > 4 > 86 > 72 Live

Moka, Saturday, 21 September 2013 07:59 (eleven years ago)

first is by far the best album here.

god it would be fun to do a poll in the chronological stylee of shakey's vu solo member poll with selected krautrock artists, i'm thinking kraftwerk, neu, can, ash ra at a minimum

If it's 70-75:

Faust IV
Kraftwerk - Autobahn
Amon Duul - Yeti
Cluster - Zuckerzeit
Harmonia - Deluxe
Ash Ra Tempel
Gottsching - Inventions for electric guitar
Embryo - Steig Aus
Popol Vuh - In Der Garten
Neu!
Can's Tago and Ege
Gila
Wegmullet - Tarot
Twenty Sixty Six and Then - Reflections on the Future

Are eligible. This being ILM Can would have an unfair advantage.

Moka, Saturday, 21 September 2013 08:36 (eleven years ago)

yeah! limit by years is a good idea.

No, I think it's more the fact that they were really really good

Tommy McTommy (Tom D.), Saturday, 21 September 2013 09:07 (eleven years ago)

Anyway, not sure what to vote here. '75 is the most consistent but 2 contains probably my three favourite Neu tracks... but not much else... also it was the first one I heard/saw. I suppose it'll have to be 2.

interesting results. This thread had a bit of a funny turn though didn't it.

Neil S, Monday, 23 September 2013 09:41 (eleven years ago)

It started off being quite straightforward, then had an argument with itself and reversed up and slowed down, then went past in a flash, and finished reasonably together again.

Yes, this thread/poll was Neu2.
