This is the name of a Czech black metal band that was recommended to me today. What comes to mind when I see band names like this is the difficulty of communicating information about the band, via print media as well as online searching, and whether or not that's the intention.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/%E2%96%88%E2%96%88%E2%96%88%E2%96%88%E2%96%88%E2%96%88/3540358943
The band has no name; only a solid bar used instead. On sites limited to ASCII input, the band have also gone by "nic" (Czech for "nothing/null/none"). For sanity's sake, this band may be referenced on Metallum by searching for "Black Strip".

Well, they aren't getting added to our database at work. I've already made that executive decision.

obviously it helps if you're Prince and then everybody has a sensible name they can use instead of your new squiggle

i guess bands that do this mostly aren't looking to be household names so the question really is how much impact does difficulty in googling/referencing have on niche careers? i'm guessing it doesn't hurt too much if your audience is pretty hardcore?

i have a sneaking admiration for artists that give themselves nigh-ungoogleable names in this day and age tbh

I'm kind of a sucker for stuff like this tbh, it's right up my alley. That's another thing, with a name like this, people are always going to talk about your name. That can be a benefit, but it can also be a drawback.

"i have a sneaking admiration for artists that give themselves nigh-ungoogleable names in this day and age tbh"

i always suspect it might be a gimmick in order to get attention that the band wouldn't get by the music itself.

(unless it's an ungooglebale names like The Men or Women etc..)

JF has already confirmed they'll stay out of at least one corporate database, seems like a win

i am no fan of metal but the music to me seems quite "interesting". the textural guitar sound is like a densely knit carpet. they also make me think a little of a godspeed ybe who just hold their crescendo forever instead of building up slowly. the shouting though is absolutely horrible. it sounds as if the singer is butchered.

it's the distortion, stupid! (alex in mainhattan), Thursday, 12 September 2013 20:48 (twelve years ago)
