and folkways and ian's favorite folk-legacy label. got in like 1200 records from a radio station. mostly 80's stuff. flying fish was doing some seriously productive drugs in the 80's because they must have put out a thousand records back then. 80% is stuff i don't want to listen to.
meanwhile, where is the love for Dan Ar Bras? i love his Acoustic album on green linnet. and his album Music For The Silences To Come...on shanachie.
also, every time i get that archie fisher album in on folk-legacy i love playing it but i never keep it for some reason. i should keep the copy i played today. such a great album.
and everyone needs that mick hanly album A Kiss In The Morning Early on Green Linnet. though i think it might have been on Mulligan in the u.k.
oh and i dug the savoy-doucet cajun band record on arhoolie today. mostly cuz i like ann savoy. not so much for the doucet part.
i think i must have put out at least 500 $2 records yesterday and today. mostly flying fish related.

Damn, I wish I lived near your store. I love a lot of that stuff. I don't think 80s folk is unlistenable at all -- it just depends what you're listening to. Those labels have put out some amazing music. Musicians like Bill Staines and Norman Blake are among my favorites. Any Ed Trickett, Jim Ringer, Mary McCaslin? Red Clay Ramblers? Utah Phillips?
― banjoboy, Monday, 16 September 2013 23:39 (twelve years ago)
topic and rounder are important record labels. let's get that straight right off the bat. the other...less so, but they did all put out great stuff and the shanachie empire certainly responsible for turning a lot of people on to a WHOLE world of music. but Front Hall is still kind of a lame label. green linnet also very important in licensing music that never ever would have been put out here by anyone else which is completely insane when you consider how strong and essential a lot of the stuff they put out was. there is this though:
"In 2002, Green Linnet was sued for unpaid royalties by bands Cherish the Ladies and Altan and artists Mick Moloney, Joanie Madden and Eileen Ivers.[2] Most artists were paid and most claims were settled in 2006. There remain, however, a number of outstanding claims that have yet to be resolved, clouding the legacy left behind by Green Linnet and its then-owner Wendy Newton. Bands have been known to leave the label because of poor management from the label, including Wolfstone and Lúnasa."

It would appear that the ownership and management of Green Linnet havefelt secure in mistreating their artists because historically folk andtraditional musicians have not possessed the resources to take legalaction against major corporations. What Green Linnet clearly did notanticipate is that so many distinguished artists would come together totake collective action against them.
The distinguished Irish musician and teacher Mick Moloney summed it upby saying, "In recent years the management of Green Linnet has come upwith a typical rejoinder when confronted by artists demanding justice.‘Sue us,’ they say. Well, it’s finally happened."

i'm a fan of early 80's new age/world/jazz/folk fusion. later in the 80's the production was hell and i can't hang. you can find good early 80's stuff on jazz and folk AND new age labels. you know, tabla and mandolin and gongs and sax. i liked that early tri atma stuff in the 80's. and i liked do'a. inner city records, the jazz label, put out a bunch of stuff like that in the late 70's/early 80's. weird hybrids.
― scott seward, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 01:29 (twelve years ago)
man... i wish i lived closer to your store.i love all this shit.norman blake is my boy. mary mccaslin, rosalie sorrels... dick gaughan. rounder put out so many awesome records, no doubt about it. super important.the shanachia offshoot MORNING STAR put out three EXCELLENT compilations of kentucky fiddle music orig issued on Gennett. they also put out some killer cajun stuff, and a wonderful comp of early western/cowboy music. not to mention all that cape breton fiddle stuff i love -- angus chisolm, bill lamey, and the irish blokes like paddy killoran and michael coleman.
utah phillips? rules.jim ringer? rules.

i like the solar plexus albums on inner city. there are all kinds of variations though. african/new age/folk hybrids. south american/new age/folk hybrids. you know, it was a thing. folk and jazz people were up for anything.
― scott seward, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 02:28 (twelve years ago)
I have a Tri Atma record, but I always thought of them as being more fusion/cosmic, like Wally Badarou, Tullio De Piscopo, or even Unknown Cases. I mean don't they bring a little 'World sound' into their music?
― JacobSanders, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 02:53 (twelve years ago)
Not that the world/african/south american sounds are off putting.
― JacobSanders, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 02:56 (twelve years ago)
yah, total world thing. but that's the stuff i like. the world melts onto the folk onto the jazz or whatever. doesn't even have to include jazz but i like when it does. just seems like the 70's and very early 80's stuff was better at it before things got kinda cheesy. more organic.

I bought this 1986 record on Flying Fish when it was new after being floored by their gig at the Birchmere in DC. Originally a homemade cassette sold at their shows, it predates any of their "real" albums - and is excellent. It's since been sold on bigger labels with different cover art.

Scott OTM eleven years ago. The album being "The Man With a Rhyme" by Archie Fisher. It's a fantastic album.
I love Archie Fisher anyway, love his voice, his guitar playing and his own songwriting. I avoided listening to him for years because he's kind of an institution in Scotland and I thought he'd be a bit corny, like the Corries, but the Corries aren't corny and neither is Archie Fisher.
Amusingly the fag, sorry cigarette, Archie has dangling from his gob on the front cover appears to have been airbrushed out in later pressings of this album.
