Moka's 50 Favorite Albums of the 90's - Pick the Best One.

It was too damn hard narrowing this one down to 50. I had to remove albums from Sonny Sharrock, The Stooges, Tom Rush, Wayne Shorter, Beau Brummels, Beatles, Cecil Taylor, Horace Silver, Coltrane, Stockhausen, Gene Clark, Terry Riley, Albert Ayler, Sam Cooke, Komeda, Zappa, Donovan, Red Krayola among others. The list has some consensus classics to pick from as well as some personal underrated favorites that I'd be glad to talk about. Dylan and Beatles fans wont be pleased but Cromagnon and Tiny Tim needed the space.

Oops, title should read of the 60's not 90's. Can a mod please change it?

Moka, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 19:52 (twelve years ago)

Kinda want to vote for Jackson C. Frank because no one else will.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 19:53 (twelve years ago)

Pet sounds and odessey and oracle are my #1 and #2 albums of all time. So I guess the beach boys, as boring / clichéd a choice as it is

monotony, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 20:37 (twelve years ago)

For a moment there I was thinking about removing those two albums and have Sonny Sharrock's Black Woman and The Stooges' self titled instead so the results seemed less concentrated towards those them but they're undeniable classics. Sometimes clichéd choices are the best choices.

Moka, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 20:41 (twelve years ago)

Haha I thought this was some kinda poll-parody until I read the "60s, not 90s" disclaimer

"lol meth dear john" call (Myonga Vön Bontee), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 21:45 (twelve years ago)

No! This is a serious poll! I'm hoping a mod sees it before the title ruins the poll's participation.

Moka, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 22:02 (twelve years ago)

I'm leaning towards the Poppy Family

"lol meth dear john" call (Myonga Vön Bontee), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 22:20 (twelve years ago)

five leaves left in front of waltz for debbie. do you really listen to machine gun, moka? not really an album to love and listen, more an album to worship and leave in the drawer, i'd say.

it's the distortion, stupid! (alex in mainhattan), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 22:22 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, this is In a Silent Way. My second favorite sixties album is Frevo Rasgado by Gilberto Gil.

Frederik B, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 22:23 (twelve years ago)

I love Brazillian music from the 60s and 70s but somehow I still can't digest Gilberto Gil. Huge respect to his compositions but I just cant get into them.

Alex: It's definitely not the kind of album that I pick casually. It's more of a once in a lifetime thing that you must experience.

Moka, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 22:41 (twelve years ago)

Can't choose between Mingus, Moby Grape, Miles, and Scott 4.

Machine Gun hasn't aged well for me, though.

ELECTRIC BATH

Me & Mahomies (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Wednesday, 18 September 2013 04:40 (twelve years ago)

My god I need a Mod to help me out please. My OCD is tickling madly because the thread reads 90's, it confuses me with the other thread.

Moka, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 05:16 (twelve years ago)

many, many great choices here. i suppose the absolute standouts are Zombies, King Crimson, and Mingus.

charlie h, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 05:16 (twelve years ago)

Black Saint and te Sinner Lady.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 05:26 (twelve years ago)

Yeah maybe that one but I was excited to see Electric Bath.

Me & Mahomies (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Wednesday, 18 September 2013 05:27 (twelve years ago)

Electric Bath is really something. It manages to sound effortless and natural when in reality they were experimenting with the studio and eastern influences. The first time I read about this album I thought it was going to sound goofy... big band from the 60's with an interest in prog-rock and tape loops? I was pleasantly surprised they never allow themselves to get gimmicky.

Moka, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 06:09 (twelve years ago)

I love a lot of his work but that album is a masterpiece.

Me & Mahomies (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Wednesday, 18 September 2013 06:18 (twelve years ago)

He always flirted with gimmicky but seemed to fall on the right side of the line way more often than not.

Me & Mahomies (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Wednesday, 18 September 2013 06:19 (twelve years ago)

Oops

velko, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 06:46 (twelve years ago)

Ok apparently mods cannot change poll title's... :/

Change title from one thread?

So I guess we'll have two 90's poll then heh.

Moka, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 08:16 (twelve years ago)

Odessey & Oracle, just over In a Silent Way.

That Yusef Lateef album was one of the big discoveries for me from the jazz LP poll, it's an excellent record.

Gavin, Leeds, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 08:47 (twelve years ago)

If it was best albums of the '60s I'd have gone for Capt. Beefheart, but since it's best of the '90s, it should probably go to Os Mutantes.

o. nate, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 19:40 (twelve years ago)

Scott 4 and Pet Sounds are my two favourite albums from the 60's. I'll probably go for The Beach Boys which was my favourite album of all time for a long while.

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 19:52 (twelve years ago)

White Noise for me, fairly obviously. I'd kind of like to give a tip of the hat to Cromagnon, as it's a great piece of work and one of the most 'out of its time' records ever made, but it's just not as good a record.

emil.y, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 20:02 (twelve years ago)

Cromagnon blows my mind. It doesn't hold up that well as a record but Caledonia alone is worth the admission. White Nouse is far ahead of its time.

Moka, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 20:11 (twelve years ago)

torn between take a picture and patty waters sings. the 1st terry callier record is lovely but i don't listen to it that often. cromagnon, idk. sounds like one of those novelty records where the shock value quickly dilutes after a couple spins.

cock chirea, Thursday, 19 September 2013 01:25 (twelve years ago)

Please vote margo!

Moka, Thursday, 19 September 2013 08:14 (twelve years ago)

I mean I love all those records but from those three Margo is the one I'd rep for.

Moka, Thursday, 19 September 2013 08:16 (twelve years ago)

Cromagnon and Brotzmann are the two records in here that I love in context. I don't listen to them but I love them because they paved the road for records that I love and listen to in a frequent basis. Maybe I give them more credit than they deserve but in my ideal world they changed the rules fir the next decade.

Moka, Thursday, 19 September 2013 08:22 (twelve years ago)

Loads of greats here, but voted for Tiny Tim cos I like that one and want it to do well.

Pingu Unchained (dog latin), Thursday, 19 September 2013 08:46 (twelve years ago)

In A Silent Way. But I was looking forward to voting for Oasis.

Kinda want to vote for Jackson C. Frank because no one else will.

Kinda want to vote for Terry Callier for the same reason, and might actually do it if this were a '70s poll as he has several great slept-on albums from that decade.

I lean toward the folky stuff - Bert Jansch, Davy Graham, Nick Drake, Fred Neil, and (yes) Jackson C. Frank. But who am I kidding? Pet Sounds is the best album here, edging out In A Silent Way.

Is it like voting for 60's album that sounds like a 90's one?

― nostormo

No, sorry, stupid mistake... I asked for mods to change it to 60's but apparently poll titles cannot be modified.

Moka, Sunday, 10 November 2013 22:07 (twelve years ago)

RFI cause I've never heard of them:

Chavela Vargas - Con El Cuarteto Lara Foster (1961)
Jackson C. Frank - Jackson C. Frank (1965)
Ruthann Friedman - Constant Companion (1969)
The Smoke - The Smoke (1968)
The Poppy Family - Which Way You Goin' Billy? (1969)

― famous for hits! (seandalai)

Chavela Vargas is one of the most popular 'ranchera' music performers and this record includes three of her most famous songs (paloma negra, la llorona, un mundo raro) You can find this one on spotify I think. The songs are very dependent on the lyrics so knowing Spanish might be necessary to appreciate them. She often sounds like she is singing drunk and out of tone which adds to represent the pain and sadness in most of the lyrics. I am actually interested to know if the feelings are transmitted clearly even for someone who doesn't understand the language.

Jackson C. Frank is a sad folk record. Nothing groundbreaking but it is a very enjoyable album if you're in a gloomy mood. I rarely touch it because it puts me in a very depressive mood.

Ruthann Friedman is another good melancholic folk album. Sounds like Joan Baez covering Nick Drake.

The Smoke is a psychedelic baroque pop gem! I absolutely love this one. Just take a quick peek and listen to Odyssey or Umbrella. There have been times when I'm listening to this record that I begin to think it might be better than pet sounds or odessey and oracle. It's obviously not but I still wish this one was more well known amongst the fans of the other two records.

Poppy Family is bubblegum psychedelic pop with sitars and ocassional dark, sinister elements thrown for good measure. I once recommended them to a friend by describing them as the Carpenters if they were Satanic.

"Jackson C. Frank - Jackson C. Frank (1965)"

thanks for that, moka

nostormo, Sunday, 10 November 2013 23:29 (twelve years ago)

The Bert Jansch and Jackson C. Frank albums contain my two favourite songs on this list, but from start to finish, Moby Grape.
