So, what is the source of that string sample? (Talking about MRI's micro[notmicro] house anthem on All That Glitters.). Andy K. thought the theme from CHiPs, I thought the theme from Hart to Hart, I've read at least one other.

Not answering the question, but has anyone heard much Yoko Mono stuff - pretty much proposing an entire new prog-disco sub-genre out of "Tied To The 80s". Search: "Higher Than Phunk".

No idea about the sample either, but yeah Tim, I downloaded the Yoko Mono track (I'm going to call my band Yoko Oh-Yeah) due to your Skykicking rec, and the build-up groove is indeed very tight. I think that the little tacked-on vocal samples are amusing though, as it seems the producers might even be afraid of full on disco-mania (although "Tied to the 80s isn't afraid of anything). I'm just waiting until there's a full on glitched out "Let No Man Put Asunder" cover (or maybe I'll just do it myself!). Micro-Garaaaage is the future!, Kompakt and Naked will merge etc.

Whoa, I'm listening to that song right now. I was trying to sort this same thing out the other night -- it certainly sounds like 70s TV theme stuff.

Ha ha Spencer have you heard the Digital Disco comp. yet? That is *exactly* what it is.

and it is good, etc.

Oh really?! and where is it from/what label? I'm wondering if the whole micro-house thing, which is so much discussed here, is actually informing house music proper (whatever that is)? e.g. is Roger Sanchez or Louis Vega or Miguel Migs putting extra time into hi-hats, glitching vocals etc?

Digital Disco is the new Force Tracks comp with tracks from MRI, Luomo, Metro Area, Hakan Lidbo (as Data80), Dub Taylor, Swayzak, M. Schaffhauser, a Herbert remix of Akufen etc. Very different to Hypercity, it's heavy on vocals and allusions to pop and (duh) disco, with hefty doses of synths and vocoders. Which means it's pretty broadminded as well - I'd say the three most obvious reference points for it would be Loft-style disco, Daft Punk's Discovery and microhouse-proepr.

Oddest (potential) response to microhouse: the "Mixzo Club Mix" of Aaliyah's "Rock The Boat", which sounds like Luomo's '02 singles (with maybe a touch of Decomped Subsonic?) but came out last year - this from a guy who as far as I can tell tends to make miami bounce and Thunderpussy-like club mixes of pop songs. Check the amazing vocal breakdown towards the end.

so That's who Data 80 is! I finally procured Digital Disco and am listening at the moment. I love the lushness of everything combined with the tension of the "micro" intricacies, although it makes me wonder whether all 120-130bpm dance music producers will always/already feel the inexorable pull of classic House (while infusing it with new textures, techniques and approaches). Also Jess, didn't you say you didn't like deep-house on another thread? It doesn't take much of a shoe-horn to work Kompakt and Force-Tracks cuts into your standard deep house set. Is this just my terminological disconnect? Maybe you mean something else by "deep-house".

As for the Aaliyah track, I do read Skykicking so I've had it for a while now. I'm very curious as to what tradition "Mixzo" is coming from too. DJ-style or maybe it's a software thing (or maybe he reads this board too!)? In any case I love how the vocal cut-ups add up to this melodic Aaliyah chorus coming at you from all directions. By contrast, I like it much better than most of the Akufen album ("Skidoos" is v. good) which is just too all over the place and a step backward from his "Little Hop of Horror" track on the Click-Hop comp. I was hoping for a glitchy and more varied Todd Edwards, but ended up with the kitchen sink.

did i? that seems a bit out of character, but then i again i do say a lot of things on ilm that i take back a day (or an hour) later. (i've been listening to almost nothing but house these days - from disco cutups to trancier stuff to microwhatevah to handbag to tribal etc etc - trying to pinpoint exactly when that beat got so into my system.)
