the Misfits: Clazzik or Dudd

I went back and looked, but surprisingly no one has asked this one before..(or if they did I didn't find it).

So what say you? I recently dug out my copy of STATIC AGE (archival recordings from a little prior to their campier/creepier era) and was blown away by how great tracks like "Attitude," "Spinal Remains," "She" and "Bullet" stand up today. He may be an easy target of ridicule, but little Glen's voice really does pack a lot of style and personality into the bludgeoning assualt. And how can anyone knock tracks like "She", "Angelfuck" and the sublime "Die, Die My Darling"!?!?!

I sporadically enjoyed some of Samhain's stuff, and the earlier Danzig discs, but have never heard nor cared about the re-formed Glen-less Misfits. What was the source of the falling out to begin with, anyone know?

In any event....speak up now: MISFITS:CLASSIC OR DUD?

i ain't no goddam son of a bitch!

unknown or illegal user (doorag), Friday, 11 October 2002 03:25 (twenty-three years ago)

"Attitude" is a good track, and "We Are 138" is cute, but post Danzig stuff is pointless to me--I mean listen to the vocals on those aformentioned tracks--that guy sounds like he desperately wants to give himself a hernia! What can beat that?

Ashley Andel, Friday, 11 October 2002 04:12 (twenty-three years ago)

classic as hell.

they'd clearly be nothing but illiterate thugs without stormer, though.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 11 October 2002 04:38 (twenty-three years ago)

oh THOSE misfits.

i can't imagine anyone not considering them classic. especially with that hair.

the non-danzigs seem to tour through here a lot but i've never deigned to see/hear them. without the voice it'd be a bit bad - like post-ozzy sabbath, right? not that i've heard that either...

brian badword (badwords), Friday, 11 October 2002 04:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah, post-Ozzy Sabbath ain't that bad (seek ye "Mob Rules"). It's the post-DIO Sabbath that you need to avoid.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 11 October 2002 05:09 (twenty-three years ago)

classic. it's only a pity they sold more t-shirts than records (in australia, at any rate). i agree with you, alex. 'die die my darling' still holds up remarkably well after all this time.

angelo (angelo), Friday, 11 October 2002 05:36 (twenty-three years ago)

they were classic but have dug themselves into the dud zone

chaki (chaki), Friday, 11 October 2002 07:31 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah they're alright as a trashy pop group, but surely just a Cramps-bugger-Ramones-with-bizzare-hair-gene clone?

a different Sean, Friday, 11 October 2002 09:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Classic early songs, search all. Their later stuff leaves me sorta cold, but it's not like they're not trying; more like they're just getting old and can't help it. Funny that Dez and Robo are in the group right now, too.

I remember how excited I got when I read in MAX R&R about the bassist busting someone's head open with his bass during a gig. I was thinking EVERYONE should get to do that because punk audiences are always full of assholes at the front of the stage. I'm not sure I've changed, but I don't know if I'd technically get EXCITED by that any more, though.

matt riedl (veal), Friday, 11 October 2002 11:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Fucking Classic Dude, (we are talking about the Misfits with Danzig right? Not the Jerry Only meathead version) every record is great with the exception of Evillive, which just sounds like shite! Legacy Of Brutality is an all time fave...I have many fond memories of drinking Meister Brau beer in the woods with a boombox and Walk Among Us blasting, oh to be young! I still put them in my top ten and since it's getting close to halloween, they are in heavy rotation!

Also that link to the other Misfits site from brian badword is CLASSIC...Gem Rocks way harder though!

"Hybrid Moments"

That says it all, doesn't it?

Yancey (ystrickler), Friday, 11 October 2002 14:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah. What y'all said. Classic as can be, at least during the Glen-led incarnation.

wl (wl), Friday, 11 October 2002 15:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Classic for sure, though all you really need is Static Age for a collection of their best stuff in one place. Walk Among Us was good too, but nobody seems to pay that record much attention. The post-reunion stuff is laughable, for the most part. Some of the tunes are catchy, but it's not the same at all.

Bobby D Gray (bedhead), Friday, 11 October 2002 16:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Walk Among Us is classic.

A couple of friends and I have been talking for close to ten years about doing an acoustic Misfits cover band for Halloween. We actually learned a bunch of songs a few years ago...

And of course, the other way around there's Low doing their own songs in a Misfits style at Halloween.

http://www.chairkickers.com/low/archive/review/981031.html

I was talking to Alan last night, about the Spaceland show and he told me a story about the show that I must relate....

He had been reading "Get in the Van" By Henry Rollins (the Blag Flag book) and he had read the story about the night they played w/ The Misfits. He said that it took a bit of convincing but he got Mimi and Zack to do the whole Misfits thing. Earlier that day he got Zack to draw on the tattoos, and along with those he got him to do the Black Flag bars. So later on they are in the venue waitng for soundcheck, and Alan decides to go wash his hair cause he's feeling kind of grungy. So he's in the bathroom washing his hair and someone comes in and says "Nice Bars, man", and proceeds to take a piss. Al thanked him and didn't think anything of it. Then another guy walks in and says "Hey Des." The guy named Des leaves. Then Al looks up and looks at the guy, and then he realized: that was Des from Black Flag. They both sarted laughing. Neat-o huh?

Turns out this band are KLASSSSSSIIIKKKKKKK!!!!!!!

Saw them the day before yesterday, with a Ramone and a Black Flagger in the band and they were unbelievable.

I was expecting it to be a bit sad but NOOOOO!!!

I'm not even that big a fan normally. Thay played classics for ages and Jerry O was loving the crowd and stayed behind for ages signing things and grinning like satan.

Yes.

mei (mei), Thursday, 22 May 2003 06:42 (twenty-two years ago)

WTF did I not reply to this thread for? What is being the entire POINT of me if I miss things like this? Goddamn.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 22 May 2003 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

A funny Misfits related story, I was working the door of an all ages club that had just opened and we booked Bobby Steele's band "The Undead" to play. What shows up? Bobby Steele with a karaoke machine and a practice amp... It was pretty funny.

earlnash, Thursday, 22 May 2003 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha, The Undead... they were wacky. Like a sleazy version of the Misfits. Didn't they have a saxaphone in one of their songs?

Bobby D Gray (bedhead), Thursday, 22 May 2003 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Ugh, the new Misfits single (a split with the chuckle-enducingly-named BALZAC, a Japanese Misfits of sorts), "The Day the Earth Caught Fire" is nigh on unlistenable.

Bobby Steele is the most approachable man in Punk Rock. He likes nothing better than to chat with folks on the street. And he's tough to miss, what with the cane and limp and all. But, I reckon the man can't go three sentences without invoking the "M" word (rhymes with "piss tits!")

Side note of bonus trivia: Nasty Jack Natz of Cop Shoot Cop cut his teeth in an early incarnation of the Undead. Now he's a bike messenger.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 22 May 2003 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Was the phrase "piss tits" really necessary there?

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 22 May 2003 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, it rhymes with Misfits, don't it?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 22 May 2003 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Well so does "hiss pits" and I didn't see you bring that up.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 22 May 2003 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but "hiss pits" doesn't make me laugh.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 22 May 2003 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Point well taken, yes.

Anyway, I am now sad that I don't have Static Age with me at work today. I fear that not carrying it on me person at all time really does make me a goddamn son of a bitch. That--meaning Static Age obviously--used to be the only album I listened to for like six months straight, it was great.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 22 May 2003 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris H. (chrisherbert), Friday, 23 May 2003 05:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I keep forgetting that one of my few actual recorded appearances is on a Misfits tribute cassette comp. that some friends of mine released like a decade ago.

hstencil, Friday, 23 May 2003 05:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I think you summed it up rather perfectly.

Misfits: easy target, but great, fun music. Poorly produced? Who cares, it still sounds great. Misfits should've been a million-dollar enterprise's idea. They were so fucking conceptually great, but it took years for Hollywood and popular culture to get hip to the Plan 9 culture that it's a damn shame to be living amongst such unfortunately retarded-tiime-travelling shmucks. The future is not NOW! for these dolts, the future is 10 years later, when nostalgia makes such things aceptable.

Scaredy Cat, Friday, 23 May 2003 07:27 (twenty-two years ago)

So should I go see the Misfits and the Damned in SF (along with some other punk bands I don't care about) next month? We saw the Damned on Halloween and I was skeptical but they pulled out all the stops and were great. The show maybe would have had more power if they'd not played for sooo long, but I heard everything I cared to hear.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Friday, 23 May 2003 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Just so long as you're not fooled into thinking that the band calling themselves the Misfits are in any semblance actually the Misfits.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 23 May 2003 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

would you say the misfits now are less the misfits than the damned are the damned? does that make any sense?

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Friday, 23 May 2003 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

If Sensible and Vanian are still there, they're certainly more the Damned than simply Jerry Only is the Misfits (regardless of the augmentation of Dez from Black Flag and Marky from the Ramones).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 23 May 2003 21:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Go see the Misfits, they're great even if they're not really the misfits.

mei (mei), Saturday, 24 May 2003 05:50 (twenty-two years ago)

They play in State College frequently cuz I think Jerry has family or friends here. Jerry's also the most famous person I ever did a phone interview with (back when I was debating being a journalist - which I don't wanna be now, I wanna be a critic - and writing for the local paper Freshman year of college). He was surprisingly candid about the suckiness of that album American Psycho (he blamed Andy Wallace or somethin', I don't remember). Anyhow, they were damn fun when I saw 'em, despite having no singer and using the opening band's drummer. There was a line of kids who each got to sing a different song's chorus with Jerry. Fine nostalgia indeed, especially since I never saw the real deal and have nothing to compare it to. I must admit I rarely listen to these guys (a friend taped me Static Age and a mix of other hits back in high school), but Classic nonetheless.

Danzig solo stuff sucks!(except for the song "twist of cain" and when he did stuff with the "super group" band of hardcore & horror punk mix called Son Of Sam)And yeah, Hybrid Moments is the best 78-83 Misfits song. and the best song overall is Scream!(sorry, that's how it's puncunated)(can't spell that word)anyway, as i said before, Jerry Only RULES!

How do they write so many great songs? I don't know much about the Misfits but the two records I have are flawless and fun... Did Glen Danzig write the music and lyrics for the songs and if so where did he come from before this? What were the influences of the group and how did they form etc... I guess I could just trawl the internet but you guys probably have better stories.

Omg there's a thread for this! The Misfits are my favorite band of all time I think. I have a Misfits wallet, tee shirt, and of course the boxed set.

I was a bit brokenhearted when Jerry Only and company resurrected the Misfits without Danzig. There are many groups that can carry on without their original frontman, but this is not one of them.

My friend's band used to play a balls out cover of We are 138 followed by Return of the Fly if he caught people napping in the audience. Usually the locals didn't know what it was and would retreat to the bar, but one idiot actually had the balls to approach my friend at the end and he actually said... "Hey, I just wanted to give you some constructive criticism. But The Fly was with Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis".

And they said it would never happen. Never!!

However, this September, Original Singer/Songwriter Glenn Danzig, Original Bassist Jerry Only and long-time Guitarist Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein – for the “First Time in Over 30-Years” – will be stepping onto stage together as “The Original MISFITS” to headline Riot Fest & Rodeo in Denver, CO (September 2-4, 2016) and Riot Fest & Carnival in Chicago, IL (September 16-18, 2016).

From the time of their first gig in 1977, the MISFITS and their iconic imagery went on to become one of the most crucially influential, genre-defying bands to ever emerge from North America, the MISFITS significance extends well beyond the narrowed path of punk rock & hardcore. Although not cognizant of how significant they would become, what the MISFITS achieved in their initial six-year window deconstructed and redefined rock music.

All the while, the MISFITS with Danzig’s unmistakable voice, Only’s ferocious bass sound and the bands anthemic songs, melody-induced choruses and authentically bruising musicianship, cemented their importance with all ensuing generations, whether in arena-filled metal shows or in a sweaty 400-cap club in Tucson. And for the ‘First Time in over Three Decades,’ legions of diehard fans from around the world will have the opportunity to hear the Original Band that created thousands of bands in their wake.

Oh snap, Dave Lombardo is drumming!

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 29 August 2016 17:48 (nine years ago)

After months of speculation, the ORIGINAL MISFITS announce that drummer Dave Lombardo will join them for their two Riot Fest dates (Denver, September 4th and Chicago, September 18th). The original drummer for Slayer, Lombardo will be providing his propulsive beat behind Original MISFITS members Glenn Danzig and Jerry Only, with longtime guitarist Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein. Danzig and Only will be playing together on stage for the first time since 1983.

Lombardo says of joining the band for the dates, "The Misfits created the horror punk attitude and had a massive influence on modern rock, punk and metal. It was an easy decision for me to join them for these monumental shows. I was honored to be asked, and am very excited to be playing with the band. Judging by the rehearsals alone, Misfits fans will not be disappointed- this is everything they could have hoped for and more."

Glenn Danzig says, "I first met Dave back in '88 when DANZIG did four shows with Slayer in the U.S., before the first DANZIG album was released. Dave is one of the best drummers around, and I can't wait for everyone to see him pounding MISFITS songs live for these special shows."

Jerry Only says, "Dave Lombardo is a master at what he does. With the immensity of the two shows we're planning together, the biggest decision we had was who is going to keep time and power this monster machine on drums? When Dave Lombardo's name was thrown into the ring, Glenn and I were immediately on the same page from the very start, a good sign of things to come. I think the darker side of punk we created with the MISFITS spawned the growth and evolution of punk into thrash, and sired bands like Metallica and Slayer, just as we inspired countless others in the punk revolution."

i'm down. them, Megadeth, AND Fear in Tampa in June.

probably going.

seen the Glenn reunion at Psycho Vegas in 2019, on the one hand, yeah, it def felt a bit lame to be seeing the mega-sellout version of a show that in the 80s would have played in scuzzy, dank basements with shit PA systems and Glenn getting into fights mid-show half the time....but then the music started and I stopped caring.

idk that it was that much better than when Glenn was touring Danzig and brought Doyle out for the short Misfits set, (other than being full length), idk that Jerry Only's lame ass being there helped that much, but it was a mega cool experience for someone who couldn't be there during the original run.

It doesn't say so in that piece, but I presume Dave Lombardo is gonna be on drums. I interviewed him this week and he mentioned that he's currently playing with the Misfits, and is no longer part of Suicidal Tendencies because Mike Muir can't tour (serious back problems, I think).

but also fuck you (unperson), Thursday, 23 March 2023 22:04 (two years ago)

I think he is as well.

bummer on ST, guessing that means their tour/festival circuit is over (I wasn't gonna get to see em anyway but still...)
