Much maligned hair metal hacks or power pop at it's finest? Most of their early output despite its excellent melodies is ruined by 80's glam metal production and Derek "Whammy Bar" Frigo shredding over top of everything, but once Donnie and Chip were dropped by the majors the band took on a decidedly more Beatle-esque/power pop sound and IMO put out some really great albums including Tweaked, Ten, and Welcome to Blue Island.
For Chip's Madonna story, the Beavis and Butt-Head mockery and their reputation as Howard Stern's favorite some of you may know of them, but check out the songs! Start with "There Goes My Heart"

Tweaked is my secret favorite of the whole bunch, for all it reflects (from the title on down) some of the drug struggles that have dogged the band. But it is indeed really lovely. And I gotta for the two big singles on the debut because I wouldn't've heard about them otherwise to start with.

I'm not sure Donnie has ever beaten the drug problems as he hasn't toured the States with the band in years and he's always in and out of the group. His most recent solo album is great btw.

Man, according to Wikipedia their debut release was a cut on the Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer soundtrack!

their first two records were highly rated in the 1992 edition of the rolling stone record guide IIRC

Strength is actually pretty solid and the first step away from full blown hair metal. It's also a much darker record which explains why it didn't sell nearly as well as the debut. Here they are performing on Letterman in all their Strength era glory. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oB5jpUJeS_U

Oh yeah and Paul McCartney was slated to sing a song on Strength as a duet, but it fell through. "Time to Let You Go"
