S/D: Artist-owned Record Labels

Interesting how often an artist-owned label releases material similar to the artist's own music (it only natural, I suppose.) Rephlex and ~scape are two that come to mind for me. What are some exceptions? Do you think of the artist that runs the label when you listen to artists on the label?

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 11 October 2002 04:10 (twenty-three years ago)

haha search, of course.

destroy major label vanity imprints, by and large.

Some searches:

Twisted Nerve: Try and compare Badly Drawn Boy with Mum & Dad, I dare ya.

Geographic: stands up very well despite the shadow of Mr. McRobbie hanging over it.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 11 October 2002 04:20 (twenty-three years ago)

is ~scape good? Should I buy staedtizizm 1? (or whatever)
it's cheapish.

to make up for my offtopicness: destroy Grand Royale. oops too late.

Keith McD (Keith McD), Friday, 11 October 2002 04:54 (twenty-three years ago)

~scape is hit and miss. i really like the jan jelinek record and the second staedtizizzzhsnsmz. most of the rest is kinda dud.

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 11 October 2002 04:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Grand Royal was indeed mostly rubbish, but interestingly their sub-label Zubizaretta was actually rather good.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 11 October 2002 05:02 (twenty-three years ago)

i'd search DFA.
without the new black dice record, i'd say that the bands have a fairly consistent sound (well the owners of the label are producing the records)

also Ralf records.
i'm really not a fan of the Residents, but i'm a huge fan of Tuxedomoon, and am still trying to digest the Rhythm & Noise record i just got.

JasonD, Friday, 11 October 2002 05:21 (twenty-three years ago)

i have 'staedtizism' and it's very good.

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 11 October 2002 09:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmm, some tb6 stuff kind of varies in sound, compare say kevin blechdom and Erase Errata and there's a world of difference despite sharing the same 'ideals', tho' it is absolutely synonymous with da kid.
Destroy Twisted Nerve; it's bland, grey and oh so trendy that, even tho' we try, we can't even get style over content right.
How about Daniel Miller's Mute imprint anyone?

What you do think about Kompakt vis-à-vis the sound of W. Voight's own music?

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 11 October 2002 11:55 (twenty-three years ago)

SST records! It's pretty much all bad, but talk about staying true to a vision.

matt riedl (veal), Friday, 11 October 2002 11:56 (twenty-three years ago)

It's pretty ironic that all other bands on Moonfog are similar yet leagues better than Sigurd Wongraven's own band.

Siegbran (eofor), Friday, 11 October 2002 12:12 (twenty-three years ago)

It's pretty much all bad

Ha ha, good joke. I mean yes, SST should have stopped existing after 1988 or so, but there were many good releases (and yes, a whole lot of bad ones) prior to that.

Diego Hadis (dhadis), Friday, 11 October 2002 12:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I brought this up b/c I received a promo of a new glitch/dub record by this Montreal guy recording as DEADBEAT (Wild Life Documentaries), and while it's a really nice sounding record, it's amazing how closely it lines up w/ Pole. I had this image of Betke listening to it for the first time and saying, "Ahhh, yes, sounds very nice" b/c it sounds like his music!

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 11 October 2002 12:20 (twenty-three years ago)

That Deadbeat album is on ~scape, forgot to mention that.

search:
tricatel - owned by bertrand burgalat (stuff by april march, michel houellebecq...)
bungalow - owned by le hammond inferno (dauerfisch, experimental pop band, olympic lifts...)
merge - owned by superchunk (classic!: magnetic fields, lambchop, east river pipe...)
ow om - owned by howe gelb (m ward...)
chemikal underground - owned by the delgados (bis, magoo, interpol...)

don't know much about icerink (saint etienne) or west midlands (lawrence felt)

joan vich (joan vich), Friday, 11 October 2002 12:43 (twenty-three years ago)

"What you do think about Kompakt vis-à-vis the sound of W. Voight's own music?"

Pedant alert: Kompakt is co-owned by Michael Mayer. I suppose you could say that the Total-stuff loosely orbits Mayer and the Pop Ambient-stuff orbits Voigt (quite closely, often).

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 11 October 2002 12:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Search: Dischord, of course.

Mike Appelstein (mike a), Friday, 11 October 2002 14:12 (twenty-three years ago)

If you think Twisted Nerve is boring you should try actually listening to some that isn't BDB, Andy Votel or Alfie. Which is quite a lot.

All of Bob Stanley's labels (Icerink, Veston, Caff, EMIDisc..) have been flawlessly brilliant.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Saturday, 12 October 2002 06:43 (twenty-three years ago)

two years pass...
Yes indeed Icerink was brilliant and some bands worth rediscovery ! Who will make new pressing of Oval and Golden's
contribution to typical St etienne pop style . about Golden ;their second single including a pulp cover (whishfull thinking) is a must.
