This will always be "Always On My Mind" for me, but their remake of "We're the Pet Shop Boys" is excellent and really funny too because, well, they are the Pet Shop Boys !

LeRooLeRoo, Friday, 20 September 2013 21:22 (twelve years ago)

I don't know if "Love Life", "In Private" and "I'm Not Scared" should count as covers since they wrote them ?

Also it's a shame the great "Try it (I'm In Love With A Married Man)" isn't on the list.

LeRooLeRoo, Friday, 20 September 2013 21:30 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, why not? I say mind or u2 or void otherwise.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 20 September 2013 21:38 (twelve years ago)

'Always On My Mind', but 'Where the Streets Have No Name/Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You' second, since it annoyed Bono.

Predicting a landslide for 'AOMM'. I certainly voted for it.

Would've voted for the absent Bobby O cover - interesting hat-tip to their complicated past w/him.

etc, Saturday, 21 September 2013 00:29 (twelve years ago)

The Weill/Brecht cover is a lot better than it has any reason to be - all of the covers (or originals/demos of songs they wrote for others) are v.strong.

MAN

this is an excellent playlist

first I think it's time I kick a little verse! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 21 September 2013 01:16 (twelve years ago)

I'm gonna discount "I'm Not Scared" cuz they wrote it.

For me this is a close call between "Where The Streets Have No Name" and "Always On My Mind." I was baaaaaarely into the Boys in '91 and not aware of their cultural impact in the U.S. but their U2/Frankie Valli cover is one of the sexiest, most subversive reinterpretations I've ever heard. The timing was PERFECT: it beat U2's "irony" games by a few months and showed how leaden they were.

to be fair to Bono, he did fax a response: "What have we, what have we, what have we done to deserve this?"

and btw "It's Alright" is gorgeous in its 7-inch version.

I missed "Try It" because I didn't realize it was a cover

"Go West" wins for working on so many levels. Using a triumphant gay anthem about moving to the imagined paradise of San Francisco, but turning it into a melancholy double (triple? quadruple?) metaphor for both the end of communism and the rise of AIDS is true genius. It's all there in the song (the mens' chorus always about to break out into the Soviet anthem), but the video takes it even further with their blue and yellow outfits leading the way to "paradise".

'Always On My Mind' is so incredible, had forgotten quite HOW incredible until hearing it played out a couple of years ago, so huge.

ineloquentwow (Craigo Boingo), Saturday, 21 September 2013 15:47 (twelve years ago)

and the damn thing sounds like a demo!

Originally released as the 'demo' mix or something similar.

first time I've gotten to this thread on a computer - already told DJP he missed Try It and Rhythm Of The Night and Mr Vain and Break 4 Love and Philadelphia and imo The Crying Game -- this really should be a ballot poll.

also Go West will storm it from lurkers.

Originally released as the 'demo' mix or something similar.

The demo version was on the Actually Further Listening re-release, but that's actually the demo (inasmuch as it's pre-Julian Mendelsohn's remix)

I'm not a rockist, I just hate Rap-A-Lot (sic), Tuesday, 24 September 2013 04:18 (twelve years ago)

I also had a micro-anecdote about We're The Pet Shop Boys but it's late & I'm drunk

anyway there were four covers in the set* when we saw them on Saturday night but NOT Last To Die!

*by this list's rules: I wouldn't count I'm Not Scared bcz they produced the original. but guys they played I'm Not Scared in 2013!
