Old Time Relijun: Classic or Dud?

A friend of mine is waiting for "Witchcraft rebellion" (which is slated for release in June) so eagerly that he made me wonder whether OTR are any good... I gave "La sirena de Pecera" a listen (a bit inattentively I must admit) and it sounded like lo-fi cabaret music with a bit of punk in the mix. So, is there anything to make such a fuss about?

I've only heard the track on the Selector Dub Narcotic comp, which caught my ear a bit...

I played with them one time and I thought they were great. The drummer was Phil from Microphones and he has a good ear so his drumset played like a heavy truck. They are strangely mystical, strangely cathartic for a barebones garage rock approach (2 people!).

old time relijun is an incredible band. they play with the force of creation. i just saw them last night in oakland, fucking crazy. i bought a copy of the new album and i have listened to it five times now.

i would say that sirena de pecera is not the best one to start with, it was intended as an EP for the european tour, so it has some of the songs from the second album, re-done in italian and spanish. the new album, however, witchcraft rebellion is a CLASSIC, it will probably win them over a new following. it is different than the other albums, but i can't quite say how.

The throat droning was amazing. Saw them last night, and I'm still trying to process the experience. Definitely the most exciting band I've seen live this year.

Yeah, this is a great band. I saw them I think maybe a year and a half ago and Arrington had lost his drummer, bass player, and van to various emergencies (family death, van breakage, etc) and was continuing the tour by hitching rides with other bands and taking the bus. He played by himself and still blew Xiu Xiu (who he was opening for) away. His bizarre throat singing is impressive, even if it does make him sound like Popeye.

They've done some great songs ("Jail" sounds like a less self-conscious JSBX") but there's hell lot of filler on their stuff. I just heard some new K comp-thing and DAMN is it hard to listen to straight through. That said I dig enough songs that I'd say classic.

The most recent comp-thing is definitely just a bunch of odds-and-ends and alternate takes.

the new album on K coming this spring will be a classic, though. the new songs i've heard live trump anything they've previously recorded. The song "Cold Water" especially.
