The inverse of the "Gentlemen..." question; which record(s) have you bought, listened to and immediately thought "Christ, this is a classic"? That feeling when you start smiling involuntarily at track after track and you know you've backed a winner. The feeling that you would have been happy to pay double what you actually paid in order to own this record.

Particularly with reference to records you bought without being completely sure about until you listened to them.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 11 October 2002 14:06 (twenty-three years ago)

the last time i remember really feeling this was the streets record back in feb or march, talking with tom on IM and downloading each track in order, each with a "HOLY SHIT!!" or some such exclamation following it.

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 11 October 2002 14:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I remember buying His and Hers based purely on the reviews, having never heard anything by Pulp. And it turned out to be much better than I ever expected.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 11 October 2002 14:14 (twenty-three years ago)

It has happened recently but i can't remmeber with which rec but on etime that did happen was with Fushitsusha's double live. after every track it was a Oh my God!! and despite paying 32 quid i would habve paid double for it if i had known just how good its going to be.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 11 October 2002 14:16 (twenty-three years ago)

It's the second time I've mentioned it today but "Love Clinic" by Love Clinic is great. But then I bought it on Wednesday and played it last night (probably have gone off it by Sunday).

Tim (Tim), Friday, 11 October 2002 14:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Daft Punk Discovery I loved Homework but really wasn't impressed with One More Time. Bought it regardless. When Aerodynamic Digital love and Harder Better Faster Stronger kicked in I couldn't stop grinning.

stevo (stevo), Friday, 11 October 2002 14:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Count Ossie & Mystic Revelations of Rastafari's 'Grounation', £5 for 2-disc set, and worth double that for "Oh Carolina" alone

dave q, Friday, 11 October 2002 14:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Um . . . obvious canon ones:

VU+ Nico by Velvet Underground - knocked away by it all.
Unplugged by Nirvana - Same thing - every tracks a classic.
Unplugged by Eric Clapton - esp. the Robert Johnson covers; how does he DO that?
Songs for Young Lovers by Frank Sinatra - I'm sorry, but I Get A Kick Out of You followed by Can't take That Away From Me is AMAZING!

That is all.

"since i left you"

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 11 October 2002 14:39 (twenty-three years ago)

These sort of situations are best when it's a big surprise. You pop a record in expecting little & then can't believe your ears. It happened for me about two months ago when I heard the forthcoming Keith Whitman album Playthroughs. From the first listen, I just found myself saying "I can't believe how good this is."

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 11 October 2002 14:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Top of my head: Big Star's #1, Basehead's Play With Toys, El-P's Fantastic Damage (though I would only pay double if they made a better cover), Dead Man Ray's Berchem, NO NEW YORK,...

nathalie (nathalie), Friday, 11 October 2002 14:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Kind of a lost pleasure in my brave new MP3 world but yes The Streets and also the 2ManyDJs mix this year. And with 69 Love Songs actually there was a feeling of fucking hell, he's actually pulled it off.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 11 October 2002 15:03 (twenty-three years ago)

The Bees record knocked my socks off, had me smiling (unexpectedly) with every cut, only getting more and more excited.

Downloading the 4-track () sampler (Sigur Ros), the first two songs had me in bliss...

Sean@tangmonkey (Sean M), Friday, 11 October 2002 15:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Fox
BASE
ALPHA

+ 'Technique', 'Dummy' and, yeah, 'Original Pirate Material', yo.

DavidM (DavidM), Friday, 11 October 2002 15:10 (twenty-three years ago)

2manydjs actually took a long time for me to really, really like (it's now prob one of my fave records this year), mostly because i had to get into it via the non-obvious electro/techno/house tracks rather than the bootlegs.

some more i just thought of: discovery for sure esp. since homework really grated the few times i heard it; luomo's vocalcity; remedy and rooty; since i left you.

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 11 October 2002 15:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I agree with Michael in regards to the Avalanches. I also felt blessed when I heard "Polichinelle" - Prayerboat and "Quiet is the new loud" - Kings of Convenience.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 11 October 2002 15:22 (twenty-three years ago)

oh, also the clientele album.

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 11 October 2002 15:22 (twenty-three years ago)

five that come to mind:
* Orange Juice: Ostrich Churchyard
* YMG: Colossal Youth
* Stereolab: Peng! (my first exposure to Stereolab; I'd heard it in the record store and was floored)
* Ramones: Rocket To Russia
* Adventures In Stereo: the blue singles collection

Call and Response. Fun!

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Friday, 11 October 2002 15:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Both Montgolfier Brothers records. Too beautiful to be from this earth...
Instant classics.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Friday, 11 October 2002 15:44 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm too poor to risk buying albums without doing a bit of research - and all i do is read about/download music all day now anyway, so there's little chance for a pure discovery.

i can only think of a couple used records i've risked $1 on in the past five years that would qualify as great zero-knowledgers:

gary numan & tubeway army - replicas
the undertones' s/t

stupid internet.

brian badword (badwords), Friday, 11 October 2002 15:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I got Belle And Sebastian's If You're Feeling Siniter on a whim, before all the hype. Bash me if you want, but it sounded great. Mojave 3's Out of Tune really got me going too. I mean, I had liked their first record, and Slowdive of course, but the songwriting on Out was so good, and the blatant dylan/drake adulation was unexpected and mixed perfectly with a whole bunch of great pop hooks. More recently, I had a pretty good experience with Kevin Rowland's My Beauty, of all things. It took me a long time to get around to buying this, I guess because of the classic cover art but also because it's usually not a great thing when old distrubed singers try to make a comeback (think Biran Wilson). But I put My Beauty on and thought, geez, he can still sing up a storm. Sure it's overwrought near-broadway stuff at times, but Dexys always had that aspect anyway. Not a classic but I paid $6 for it so it stands as a winner for me.

g (graysonlane), Friday, 11 October 2002 15:53 (twenty-three years ago)

My clearest or most recent memory of this happening is In the Aeroplane Over the Sea.

wl (wl), Friday, 11 October 2002 15:55 (twenty-three years ago)

another vote for Discovery - it just kept going & going & going. Loveless, because I'd ordered it from overseas & I was in love with the idea of shoegazing & those opening few seconds of "Only Shallow" just sucked me off the face of the planet; & the Headless Chickens compilation Chickenshits was (& still is) a huge shock to the system.

Ess Kay (esskay), Friday, 11 October 2002 15:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Caution: this post may contain info on Spanish- and Portuguese-language records:

I bought Bersuit Vergabarat's LP Hijos del Culo from Amazon without hearing any more than about 29.1 seconds of any track. It turns out to be better than anything released in North America last year...

...except for Chuntaros Radio Poder by El Gran Silencio, which really was last year's best LP.

And I just bought Gilberto Gil's Bob Marley tribute album, Kaya N'Gan Daya, this morning. It's an instant classic.

Matt C., Friday, 11 October 2002 16:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie

Apples in Stereo - Tone Soul Evolution

Polvo - Exploded Drawing

Weezer - Pinkerton

And I mean this most sincerely.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 11 October 2002 17:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Weezer - Pinkerton (actually only after 2nd straight-thru listen but close enough)
Aaliyah - Aaliyah
Built to Spill - "Perfect from Now On" (it's grown off me since tho)
Lilys - Eccsame and the Photon Band

there are more but I can't think of em at the moment.

*cough*The Holy Bible*cough*. Also:

Bjork - Homogenic
Leila - Like Weather
Ladytron - 604
Pulp - Pulpintro thing

...and various others that don't immediately spring to mind. Must also happen when I get new Delgados on Monday, or I trample bunnies.

alexfack, Friday, 11 October 2002 18:29 (twenty-three years ago)

*cough*The Holy Bible*cough*Deserter's Songs*cough*. Also:

Bjork - Homogenic
Leila - Like Weather
Ladytron - 604
Black Box Recorder - The Facts Of Life

And all Pulp ones since 1993. And various others that don't immediately spring to mind. Must also happen when I get new Delgados on Monday.

alexfack, Friday, 11 October 2002 18:35 (twenty-three years ago)

...oh dear god how embarrassing. They don't even match.

alexfack, Friday, 11 October 2002 18:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Moonshake The Sound Your Eyes Can Follow. I wasn't overly crazy aboot Eva Luna, but once Callahan ditched Margaret Fiedler and guitars, I was his at "Hello".

Vic Funk, Friday, 11 October 2002 18:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Fuckin' ell, chalk me up for Lexicon of Love as well. First thing I ever bought on the recommendation of this board, and god was I glad...

Hate will do that to you, too. Did it to me, but I didn't actually pay for it.

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 11 October 2002 18:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Rings Around the World, which I knew only from "Juxtaposed With U" (which hadn't quite grown on me yet) and "It's Not the End of the World" (which I remembered more for the video at that time). The death-metal growls at the end of "Receptacle For the Respectable" pretty much sealed it.

Nate Patrin, Friday, 11 October 2002 19:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Serge Gainsbourg - Histoire de Melody Nelson
Talk Talk - Laughing Stock

Melissa W (Melissa W), Friday, 11 October 2002 21:28 (twenty-three years ago)

that is the first time i have heard someone say they prefer 'sound your eyes can follow'. madness.

for me the last time was probably 'how i long to feel that summer in my heart'.

keith (keithmcl), Friday, 11 October 2002 21:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Joie Dead Blonde Girlfriend's "Pretty As A Picture" album. Got it when he was playing a support gig (which was good), got it, went out after the gig, completely forgot about it, rolled into my room drunk at around 5am, released it was in my pocket, put it on on a whim... sobered up INSTANTLY.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 11 October 2002 22:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah Melissa is OTM about Histoire.... I bought it when I was staying at a mate's and he was very sceptical. I put it on and could hardly believe how good it was - everything I'd expected. Of course then I left it at someone's flat after a party and have never seen it again.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 11 October 2002 23:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Longer ago:

DJ Assault - Straight Up Detroit Shit Vol 4
Prince - Dirty Mind
Swell Maps - Jane from Occupied Europe: It could have happened, but I wasn't sure if it'd be good so bought it for a friend. He taped it for me and damn I should have kept it!!
but then of course he bought me Human League's Travelogue which is even better. Hooray!

Keith McD (Keith McD), Saturday, 12 October 2002 06:55 (twenty-two years ago)

always wanted to know where to start with a gainsbourg rec. I'll try to get this.

Vitalic-Live At Fuse

Before that was last year, Felix Da Housecat-Kittenz and Thee Glitz.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 12 October 2002 10:26 (twenty-two years ago)

But singles tend to do this to me more than albums these days.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 12 October 2002 10:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, it happened with _Vocalcity_ for me, too - my first listen was actually in headphones, and I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

Also, _Fourth Drawer Down_ by the Associates, _Script of the Bridge_ by the Chameleons, _Blue Day_ by Slowdive, _All that Glitters_, _Independency_ by Bark Psychosis, _The Pink Opaque_ by the Cocteaus, "I'm in Love with a German Film Star", Hawtin's _DE:9_ mix... this happens kind of a lot with me.

The Max Tundra record.

Cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 18 January 2003 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe The Marshall Mathers LP?

however, most of the records I truly love took me at least 2 spins (if not many more) to fully appreciate

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 19 January 2003 02:55 (twenty-two years ago)

DJ Yoda's 'How To Cut N Paste Vol 1". Starts off cool, into a Ugly Ducking remix, Thunderbirds scratch-up, that Delta Ebonics skit, Pete Rock, MC Paul Barman, the Sesame Street/Porno mix, Parliament. It's like a mix album with about 50 different songs on, and not a single one of them is a dud.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Sunday, 19 January 2003 04:04 (twenty-two years ago)
