"Because of You," Ne-Yo's best single imo: the peak of Stargate.

The one that most "should" have been #1 in the sense that it was the most popular and it's silly it wasn't #1 is "Crazy". My favorite is probably either Rihanna, Kelly, or Fergie.

Runners-up:

Oh!
Since U Been Gone
Blame It
Hate It Or Love It

Hate It Or Love It, had to fight my instinct to vote for Pitbull in every poll though

Since U Been Gone, quite easily

"Blame It" vs "Hate It Or Love It" vs "the instinct to vote for Pitbull in every poll"

g simmel, Tuesday, 8 October 2013 02:31 (eleven years ago)

I don't think I've ever heard that David Archuleta song before until just now. It's pretty bad.

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Tuesday, 8 October 2013 14:29 (eleven years ago)

Somehow not as good as the other list. Don't love any of these, though I like "Fergalicious," "Sweet Escape," (up to a point) "Heartless," "Oh!" and on the right day, "Smack That." Agreed that Crazy "should have been #1" but I was really bored by that song, so no.

Worst: "Boulevard," "Runaway Love" or "Photograph," though the latter is redeemed by that amazing Chad Kroeger restaurant audition story.

Voting Fergie.

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 8 October 2013 14:35 (eleven years ago)

While I did vote for Crazy due to it's inescapability, I don't feel like it was completely robbed of the number spot either, due to "Promiscuous" still being a pretty good song.

MarkoP, Tuesday, 8 October 2013 14:58 (eleven years ago)

shake shake shake shake shake it off

Hate it or Love it, just over Since U Been Gone

outsider house rules (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 8 October 2013 19:26 (eleven years ago)

Shit, I missed "Since U Been Gone" even after several people mentioned it. That one's gotten a little worn through after being crowned a classic, etc., but it's still pretty awesome, great pastiche of Metric, et al. into a mighty pop song.

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 8 October 2013 19:46 (eleven years ago)

favorites:

i know you want me (calle ocho)
because of you
fergalicious

i actually like almost all of these songs tho, even the david archuleta one

since u been gone is a good-maybe-great song and all but i feel like the idea that it is a uniquely excellent mainsteam pop song (or even uniquely excellent kelly clarkson song) is one of the top rockist lies of the 21st century

anyway i'm voting fergalicious

Since U Been Gone > Hate It Or Love It > Blame It > Photograph > Fergalicious > Crazy > Shake It Off > Forever

"Crazy" evokes 2006 for me more than any other thing about that year, so it's kind of astonishing to realize it never went to #1.

I have a weird relationship with "Since U Been Gone." The very last time that I ever attempted to predict a hit single in advance was Rilo Kiley's "Portions For Foxes" and I've come to associate SUBG as the song that became the actual hit in it's place. What followed was a brief period of resentment followed by a longer period of acknowledging SUBG's undeniable quality. Ubitquity has soured me on it a bit since, though, and while I still like it, I don't really think I ever need to hear it again.

I honestly don't know what you guys see in "Fergalicious," but if I had the choice to obliterate one of these songs from existence, it would definitely be the Green Day.

"Oh" vs. "Smack That"

SUBG bears the weight of being, I think along with 'Toxic' (timeline might be off), a key touchstone for Pitchfork-era indie kids admitting they'd liked pop all along (or, couching that in specious ideas that suddenly the music on the radio was much more exciting and experimental or sth than it was before). So its ''omg best ever they're playing it we have to dance NOW'' status may be due to some of that, but regardless, a lot of satisfied floor-filling did result and the song itself is, yeah, good-maybe-great, or great-not-quite-perfect. I will always associate it with balls belting it out at karaoke, holding nothing back.

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 9 October 2013 03:03 (eleven years ago)

that's v otm wrt my adolescence, with both songs, but that doesn't make either any worse

it wasn't only shiftless ugly indie kids who loved them, everybody in the universe also loved them, they are songs that are great

^^ post obviously honoring and supporting Qualcomm (zachlyon), Wednesday, 9 October 2013 03:49 (eleven years ago)

Yeah, that's what I was trying to say with my comment about satisfied floor-filling but it may have come off as snarking. They're both great and it's a good thing that more people recognized them as great. I was, to a lesser degree, one of those P4K Goes Pop strawpersons. "Rock Your Body" was more crucial for me though.

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 9 October 2013 04:46 (eleven years ago)

And, for the purposes of this thread, it was held out of #1 by "Candy Shop", a song with about 1/100 the staying power of SUBG.

"Fergalicious" because it deserved it more than the other three #1 singles from the album.

"Fergalicious" because it deserved it more than the other three #1 singles from the album.

This is the exact reason I voted for "Fergalicious" too, though I liked "London Bridge".

Absolutely. Although for that reason I couldn't really stand to listen to it now, 2006 being 'the year before I started to get my shit together(tm)'.
