what were the earlier complaints?

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 8 October 2013 08:33 (ten years ago) link

Calvi's first album was produced by Rob Ellis so there was a "PJ Harvey-lite" cry from the folks here who pay attention to the things like, the Mercury Prize.

Well, I liked a lot of her first one, and will be checking this. Would like to see her live and gawp

one year passes...

I used to think of her career as a really spectacular voice in the service of not particularly interesting music but I think the new album might be quite a lot better than that?

I mean even if it was just the title track and Swimming Pool and nothing else it would be comfortably her best record. Surprised there hasn't been more discussion here.

I'm not sure I've heard her before, though I have heard of her. But this album is great right now. Bit of Bowie and Polly Harvey, but maybe more like St. Vincent if she wasn't so full of herself and trying so hard? Lots of Siouxsie/Cure in there, too. Anyway, liking this a lot.

Yeah, this album grew on me a lot throughout the year. Swimming Pool was my way in. Such a glorious vocal.

Speaking as someone who really digs the Anna Calvi record: woah there pardner.jpg

I miss the days when writing about music was like, This is how St. Vincent might sound if she switched to an indica strain for a couple of months.

well I gotta admit that I heard "Don't beat the girl out of my boy" and I thought "yeah, this an't but the Black Crowes of PJ Harvey." Yet that tune and the entire record has stayed with me, and she gives me a fix that PJ can't or won't anymore, in that AC can very much do the Maria callas/Diamanda thing like a muhfuh. AC is also a shredder!

has anyone ever seen her play? I don't think she's played in the U.S.

Miles better then St.V on guitar imo.
