realized this is my favorite flavor of Alt, something about stacked power chords.

Man, you could do a whole thread on shitty down-tuned 5-string 90s bass.

Dropped D was cool when used as a means of voicing like in the Hum and Smashing Pumpkins examples, as opposed to like Silverchair's "Pure Massacre", which is just boring.

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 8 October 2013 22:43 (eleven years ago)

Nirvana All Apologies also used this.

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 8 October 2013 22:44 (eleven years ago)

fourth of july surely

anonanon, Tuesday, 8 October 2013 22:45 (eleven years ago)

Fourth of July is in a very weird tuning, from what I remember in learning that tune. it was fun to play.

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 8 October 2013 22:45 (eleven years ago)

Self Esteem?

Me & Mahomies (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Tuesday, 8 October 2013 22:46 (eleven years ago)

not sure on that one.

Soundgarden did use it on "OUtshined" and "Spoonman" though

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 8 October 2013 22:47 (eleven years ago)

Alice in Chains - Them Bones

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 8 October 2013 22:47 (eleven years ago)

a metal example would be Pantera's "A New Level"

STP - "Dead and Bloated"

Clarke B., Tuesday, 8 October 2013 22:51 (eleven years ago)

My son's into dropped Db - Drop D all detuned 1/2 step. He tells me that's how All Apologies is played

Dr X O'Skeleton, Tuesday, 8 October 2013 22:52 (eleven years ago)

oh, one of my favorite examples:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bs02sQxNnV0

the best part isn't the chuggy Drop-D riff, though, but the metallic harmonized verse riff

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 8 October 2013 22:53 (eleven years ago)

Dr X that's probably right, I think he did the half step thing.

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 8 October 2013 22:53 (eleven years ago)

the thing I like about Dead and Bloated is that the main riff is played on the 4th and 5th string, no low string (though the low one pops up during the chorus/bridge)

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 8 October 2013 22:55 (eleven years ago)

love Dead & Bloated

Me & Mahomies (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Tuesday, 8 October 2013 22:56 (eleven years ago)

that lame Candlebox song "Change" used it.

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 8 October 2013 22:58 (eleven years ago)

Meatplow by STP?

Me & Mahomies (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Tuesday, 8 October 2013 22:59 (eleven years ago)

that one's in standard

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 8 October 2013 22:59 (eleven years ago)

possibly tuned to Eb, but standard EADGBE otherwise

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 8 October 2013 23:00 (eleven years ago)

i guess i dont hear it

Me & Mahomies (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Tuesday, 8 October 2013 23:00 (eleven years ago)

trying to think of the rest of STP's catalog, seems like they used Dropped-D a lot on their debut (ie, "Piece of Pie"), but not much after that.

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 8 October 2013 23:01 (eleven years ago)

from my memory, Meat Plow goes

E
B
G
D 4 4
A 4 4 0 2 4 4 4 4 4 x x 4 4 4
E 0 2 2 2 2 0 2 x x 2 0 2

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 8 October 2013 23:02 (eleven years ago)

heh shoulda thought about the formatting

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 8 October 2013 23:03 (eleven years ago)

ignore that cuz it's not lined up

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 8 October 2013 23:03 (eleven years ago)

heart shaped box?

billstevejim, Tuesday, 8 October 2013 23:09 (eleven years ago)

yeah Heart Shape is def an example. just arpeggiated power chords in the verse. good one!

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 8 October 2013 23:10 (eleven years ago)

pretty sure Ministry - Just One Fix is too

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 8 October 2013 23:11 (eleven years ago)

Marilyn Manson - Beautiful People

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 8 October 2013 23:11 (eleven years ago)

Kinda surprised this got this far without these guys. Rage Against the Machine and Alice In Chains got tons of guitarists (for good or bad) using this tuning.
