This one's easy. No Jacket Required would be tougher.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 8 October 2013 20:31 (twelve years ago)

"If Leaving Me is Easy" is the surprise -- did he ever attempt this desolation again? Same goes for "The Roof is Leaking."

argh, missed out "Droned". can someone please delete this and let me start again?

and yeah, Johnny, I expect this to be a walk for "In the Air Tonight", but I like this album and hope to initiate a general discussion about it as a whole, rather than just have the competition.

arctic mindbath (President of the People's Republic of Antarctica), Tuesday, 8 October 2013 20:32 (twelve years ago)

Well, let's begin with Marcello's piece: http://nobilliards.blogspot.com/2013/02/phil-collins-face-value.html

I said this just the other day, but Droned is fantastic. Some sort of Glass-influenced ethno-jazz thing, I could have used a whole album of that stuff.

gotta lol geir (NickB), Tuesday, 8 October 2013 21:07 (twelve years ago)

xxxxxxpost: Alfred, I agree with you about the stark desolation of "If Leaving Me is Easy", to me it's almost suicidally grim. "The Roof is Leaking" is a slow, sad song, but there seems to be an indication of hope; although the winter is long, spring will eventually return. "If Leaving" doesn't offer any such respite. It's a relief when "Tomorrow Never Knows" kicks in, signalling, as Marcello wrote, a new beginning.

I really enjoy the upbeat tracks on this and especially the instrumentals. Most of the songs on here are very good and it's hard to pick a true stand-out, even with "In the Air Tonight" on the record.

NickB: yeah, I could listen to Droned all day. I like how it, "The Roof is Leaking" and "Hand in Hand" (my personal favourite of the three) form a mini-suite at the end of side one.

arctic mindbath (President of the People's Republic of Antarctica), Tuesday, 8 October 2013 21:09 (twelve years ago)

Have to say how great the cover is too. Didn't work half as well when he tried the same close-up portrait trick on the next couple (No Jacket Required is especially repulsive), but this one with the face filling the whole frame is just weird and awesome.

gotta lol geir (NickB), Tuesday, 8 October 2013 21:09 (twelve years ago)

The back cover scalp-shot is a huge bunch of do-not-want though. Makes me all itchy.

gotta lol geir (NickB), Tuesday, 8 October 2013 21:10 (twelve years ago)

I wonder what people's expectations of Collins' solo career were after Face Value first came out? Did they expect something along the lines of Peter Gabriel's output? I bet very few people expected he'd become one of the biggest pop stars in the world.

arctic mindbath (President of the People's Republic of Antarctica), Tuesday, 8 October 2013 21:13 (twelve years ago)

No Jacket Required is especially repulsive

I think this is quite a cool effect, though. Something to do with the way they're all slightly different colours?

I hadn't noticed this before but pretty much all of Phil's albums seem to take the Horrible 70s album titles like I've Got My Own Album To Do approach to coming up with a name.

it was discovered that there's no rule that a dog cannot play basketball (bends), Tuesday, 8 October 2013 21:16 (twelve years ago)

A bunch of people at school went to see Phil on the NJR tour and all turned up the next day in t-shirts with Phil's horrible sweaty baked-bean face on the front. Worst ever! That said, I'm now toying with the idea of getting the rings on my next stove top custom-made in the same design.

gotta lol geir (NickB), Tuesday, 8 October 2013 21:24 (twelve years ago)

I like pretty much the whole of side one of Face Value. Even enjoy the strange funky Behind The Lines refit, the crispness of the EWF horns is just wonderful.

gotta lol geir (NickB), Tuesday, 8 October 2013 21:24 (twelve years ago)

I hadn't realised that the No Jacket Required cover was by Peter Ashworth. That one doesn't seem to appear on his website for some reason.

The run from Roof Is Leaking > Droned > Hand In Hand seems to me as the peak of Collins' solo work. But to choose only one, it'd be Droned.

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Wednesday, 9 October 2013 06:44 (twelve years ago)

I remember the first couple of times I heard "I Missed Again" on the radio. For some reason, I thought he was singing "Ah, Mister Ginn" - I went to school with a kid named Pat Ginn and couldn't figure out why someone was on the radio singing about him.

My question is primarily riparian (Phil D.), Wednesday, 9 October 2013 10:42 (twelve years ago)

two years pass...

has anyone else been listening to Face Value on spotify recently and halfway through the album happened to glance at the image of the album cover in the bottom left hand corner of the screen and been TOTALLY FREAKED OUT to see this?
