I always thought that Black Sabbath was just as influential in the Gothic and dark indie world as they were for metal bands. And Joy Division was kind of the opposite: Their music lent itself perfectly to different metallic stylings from depressive black metal to symphonic death metal to the obvious gothic-tinged stuff.
