Each of those tracks is amazing, but In A Silent Way/It's About That Time is one of the best pieces of music ever, at least according to me. I can listen to that tune and recording over and over and have.

small miles davis had some great tunes

Just saw this today, figured this is as good a Miles thread to post it as any:

Wynton Marsalis discusses his critics, 1986 Miles Davis incident.

In a Silent Way is one of those albums that made me open up to a whole lot of different music.

Tarfumes, good video! I've not listened to much of Marsalis' music, but I gather he's somewhat of a jazz purist?

When I made this poll, I was tempted to vote "Right Off" for McLaughlin's guitar work, but listening to "In a Silent Way" again, my resolve is slipping...

yeah, very little of anything ever would come out on top in a vs in a silent way/it's about that time poll for me.

Would've voted for Spanish Key or Black Satin over Silent/About.

Liquid Plejades, Wednesday, 16 October 2013 01:36 (eleven years ago)

Spanish Key might have swayed me. IASW to walk this.

Yeah, iasw/iat. Honestly prefer Yesternow to Right Off. Might have voted for something from OtC if it was on here. But nah, would probably have gone with iasw as well.

Yeah, and that's putting it mildly. With guidance from Stanley Crouch, Marsalis has made a career out of defining what Jazz is and what Jazz isn't.

The irony is that so many of his influences/idols -- Miles, Monk, Ellington -- rejected the term "jazz" as confining at best, demeaning at worst.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Wednesday, 16 October 2013 14:07 (eleven years ago)

Marsalis is truly a great musician, and he deserves credit for that, but I think his music is hindered from getting to the "next level" of a Miles Davis type figure by his anal insistence on that definitional thing you're talking about. He's so invested in the boundaries of jazz that he never quite takes that risky, ecstatic leap beyond them.

You're obviously forgetting this:

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

In A Silent Way without doubt. I waded, uneducated, through jazz for too long in the pre-internet days without understanding why nothing I could find sounded like this.

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.
