STRONGEST EMOTION, THE DISCO EXPLOSION: It's the Grand ILM Disco Poll nomination thread (nomination time ends on Friday, November 1st)

Okay, we're finally gonna poll the most fabulous genre of them all, disco! This thread is for you to nominating disco tunes for the grand poll. But before you start typing, there are some important rules for the nominations! So please read the instructions below...

1) You can nominate up to 20 tracks.

2) The poll is for tracks released between 1972 and 1984 only. This is so that no proto-disco or disco house or stuff like that will be included. However, you can vote for newer remixes, as long as the remixed tune originally came out between 1972 and 1984. So, for example, the new remixes Tom Moulton did for this compilation are valid, even though they were only published in 2012, since the original tunes are from the 70s and early 80s.

3) I've already compiled a big list of important disco tracks, which can be viewed below:

The nomination list

All the stuff that's on list is already included in the poll, so you don't have to nominate any of them. Before you nominate anything, please check it isn't already on the list!

The reasons for compiling the list are to make sure no big tune is omitted from the poll, and to give people the chance to nominate more personal and obscure favourites. I'm gonna be updating the linked list and adding all the new nominations there.

4) The only disco offshoots that should be included in the poll are boogie and Italo, which are very close to "proper" disco anyway. I'm not gonna disqualify any nomination, but I hope you won't nominate stuff like old school rap, electro, new wave, or early house music. They may have been influence by disco, but they're not disco music!

5) Unless otherwise specified, I'm gonna assume your nomination is for the 12 inch version of the tune. If you want to nominate some other version (a remix, an album version, etc), please make it clear in your post.

6) Remixes are treated as separate entries, if they were mixed by someone else than the track's original producer. You can nominate and vote for these kind of remixes separate from the original tune. However, extended versions, 12 inch mixes and other such versions mixed by the track's original producer do not count as separate mixes.

7) The nominations close on Friday, the 1st of November.

Now go on, start diggin' those grooves!

I'm not nearly qualified to vote, but I'm looking forward to the results.

I'm sure most ILXors know plenty of good disco tunes, so everyone is qualified to vote.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 15 October 2013 18:56 (eleven years ago)

This song is credited to both The Joubert Singers and Celestial Choir, but they are the same band. It's often miscredited as having been remixed by Larry Levan, but apparently that isn't true, and Levan's names was only added to some bootleg versions of the single to improve sales. There's also a later version of the tune produced by Tony Humphries that has a different, synth-heavy sound.

Had always sort of wondered about this.

Also, YAY!

I've only discovered this track Paulinho Da Costa did with Philip Bailey within the last year, but it took no time at all to become one of my favorite disco tracks:

2) The poll is for tracks released between 1972 and 1984 only.

Tough but fair.

1) You can nominate up to 12 tracks.

Diabolical!

flopson, Tuesday, 15 October 2013 19:17 (eleven years ago)

flopson, Tuesday, 15 October 2013 19:22 (eleven years ago)

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 15 October 2013 19:22 (eleven years ago)

sounds like you really know a lot about disco

flopson, Tuesday, 15 October 2013 19:23 (eleven years ago)

I'm going to have to rethink what I nominate and when.

Please for the love of God let ballots be at least 50 slots!

YES! Will be voting for that Tamiko Jones jam.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 15 October 2013 20:00 (eleven years ago)

i think it might be in my top 5.

ewar woowar (or something), Tuesday, 15 October 2013 20:02 (eleven years ago)

I was considering between the 10 and 15 noms, 12 felt like a nice compromise. But if it looks like there haven't been enough nominations by November 1st, I may consider giving you some extra. But let's see first what people do with those 12 noms.

why do you get to nominate 613 tracks & we only get 12 each?

I get this point, but there are many tunes among those 613 I don't like at all. It's supposed to be a list of my favourites, I simply tried to compile a reasonably comprehensive list of well-known underground and mainstream disco tunes. Like I said, in some earlier polls I've noticed some very obvious choices have been left out altogether because people tend to nominate less known, more personal favourites, so the point of the list is to stop that from happening.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 15 October 2013 20:05 (eleven years ago)

if you're gonna post youtube embeds can you at least type out the names so we can ctrl+F them

fresh (crüt), Tuesday, 15 October 2013 20:07 (eleven years ago)

No embeds on the thread, please. You can start a separate campaigning thread if you want to post them, or simply post non-embedded links.

Also, please post your nominations as text, not as Youtube links. I don't want to start compiling the noms various links, they should all be written in this thread.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 15 October 2013 20:08 (eleven years ago)

if you're gonna post youtube embeds can you at least type out the names so we can ctrl+F them

This is a good point too. Just write down your nominations, it shouldn't be too much trouble.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 15 October 2013 20:09 (eleven years ago)

Johnny Fever, did you mean to nominate that Paulinho da Costa tune?

Tuomas, Tuesday, 15 October 2013 20:13 (eleven years ago)

Paulinho Da Costa - Déjà vu

1/12

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 15 October 2013 20:14 (eleven years ago)

George Benson - Give Me The Night
KC & the Sunshine Band - Keep It Comin' Love
Frankie Smith - Double Dutch Bus

3/12

here are two noms off the top of my head, seem like some fairly big omissions:

Claudja Berry - Boogie Woogie Dancing Shoes (1978)
La Flavour - Mandolay (1980)

chilli, Tuesday, 15 October 2013 20:15 (eleven years ago)

ok ok:

tamiko jones - can't live without your love
john davis & the monster orchestra - love magic
powerline - double journey
chic - i want your love
eddie kendricks - going up in smoke
johnny mathis - it's alright to love me

ashford & simpson - bourgie bourgie

(8/12)

ewar woowar (or something), Tuesday, 15 October 2013 20:16 (eleven years ago)

Phreek - Weekend

Spectrum, Tuesday, 15 October 2013 20:19 (eleven years ago)

Or Something, the Advance track is already on the list, so you have 5 noms left.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 15 October 2013 20:20 (eleven years ago)

I'd like to submit a track for debate before formally nominating it: Kiss - I Was Made for Lovin' You

y/n?

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 15 October 2013 20:25 (eleven years ago)

Frankie Smith - Double Dutch Bus

This is a borderline case, but I think the case can be made that fits here. I do hope, though, that anyone who thinks of nominating any tune with rapping really considers whether or not it's disco before posting it here.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 15 October 2013 20:30 (eleven years ago)

Hard to find stuff that's not on the list ... let's see...

Convertion - Let's Do It
Sylvia Love - Instant Love

Spectrum, Tuesday, 15 October 2013 20:31 (eleven years ago)

I've nothing against that Kiss tune. In fact I was kinda hoping that you folks would nominate some rock-disco hybrids that I might've forgotten about, as my knowledge of rock music is weak.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 15 October 2013 20:32 (eleven years ago)

Hot Blood - Soul Dracula
Chi-Chi Favelas and the Black and White Band - Rock Solid
Soraya - If
Brenda Harris - Freakin Freak
Marta Acuna - Dance, Dance, Dance
Fist-O-Funk Orchestra - New York Strut
Francie Simone - Let Your Body Run
Starpoint - Get Ready, Get Down
Halloween - Love Energy
Delight - Is It Too Late
Herbie Hancock - You Bet Your Love

20/20

cock chirea, Thursday, 31 October 2013 01:01 (eleven years ago)

Stuff that should be on the list that isn't yet:

Droids - Shanti Dance (parts 1 & 2)
Patrick Cowley - Megatron Man
Giorgio Moroder - Knights in White Satin

octobeard, Thursday, 31 October 2013 06:47 (eleven years ago)

Tuomas (or anyone else who has an opinion on this), would 'Lovelines' or 'My Body Keeps Changing My Mind' by Karen Carpenter be eligible for the poll? They were recorded between 1979-80 but not released until 1989 and 1996, your first post says 'tracks released between 1972 and 1984 only', so I guess maybe not?

Yeah, if they were released only after 1984, they're not eligible.

Tuomas, Thursday, 31 October 2013 08:31 (eleven years ago)

Thewufs, "Sunset Driver" by Michael Jackson may have been recorded in the 1970s, but I can't find any info that it was released until 2004. So unless you can prove it was actually released between 1972 and 1984, it's not valid.

Tuomas, Thursday, 31 October 2013 08:32 (eleven years ago)

Kitchen Person, "Romeo & Juliet" by Alec R. Costandinos was already nommed, so you get one extra nomination.

Tuomas, Thursday, 31 October 2013 08:33 (eleven years ago)

The track list should now be up to date. Only two days left to nominate!

Tuomas, Thursday, 31 October 2013 08:34 (eleven years ago)

So we have hundreds of nominations and somehow none yet for this prime early disco hit, no less from someone who was at least as much a trailblazer as Moulton or Moroder or anyone else I can think of:

Silvia - Pillow Talk

- i'll also nominate:
Cher - Take Me Home
Jackson 5 - Dancing Machine
Four Seasons, The - Who Loves You

finally a couple of TV show theme songs, not sure if they intrinsically qualify but both of these are prime disco grooves that were extended to full-length tracks, issued on 45s, and were hits in some countries:

Sammy Davis Jr. - Baretta's Theme (written by Dave Grusin and Morgan Ames)
Jack Jones - The Love Boat theme (written by Paul Williams and Charles Fox)

Lee626, Thursday, 31 October 2013 11:38 (eleven years ago)

Electra - Feels Good
Hudson, Al - You Can Do It (Get Up and Do Your Thang)

This is an amazing list of noms, well done all.

Tim F, Friday, 1 November 2013 21:46 (eleven years ago)

I've been wavering on whether to nominate the first two, but on the "crossovers more disco than rock" principle:

Public Image Ltd - Swan Lake
Gang of Four - I Love a Man in Uniform

I listened to these two, and I don't think they're disco. "I Love a Man in Uniform" might be a borderline case, so I'll allow that, but "Swan Lake" is clearly new wave rock, which I said in the initial shouldn't be nominated in this poll. I know I said I wouldn't disqualify any nominations, but I have to draw the line somewhere, sorry. No "Swan Lake".

The same applies to "One of the Lads" by 4" be 2". I'm not sure if it was a joke nomination or something, but it's quite obviously not disco at all, so it's out.

Tuomas, Friday, 1 November 2013 21:51 (eleven years ago)

In place of "Swan Lake," a crossover as much disco as jazz:

Sun Ra, "UFO"

Shit shit shit, so I was right about to post the following if they can squeak by - if not not, I understand:

Michael Jackson - Get On the Floor
The Jacksons - Wondering Who
The Jacksons - Your Ways
Donna Summer - Love Is In Control (Finger On the Trigger)
Earth, Wind and Fire - Fall in Love With Me

Also, if you've never heard the Jacksons album Triumph, go out and buy that shit now. It's as good as Off the Wall - maybe better. There are no bad songs, no mediocre songs - even the ballad, "Time Waits for No One," is dope. That record is straight fire.

Salsoul Orchestra - Tangerine
