Dog Man Star took a suck on a pill... (Turrican), Tuesday, 22 October 2013 12:31 (eleven years ago)

Well, this should be interesting. Recorded at the height of Lennon's "political phase", this has always been seen as somewhat of a turkey in his discography, coming after the classic Imagine and before he (mostly) ditched the politics for the Mind Games album. It would be interesting to hear what folks think of the lyrical content of this album... I personally think that some of the lyrical content is ill-advised, but I can't help but think there's one or two underrated tunes here. Listening to this album now, I may even prefer it to Mind Games... regardless of the lyrical content, there's some spirited performances here I think, which Mind Games seems to lack.

I've never heard this album but the lyrics to "The Luck Of The Irish" are hilarious

Always been curious about the live half, since Keith Moon's on it.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Tuesday, 22 October 2013 14:05 (eleven years ago)

Always assumed this wasn't for me--dissonant, stridently political--and avoided it. Unfair characterization, maybe.

woulda voted "Scumbag"

Have always loved this album so much more than Double Fantasy. The second CD of the Lennon Anthology is bliss (and the only one I've revisted again & again). Strident and dissonant is like bread and butter to me. Voted We're all Water, but the whole album is great. Never got into the jam album.

this is the worst album with Phil Spector's name on it (and his presence is barely noticeable as it is). I don't have a problem with political stridency or topicality but the tunes just aren't here for the most part. Lennon's knack for hooks and clever phrasing are sorely lacking. The lead off single is probably the best, certainly it's the most brazen lyrically and the melody has a certain mournful effectiveness. Attica State is the only other one who's chorus I can recall off the top of my head. the rest range from average to dreck.

"Free the prisoners, jail the judges
Free all prisoners everywhere
All they want is truth and justice
All they need is love and care

Attica State, Attica State,
We're all mates with Attica State"

Which facility was Mark Chapman sent to after he murdered Lennon, then? Oh...

tbf Chapman is clearly crazy and more in need of psychiatric care than imprisonment but hey that's the US criminal justice system for ya

Probably the only time Bob Seger and Archie Shepp shared a stage:

Yeah lennon was a stupid hypocrite in so many ways but this is a pretty moronic gotcha to pull on a dead guy turrican

"and who murdered you again? A CRIMINAL, that's who! hmmm"

Tesco and Horse Dobbins 2013 (wins), Tuesday, 22 October 2013 16:54 (eleven years ago)

Not so much a gotcha as a cruel twist of fate: guy writes a song supporting prisoners at a specific prison, guy gets murdered, the murderer gets sent to said prison. I mean, if that's not a cruel twist of fate, I don't know what is.
