former pop-punk/alt-goth band write a harrowing sequel to a perfect circle's thirteenth step. here it is on spotify: http://open.spotify.com/album/73h2unQGoSEL75TlZVl7Pb
feel like ned would like this, and tentatively feel like djp would kinda dig this, it hits right in that goth-pop muscle

I am halfway through the second song of this, which is further than I've gotten on any previous AFI release
I see why A Perfect Circle would be namechecked here but I feel it's a little too bombastic/conventional to really link to The Thirteenth Step so far? Very little syncopation, the guitars aren't used the same way, little-to-know time signature fuckery so far, and personality-wise the singing is not at the same level.
It's like Green Day covering The Thirteenth Step, which isn't as damning a comment from me as it would be from others.

"Heart Stops" sounds like New Order covered by Blink 182

the idea that this sounds like a tolerable amalgamation of Muse and Coldplay crossed my mind and now I can't shake it and it's lessening my enjoyment of the album ;_;

the thirteenth step comparison occurred to me in the middle of listening to "no resurrection"; i agree it's sort of like if a pop-punk band attempted that depth of mood, and i think it works really well

So far this new new album of theirs is absolutely a late 80s/early 90s "I am obsessed with the initial Bowie reissues and have learned about Bauhaus and love industrial music" album and since that pretty much describes me around that exact same time frame I am rather well disposed towards this.
― Ned Raggett, Friday, 3 October 2025 22:48 (two months ago)
In fact I'm very well disposed towards this. And it's barely half an hour long, maximum impact in minimal time!

Yeah, this is fantastic! I, erm, would not have predicted an incredible AFI album in 2025!
To the thread, I never came around on Burials, this new one is my favorite since Sing the Sorrow.
Listen to Ned folks!
