We polled the Albums over the summer and like last years 80's list we did singles starting on Halloween night (this year a day earlier). I did the first poll at 50 choices but it was too many then i cut it down to the Top 40. Going to cut it down to 35 for this go around. Counting backwards again as 1979 has already been done.

"Okay, ready, let's do it"

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 31 October 2013 01:57 (eleven years ago)

That's me voting for Being Boiled by the way but honestly I could have gone for Rock Lobster, Outdoor Miner, Just What I Needed, Shot By Both Sides, Le Freak, Wuthering Heights or The Model. Almost every song here is classic.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 31 October 2013 01:59 (eleven years ago)

Runnin' with the Devil

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 31 October 2013 01:59 (eleven years ago)

would love a Spotify play list of this. right now it is between "Le Freak," "One Nation Under a Groove," "Because the Night," "Rock Lobster," "I Wanna Be Sedated," "Damaged Goods," "Hong Kong Garden," "Surrender," "Just What I Needed," "(Love Like) Anthrax," "What a Fool Believes" or The Cure's debut song "Killing An Arab."

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 October 2013 01:59 (eleven years ago)

too much good stuff

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 October 2013 02:00 (eleven years ago)

lol. part of the reason why i went with 35 instead of 30 was because of Wire, Van Halen, The Doobie Brothers and The Human League.

Brilliant choice of photo.

Trying to choose between Chic and the Jam...will probably end up voting Chic.

It was impossible until I made it to them end and Wire showed up.

Teenage Kicks

I'll take the jangle-jangle over the throb-throb (brg30), Thursday, 31 October 2013 03:02 (eleven years ago)

Yeah, I know there's plenty of great ones ahead of it, but I'm voting for the Doobies anyway.

g simmel, Thursday, 31 October 2013 12:26 (eleven years ago)

I thought it would be easy. I saw the top of the list and thought, "Well, it's obviously either Blondie or Chic." But then I scrolled down and saw Radio, Radio and Just What I Needed and Surrender and What A Fool Believes and now I has a sad.

This must be the original DB records "Rock Lobster" referred to here? Album didn't come out until 1979. As much as I always vote B-52s anywhere I'm given an option, I'm giving serious consideration to "Just What I Needed." That record sounded absolutely thrilling to me coming out of an AM transistor radio in '78. Ridiculous amount of excellent choices here.

Too fucking difficult! What a year! No Talking Heads though? Went with my gut and chose "Shot by Both Sides"

Pingu Unchained (dog latin), Friday, 1 November 2013 11:04 (eleven years ago)

1. "Another Girl, Another Planet," 2. "Surrender," 3. "Hong Kong Garden," 4. "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)," 5. "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace Love & Understanding."

clemenza, Friday, 1 November 2013 11:29 (eleven years ago)

My goodness there are some doozies in here. Hard to pass up Outdoor Miner and Teenage Kicks, but Public Image is an absolute monster.

And what's Runnin' With The Devil doing in there when there's no Ain't Talkin' Bout Love?

1978 was my junior year of high school, so it all sounds excellent to me ... I could've gone with the Ramones, "Pump It Up," or "Miss You"

Brad C., Saturday, 2 November 2013 02:07 (eleven years ago)

Wish the Ramones song was Teenage Lobotomy so as to complete the Over the Edge trilogy

they're not chanting Lou, they're calling you 'boo' (Drugs A. Money), Saturday, 2 November 2013 14:25 (eleven years ago)

so that Spotify playlist had the full 68 songs. so i listened for a bit and 1978 was such an incredible year for music singles. some not making the Top 35 included: Talking Heads "Take Me to the River," Evelyn "Champagne" King "Shame," The Normal "Warm Leatherette," Peaches and Herb "Reunited," The Village People "Y.M.C.A." and Black Sheep "The Choice Is Yours."

I can get behind these results, "Rock Lobster" blew my pre-teen mind when I heard it on SNL.

Best thing that got no votes is probably the Cramps.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Tuesday, 5 November 2013 00:18 (eleven years ago)

The Poll of the Long Tail

Has talent, needs to figure out how to improve (staggerlee), Tuesday, 5 November 2013 14:59 (eleven years ago)

Because I am lolold, I was a radio announcer 1978, the summer of Saturday Night Fever and Grease soundtrack hits, and Andy Gibb. In that context, "Just What I Needed" was just what I needed.

Ended up voting "Rock Lobster" though, because that DB Records single in large part redefined for me what a 7 inch single could be: homebrewed weirdness manufactured outside the confines of a major label.

The sweet spot between bad and unpleasant (Dan Peterson), Tuesday, 5 November 2013 18:40 (eleven years ago)

Late for this. Would have voted for "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)".
