Jawbox - For Your Own Special Sweetheart

Why is this record so underappreciated on ILM? I was going to do a 'Classic or Dud' thread but FYOSS so obviously classic that there's no point asking the question. Or am I wrong?

I wrote about it here:

ok, I'll take the bait and say that I do indeed love this album although I like their s/t follow-up even more.

Moodles, Thursday, 31 October 2013 15:20 (eleven years ago)

What Moodles said. Don't really know the first two albums except the songs Static (which is also very great), but I really love FYOSW en the selftitled one.

Marty8501 (Marty Innerlogic), Thursday, 31 October 2013 19:15 (eleven years ago)

love this album

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Thursday, 31 October 2013 20:46 (eleven years ago)

So, what stopped it being huge? Genuine question, it seemed to me to tick all the boxes at the time...and it still sounds great today!

yugi ex, Thursday, 31 October 2013 20:50 (eleven years ago)

plus beavis liked savory

mookieproof, Thursday, 31 October 2013 20:52 (eleven years ago)

not sure how to respond, at least in my neck of the woods the album was a pretty big deal, but maybe that was a more localized thing than i think

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Thursday, 31 October 2013 21:01 (eleven years ago)

I could see it being too harsh and dissonant to become a big hit

Moodles, Thursday, 31 October 2013 21:19 (eleven years ago)

It may have been a pretty big deal but I bet it didn't outsell Nevermind, Doolittle or Repeater!

yugi ex, Thursday, 31 October 2013 21:20 (eleven years ago)

"68" is such a jam - it's kinda crazy in retrospect that it was only a b-side

nothing against this record but i think i actually like the first burning airlines record more

mookieproof, Thursday, 31 October 2013 22:25 (eleven years ago)

you would say that, wouldn't you - ROBBINS

bentelec, Friday, 1 November 2013 00:03 (eleven years ago)

you know what's a nice obscurity from around this time? that rollkicker laydown single

bentelec, Friday, 1 November 2013 00:05 (eleven years ago)

Nice indeed. That reminds me to buy the digital version. Saw that on Spotify, along with a bunch of DeSoto singles (and the Dischord "Jackpot Plus!"/"Motorist" single), and thought WAIT A MINUTE.

Andy K, Friday, 1 November 2013 01:08 (eleven years ago)

I got an advance cassette of the album at work and drove home in a blinding snowstorm while listening to it. What a charge.

Andy K, Friday, 1 November 2013 01:11 (eleven years ago)

Count me in for utter love of this album, it really is the high point of this strain of indie.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 1 November 2013 02:26 (eleven years ago)

'Reel' always raises the hairs on the back of my neck.

wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Friday, 1 November 2013 13:01 (eleven years ago)

also bears mentioning that the remaster REALLY did wonders for this record

too harsh and dissonant

i think bands like this, who i loved, were part of why i went off indie rock as the 00s went on and it seemed like nobody was heavy and noisy anymore

j., Sunday, 10 February 2019 01:33 (six years ago)

They were heavy, noisy, and very dissonant, but always in a way that was interesting and melodic, instead of just harsh.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Sunday, 10 February 2019 01:53 (six years ago)

25 years ago the Jesus Lizard was “indie rock”. Unsane were on Matador.

they're kicking ass on tour btw

call all destroyer, Saturday, 29 June 2019 00:53 (five years ago)

Just saw them in bk recently myself

Evan, Saturday, 29 June 2019 00:54 (five years ago)

Seeing them in a few weeks

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Saturday, 29 June 2019 04:53 (five years ago)

Just saw them Friday night in DC. The vocals were too low in the mix for me. I like Jawbox at their most tuneful and melodic, but the show I saw was all about the guitars ( which I like in doses but got formulaic at times). Bass player Kim C was fun to watch— arm movements, body twisting, big smile at times; contrasted with the guys nicely

happy 30th

great record (which '68' should somehow have made)

mookieproof, Thursday, 8 February 2024 05:25 (one year ago)

Loved this since it came out.

B. Amato (Boring, Maryland), Thursday, 8 February 2024 18:49 (one year ago)

ha the only jawbox i had was s/t, it's fine. i should listen then to this, as for 5 days i've been re-absorbed by quicksand, just post-hardcore on shuffle repeat. it might fit in.
