I listen to this probably every six weeks.

pplains, Wednesday, 13 November 2013 17:41 (eleven years ago)

might be their best sounding record?

festival culture (Jordan), Wednesday, 13 November 2013 19:50 (eleven years ago)

It does sound really good! It was my favorite Metallica album when I was a kid. Every time I went into a Sam Goody, I'd look for tapes by Diamond Head, Budgie, and Holocaust. Never found anything though.

ha i totally did that too

I still cringe huge cringes of "what was I thinking?" over including "Last Caress/Green Hell" on a airmix tape I sent a country radio station when I was 16.

I got hired anyway, but my boss told me in his notes on a yellow legal pad, "I would fire anyone who plays that song."

This was my Metallica introduction (heard "Crash Course in Brain Surgery" on the local AOR station). They were never better than this.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 13 November 2013 20:26 (eleven years ago)

Can I vote for the "Run for the Hills" beat they throw in there at the end?

pplains, Wednesday, 13 November 2013 20:29 (eleven years ago)

I legitimately want to hear from Alex in NYC about Track 3.

Alex in NYC (vassifer) wrote this on thread Four Horsemen is Metallica's best song, right? on board I Love Music on Dec 1, 2002

As far as Metallica covers go, I highly applaud their cover of "Breadfan" (ever hear Budgie's original? eeeek!), their Misfits medley is respectable, their cover of same's "Die, Die My Darling" is great, all though is sounds more like James is singing "Don't cry 'Tomato Baby'" instead of the proper lyrics.
While I heartily applaud anyone for furthering the name of the almighty Killing Joke, Metallica's cover of "The Wait" is largely sub-par.

fire = honoured

ahh good poll.

"Helpless" I love. The Diamond Head version is a classic, but Metallica ratchets up the aggression a bit and turn it into something different. I'll probably catch flack but "The Small Hours" doesn't do much for me.

"The Wait" is good, but Killing Joke's is much better (the chorus is too 'empty' on Metallica's), Crash Course is good enough, and I do like the Misfits covers, but I prefer the Misfits versions (and hate the lyrical changes Metallica made). So, really good e.p., Helpless wins.

Definitely voting "Helpless."

If I could only pick one track from this band (and I am not a huge fan) it would be The Small Hours.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Metallica puts a menace into the big bass breakdown in Helpless that I really like. Metallica covering Diamond Head is just ace, kind of one of the unique interpretive relationships in hard rock. You had alot of 60s artists do multiple Dylan songs, but in hard rock/metal it is pretty unique to have a group cover so many tunes, so well by another artist. This is let alone a situation with a band that got so big of a group that was so obscure.

This may have sent me towards Killing Joke, then the whole post-punk/proto-industrial movement, and finally to reject the thrash-metal and identity of my adolescence.

charm/anti-charm annihilation (Sanpaku), Monday, 18 November 2013 02:25 (eleven years ago)

The Small Hours. It's just such a weird, dark song. I think I like the original more these days.

I just re-bought the Elektra cassette of this as a totem item - this was the first thing I ever bought by Metallica and led to me really getting into metal in a big way. And Budgie and Diamond Head and The Misfits, etc etc, it was a great list of bands to check out.

Mr. Wristington, you're trying to seduce me. (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Monday, 18 November 2013 02:45 (eleven years ago)

I love this as well, but my opinion remains the same about their cover of "The Wait." Again -- points for covering the Joke, but it's really Lars' fault (surprise). He cannot replicate Big Paul Ferguson's furious toms, so he goes conventional and rides the high hat.

Alex in NYC, Monday, 18 November 2013 20:48 (eleven years ago)

"Helpless" is fucking unstoppable, though.

Wasn't my vote, but honestly, that's the track that represents this whole ep.
