Also worth noting they're produced and managed by Cian Ciaran of Super Furry Animals, which is why that last track has the krautrocky/electronic explosion at the end.

Not much press out there yet...

Gary Lineker might know his football but he’s also shown he’s got a keen ear for music.

The Match Of The Day presenter was smitten when he heard Red Light, the debut single from all-girl Welsh group Baby Queens – so much so that he tweeted his 1.8 million followers alerting them to the five-piece from Cardiff.

It also no doubt helped that Lineker’s wife Danielle is the cousin of Baby Queens’ member Monique Bux.

The former Spurs and England striker wrote: “Not often that a member of the family releases a single, well this family anyway. Good luck #babyqueens”

It was a publicity coup for the eye-catching group who are causing quite a stir thanks to their vivid style and harmonious sound – a mellifluous mix of soul, hip-hop and pop.

“We didn’t ask Gary to do it,” says Monique Bux, also know as DJ Buxy. “Danielle told me he liked the single and was going to buy it from iTunes. The next thing I know he’s taken a screen shot of his iTunes purchase and put it on his Twitter.

“And from that we’ve had lots of interest. What I was pleased with was that he actually enjoyed the single not because he’s a relative, but that he genuinely liked what we were doing.

“I was shocked, it was so nice of him.”

The group, who are managed and produced by Super Furry Animals’ Cian Ciaran, consist of Cara, Estelle, Monique, Ruth and Vanity – collectively two sisters, two cousins and their adopted sister.

“We’ve all known each other for more than five years. We all love music and we were sitting around last year when we decided to do something about it.

“We started writing songs and went to the studio with Cian. He really loved what were doing and wanted to get involved.

“At first he said let’s see how it goes but now he’s managing us and is fully behind what we’re doing.”

As for their eclectic sound, Monique says: “It’s really a melting pot, there’s lots of influences. We really are a collective – we don’t abide by one genre.

“It can be rock or soul, we just go with what feels good rather than trying to define ourselves.

“We like to think we bring something different than your average girl band.”

Life Goes By is the second EP from Cardiff’s Baby Queens. The five piece band - two sisters, two cousins and their adopted sister – mix soul and hip hop influences into their pop music and this EP contains two very different tracks. It was produced by Cian Ciarán of Super Furry Animals and recorded in Cardiff at his Strangetown Studios

Life Goes By opens with some lovely vocal harmonies over a soft keyboard. The track soon speeds up with a soulful pop vibe taking over, the lead vocal well backed by the other members of the group. It’s a solid pop song, melodic and pleasing, and it has the potential to pick up a lot of radio play.

Second track So Real is a total contrast. Coming in at nine minutes long it initially has a slow and chilled out feel, the delicate vocals floating over an electronic beat. A second vocal takes over, slightly faster and passionate. The tracks seem to be ending, some nice vocal play leading it forward, and then it bursts into life. The musical outro mixes soul and synth beats nicely to create an atmospheric and upbeat finish. This is a song with several very distinct phases and it all comes together very well.

Baby Queens are a young band with a great deal of talent and this EP shows that they are not content to go down a girl band route. Instead they take different musical influences and create their own sound from them. Look out for more from Cara, Estelle, Monique, Ruth and Vanity in the future.

Released: Mon 25th Nov 2013

Really the most underrated release of the year. They need someone to handle their PR. Album is incredibly good.
