Lists and rock books were a big part of my explorations of rock & roll.

The year by year top 40 lists at the back of Dave Marsh and Jeff Stein's Book of Rock Lists was good for helping me put different kinds of pop music that I loved in context with the rock songs of the same eras that I also loved. I made a series of year by year cassette tapes that was heavily influenced by those lists.

Dave Marsh Heart of Rock & Soul 1001 singles and short essays. It tells his version of American history - social, political and musical; and led me to hunt down the things I hadn't heard and open my mind to styles or artists I might have rejected otherwise.

Chuck Eddy Stairway to Hell was influential in helping me reconcile and accept all the different types of music that I loved. I purchased so many LPs from the bargain bins from that one.

Uncut did a 100 best singles of the indie era or something or other in the early 2000's that I turned into a nice cdr. That one was good for giving me a brit-crit perspective on styles and eras I was already familiar with or had lived through. I discovered "Freak Scene" (from an album I'd always had) from that one.

I really liked that 100 Records That Set The World On Fire (while no one was listening) list that The Wire did a few years back.

Plus the Nurse With Wound list of course.
