so, the todd edwards mix of his "walk away" is probably the best thing i've heard so far in 2002, but i know nothing of the man's own work (outside of the track on digital disco.) from what i can glean he's one of those slighty annoying jim o'rourke-style polyglots who likes to wet his wick in everything from glitch to hi-NRG to tech to whatever. i know tim had a record of his in his best of 2001, and the esteemable donut bitch has spoken of him before but ilx search turned up little. what should i be looking for?

For the more weird tech-y stuff... the Mobies and Mogies EP is really good. The "Open Session" 12" is really good, too... His stuff can indeed range from more accessible disco-ey house stuff to the really robotic glitchy stuff (like on "Mobies and Mogies")...

And I'm really confused with the O' Rourke comparison.

i downloaded a track called "sexy robot" (because of the title, natch) and it's a pretty amusing if frothy k-werk pastiche.

the o'rourke thing i thought of mostly because i read a short interview with him (lidbo) in the wire and he came across as a little TOO earnest to "be a part of every good music i find" (that's almost a direct quote), which i'm rather suspicious of as a rule, even in dance.

here is what I have of his:
Peoples Choice {Solarplexus} decent tracky stuff more for the DJ.
Glowworm EP {Intrinsic Design} some good tracks with techno beats, electro noises.
Click Enter To Exit {Forcetracks} Some really elegant deep techno house moments on here. After hours magic.
Big Spender - Les Nouveaux Riches {Plastic City} good clicky microhouse

His fulllength on Poker Flat is supposed to be great but I have yet to hear it.

I have a comp that he compiled called container tracks that has a great cutup of "Call Me Al" by Paul Simon which is just the bassline and the "mmm. mmm" part. no PS singing!

Jess do you know and like records on Plastic City?

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Sunday, 13 October 2002 03:46 (twenty-two years ago)

There is a whole Sexy Robot album and I believe it is a collection of really early stuff (mid 80s). He also did some tracks on Transmat as the Vanisher which were very housey and OK. The best thing I have heard from him this year was this dub of 'Love was made for Two' that Phillip Sherburne put in a mix online a few months ago. It had this amazing sound in it that was like someone sobbing into a vocoder.

The Todd Edwards remix is a red herring - jawdroppingly great obv., but the work is Todd's not Hakan's.

His 2001 album on Poker Flat - Tech Couture - is pretty great, really fleshy click-house that's a joy to listen to (though a bit light on melodies); on the other hand if you're gonna get only one thing from Poker Flat pick up the awe-inspiring Volume II comp which has album-highlight "Kiki de Montparnasse" anyway. Search also "Bilingual" and especially "Rochelle Rochelle".

The Sexy Robot stuff is pretty much authentic old-skool electro, like a stiffer version of the Data80 tracks. I find it quite enjoyable but I need to listen to it more.

I've heard other stuff which is pretty violent fucked-up glitch/drill&bass, like a jerkier Cristian Vogel circa All Music Has Come To An End (as if Vogel wasn't fucked up enough at that stage).

His output is varied...... he'll twist any genre into a Hakan track: dub, ragga, techno, IDM and disco. But my favourites are Proton/Electron, More Facts, 'the other one that sounds like the last two' and Coming Clean. His contributions to the Skam's MASK compilation proves capable of much more than the tracks listed here.... erm....... I'll keep you posted on this one

Ooh yeah that reminds me - search "Bad Girls Go To Hell", which is like a slightly raggafied take on Peaches or something.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 13 October 2002 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

hah, tim that really doesn't make me want to hear it, but okay, since you've rarely steered me wrong before.

jess (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 13 October 2002 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Well I never found a full MP3 of it, but the sound file I heard sounded good. I've always thought of it as Hakan's response to "Doom's Night", but with bad-ass vocals, if that helps any.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 14 October 2002 03:51 (twenty-two years ago)

much better.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 14 October 2002 03:52 (twenty-two years ago)

You can hear an (unrecognisable) remix of it in the middle of an online house-set MP3, which is more exciting for including Glowing Glisses' (excellent) "Shaked Ladies". See here.

Jess, you should know Data 80 track "Love Was Made For Two" from gabba.net. by now. It's him ! From what I've heard ( 3 tracks) this Data 80 LP should be more disco oriented: clicks with lush arrangements, orchestration etc. I can't wait to hear the whole record as I like "Tech Couter" a lot. It's a bit like house'y Cristian Vogel via "Rescate 137" or SuperCollider.

I got a release of his on Fiji and it is, well, quite all right. What's his deal, other than what's here? Is he like, huge in France?
