CDSTMS

nostormo, Friday, 22 November 2013 19:03 (eleven years ago)

this is the one i listen to least. will need to relisten but my impulse is "revolution".

the late great, Friday, 22 November 2013 19:06 (eleven years ago)

The problem with choosing Revolution is that it,and Suicide, don't represent the album sound.

nostormo, Friday, 22 November 2013 19:09 (eleven years ago)

Tell me, how do you feel?

brimstead, Friday, 22 November 2013 19:23 (eleven years ago)

Guys,it's spacemen 3!
Ilx' darlings!
Wake up! Youre playing with fire!

nostormo, Friday, 22 November 2013 21:18 (eleven years ago)

usually there's a clear winner or two for me in album polls but here i could go for just about any of these tracks. such a great album. voted honey.

fit and working again, Friday, 22 November 2013 22:08 (eleven years ago)

hell yeah, been wanting to play this album!

Bee OK, Saturday, 23 November 2013 05:44 (eleven years ago)

sure i'm voting for "Suicide" or is it "Lord Can You Hear Me?"

Bee OK, Saturday, 23 November 2013 05:46 (eleven years ago)

when is the Spacemen 3 poll again?

Bee OK, Saturday, 23 November 2013 05:48 (eleven years ago)

Bee OK, Saturday, 23 November 2013 05:50 (eleven years ago)

This is the only Spacemen 3 album I have. Nice Bomp pressing.

Nate Carson, Saturday, 23 November 2013 20:27 (eleven years ago)

You've heard their earlier albums, right? Because if not, you should.

Probably going to vote Revolution, predictably, but I always love how How Does it Feel? sounds like they're trying to cover a Basic Channel song at first. One of the really minimal ones obviously.

Mr. Wristington, you're trying to seduce me. (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Saturday, 23 November 2013 20:40 (eleven years ago)

"Suicide" even if it's one of those songs that's even better live.

One bad call from barely losing to (Alex in SF), Saturday, 23 November 2013 21:04 (eleven years ago)

A lot of these songs sounded better live and in their various rerecordings as Spectrum/SPZ. But I wouldn't change a thing about "Honey" or "Come Down Softly To My Soul".

xpost!

NoTimeBeforeTime, Saturday, 23 November 2013 21:08 (eleven years ago)

the spiritualized version of "lord can you hear me?" is not better.

sleepingsignal, Saturday, 23 November 2013 21:12 (eleven years ago)

Going with Suicide. Mudhoney pretty much ruined "Revolution" for me, since I always start laughing now...

dlp9001, Saturday, 23 November 2013 21:47 (eleven years ago)

I would've choose Suicide ir Revolution if they were included in a Taking Drugs poll

nostormo, Saturday, 23 November 2013 21:50 (eleven years ago)

They fit that album better.
Also LCYHM?, great as it is, sounds out of place in this record

nostormo, Saturday, 23 November 2013 21:53 (eleven years ago)

All great, went for I believe it as it feels like the backbone of the record.

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 24 November 2013 10:27 (eleven years ago)

I really should get some of the others ones. I just have this and the first couple of Spiritualized records (which I like).

Nate Carson, Sunday, 24 November 2013 10:35 (eleven years ago)

What's the deal with fade outs in this record anyway?
It seems like some of the songs suddenly fade out like they didn't have a better idea how to finish.

And what is the sax solo in the Lord Can You Hear Me ending? Why the fade out?

nostormo, Sunday, 24 November 2013 11:30 (eleven years ago)

why not fade out? maybe they didn't have any better ideas. so what? the fades are part of the charm of the album.

sleepingsignal, Sunday, 24 November 2013 15:04 (eleven years ago)

"How Does It Feel" with the lights out and a mind that's buzzin' = good times.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Sunday, 24 November 2013 15:48 (eleven years ago)

nothing, but the fades seems a little forced and maybe too early sometimes.

Jesus, I have to have an opinion on this?

Elvis Telecom, Monday, 25 November 2013 04:26 (eleven years ago)

Is that a bonus track?

A Skanger Barkley (nakhchivan), Monday, 25 November 2013 11:10 (eleven years ago)

They fit that album better.
Also LCYHM?, great as it is, sounds out of place in this record

Kinda shocks me to read this side of the taste divide for some reason, as I think it's a fantastically cohesive record. I'm squarely in the "you're making me choose!?" camp.

andrew m., Monday, 25 November 2013 16:19 (eleven years ago)

looooooord can you hear meee

goth drama is universal (latebloomer), Monday, 25 November 2013 23:09 (eleven years ago)

Sonic mentions that he'd first got a bootleg copy of the Beach Boys' Smile sessions while they were recording this and that he'd listen to them on the drive into the studio. #2 key ingredient (according to him) was the Vox Starstreamer.

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 22:56 (eleven years ago)

Fuck it. I can't pick. Basically my favourite album of all time.

Oblique Strategies, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 01:11 (eleven years ago)

PWF means as much to be as WL/WH.

Slightly leaning towards "I Believe It"

probly. plus dicks. good cover tho. also the best tune on playing w fire.

CANONICAL artists, etc., etc. (contenderizer), Thursday, 28 November 2013 16:40 (eleven years ago)

this record explain the main reason why Pierce post-Spacemen career is more successful than Kember's:
the first writes better melodies than the latter.for the most part.
though Spectrum's production is better than Spiritulized imo

nostormo, Thursday, 28 November 2013 17:30 (eleven years ago)

i voted revolution

the late great, Thursday, 28 November 2013 17:59 (eleven years ago)

the winner?

nostormo, Thursday, 28 November 2013 18:15 (eleven years ago)

The problem with choosing Revolution is that it,and Suicide, don't represent the album sound.

i don't know if i agree with this.

i really really love "how does it feel?" and i almost voted for it. it's kind of a dry run for "dreamweapon", right?

the late great, Thursday, 28 November 2013 18:26 (eleven years ago)

or else the product of it, boiled down from drone jams, don't know which came first

CANONICAL artists, etc., etc. (contenderizer), Thursday, 28 November 2013 18:46 (eleven years ago)

just downloaded this, never heard anything by them apart from that really long/great remix of 'Big City'. Question is...do I play it now or in an hour or so after I've smoked a joint?

j., Thursday, 28 November 2013 19:15 (eleven years ago)

"the first writes better melodies than the latter.for the most part."

I don't know if he writes better ones but he certainly writes more of them. Kember's basically recycled the same melodies for the past 25 years (part of what I love about Spectrum but I can see where people could find it tiresome).

One bad call from barely losing to (Alex in SF), Thursday, 28 November 2013 19:35 (eleven years ago)

Playing With Fire took a really long time to click for me. I feel like I'm still working out its vibrations.

i really really love "how does it feel?" and i almost voted for it. it's kind of a dry run for "dreamweapon", right?

Actually it's the other way around. "Dreamweapon" was recorded before PWF (but released after)

i can never help anticipating a giant cathedral-toppling racket when i hear 'lord' b/c of the later spz version w/ mimi parker - but then it never comes

j., Saturday, 17 May 2014 21:03 (eleven years ago)

four years pass...

Okay, here's a near-definitive piece -- Sonic, Jason *and* Will Carruthers, all on the record for the album's 30th anniversary.
