Just Good Friends is fantastic, the best track on Bad imo. Say Say Say probably my second favourite.

"Say Say Say," which I actually think is an excellent collab/production (i.e. George Martin doing his best Quincy Jones impersonation).

"The Girl is Mine" is fine if you regard it as two great singers anchoring a Toto track.

"Get It" just over "Say Say Say" and "Just Good Friends."

I like all of these to some degree. On 'What's That You're Doing' Stevie Wonder's vocals kind of make McCartney's vocals look bad.

soref, Sunday, 24 November 2013 19:48 (eleven years ago)

I think 'What's That You're Doing' is the only one that was co-written by two of these guys?

soref, Sunday, 24 November 2013 19:50 (eleven years ago)

Macca and MJ wrote SSS.

Oh, I thought that was written by McCartney alone. I've also just realised that I missed "The Man".

The wikipedia page for The Girl is Mine is pretty downbeat:

Since its release, "The Girl Is Mine" has received several negative reviews from journalists and music critics. Journalist Robert Christgau described the pairing of McCartney and Jackson as "Michael's worst idea since "Ben"".[11] Rolling Stone stated that the song was a "wimpoid MOR [middle of the road] ballad" and that McCartney was "tame".[12] Stephen Erlewine of Allmusic noted that the song had a "sweet schmaltz".[13] Jackson's breakdown with the "irrepressibly silly Paul McCartney" was "disarmingly goofy", according to Stylus Magazine.[14] Salon.com later described "The Girl Is Mine" as a "sappy duet". They concluded that McCartney had become a "wimpy old fart".[15]

"Get It" is with Carl Perkins, so if anyone actually wants to vote for "The Man," they could use that. For me, oof... gotta go "Say Say Say" even though I am more fond of "The Girl Is Mine" than most people, and I'm probably one of the only people here who would even think about voting for "What's That You're Doing." That last one does have probably the coolest backing track (Say Say Say is a little bit too ready for the dentist's office) but 6:19 is really pushing it and it only really finds its energy in the last minute or so.

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 24 November 2013 21:24 (eleven years ago)

Those high Macca harmonies in the last two minutes of "What's That..." are gorgeous, giving Stevie the ballast to add those crazy ad libs. (SHE LOVES YOU YEAH YEAH YEAH I LIKE I LIKE I LIKE I LIKE I LIKE I LIKE IT).

To be clear "Get It" refers to the Stevie and Michael duet from 'Characters', not the Tug of War track.

these are mostly all horrible.

I voted "Just Good Friends", as even though it's not a great song, I like it, and "Say Say Say", "Ebony and Ivory", and "The Girl is Mine" can all ingest taint fumes.

"Get It" was second place for me, forgot to mention

Oh god, I don't think I could call any of these tracks big favourites or anything. Ended up voting for 'Say Say Say'.

And then another write-in vote for "All I Do" ... and "State of Independence."

Actually listening to "The Man" for the first time and it's pretty pleasant - I'm liking how the '70s jazzy soft-rock production touches make a nice contrast with "Say Say Say"'s '80s pop-funk. "What's That You're Doing" is only OK, but sounds like P-Funk next to its unspeakable counterpart. "The Girl Is Mine", I don't hate. Or like, much. "Just Good Friends" is fairly rousing even though I despise that late '80s production. And I've never heard "Get It".

"Say Say Say", I guess.

""You Haven't Done Nothin'" is a 1974 funk single by Stevie Wonder, taken from his album Fulfillingness' First Finale and featuring background vocals from The Jackson 5."

oh snap

Does anyone know of a positive review and/or defence of Ebony and Ivory? I don't think I've ever read anyone say anything good about it, aside from maybe acknowledging that it was 'well intentioned' if that even counts.
(Personally I wouldn't disagree that it's comfortably the worst of these duets and misconceived/unsuccessful at some basic level, though I can still find some stuff to enjoy in it.)
