I mean, regarding the dälek, if you begin an album with a 10+ minute earth-whelming title-track the rest of your album has a helluva job. Which is why Through Silver In Blood is for me one of the greatest albums ever made - by the end you've almost forgotten that's how it began

Thomas K Amphong (Tom D.), Monday, 25 November 2013 10:29 (eleven years ago)

What's the premise here, really? Is is "completely dominate" in the sense "this song is so much better than any other on this album", or "this song, by its quality, form (lenght, for example), lyrics, subject matter, performance etc. structures the album, and is imperative to the listener's experience of the album as a whole" (or something like that)? If the latter, in my opinion more interesting, issue is the intention of the thread, maybe people could expand on their choices?

Mule, Monday, 25 November 2013 10:47 (eleven years ago)

I was posting under the assumption that "dominate" meant "by far the longest, therefore more likely to take up most of your attention/consideration."

Arctic Mindbath, Monday, 25 November 2013 10:54 (eleven years ago)

I agree the length will probably be crucial in most cases, but not all songs on here are long, so it should be possible to argue on points other than length, right?

'Blank Generation', mentioned upthread, is a good example in my opinion, as it, besides being fucking awesome (Quine!), sums up the general feel of the album. It's such a call to arms. The lyrics are great, too.

Mule, Monday, 25 November 2013 11:17 (eleven years ago)

― sweat pea (La Lechera), Monday, November 25, 2013 2:10 AM (10 hours ago)

Whaaaa? Absolutely not. For one thing, there's loads of awesome stuff on this record, and for another, the title track really works best when taken as a piece of the full record.

emil.y, Monday, 25 November 2013 12:56 (eleven years ago)

x-post, yeah I don't agree with that either. I mean, just in terms of single tunes that are awesome, what about 'Baby's on Fire'? But, hey, this is a pretty subjective exercise anyways, so...

Mule, Monday, 25 November 2013 13:00 (eleven years ago)

I don't really agree with it either!

For Those About To Rock We Salute You.

Holy shit is this OTM. This is the dictionary definition of a title track that absolutely dominates an album.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 25 November 2013 14:36 (eleven years ago)

Close to the Edge (although Siberian Khatru may be better, CTE is twice as long and therefore quantitatively dominates)

One Way Ticket on the 1277 Express (Bill Magill), Monday, 25 November 2013 15:11 (eleven years ago)

there should probably be a rule precluding side-long or album-long tracks.

Nostormo did just that by voting for "Future Days" instead of "Bel Air"!

does ascension count? on ascension there is nothing but ascension so in that sense it is the album where the title track dominates 100%. the only question is do you prefer edition I or edition II?

Half joking about born to run — I know it's the only song from that album played on your average classic rock station.

I'm in New Jersey, so our average classic rock stations are a little biased, but you can regularly hear probably 6 out of the 8 songs on BTR 'round these parts.

So is 'Cloudbusting'!

Mule, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 12:57 (eleven years ago)

"pink moon" doesn't dominate the last nick drake studio album at all. my fave from that album has always been "road" but there are many other intense songs like e.g. "place to be", "know" and especially "things behind the sun".

it's the distortion, stupid! (alex in mainhattan), Tuesday, 26 November 2013 14:45 (eleven years ago)

Disagree strongly with this. I Think I'm In Love and Broken Heart dominate this record in most discussion I've seen of it. And Cop Shoot Cop does to me, probably.

I can still taste the Taboo in my mouth when I hear those songs (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 26 November 2013 15:53 (eleven years ago)

sail away - not the song that ever got radio play, and not necessarily the "best" song on the album either. but it so completely dominates discussion of the album to the point that it influences how the entire album is heard and absorbed.

the rising - the title song is barack obama and the rest of the album is john mccain.

ace of spades - yes i am aware there are other fantastic songs on this album. but still.

i play too fast (which is the sign of an amateur) (fact checking cuz), Tuesday, 26 November 2013 19:49 (eleven years ago)
