I may stop doing the polls after this one but I figured we had to close out the 90's at least. There's a lot of songs and bands here that I don't recognize at all, but at first glance "Every Heartbeat" and "Fading Like a Flower" stand out.

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Monday, 25 November 2013 14:12 (twelve years ago)

Also, three consecutive #2 hits with "Wanna" in the name. And according to Wikipedia, that is the correct spelling of Rythm Syndicate.

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Monday, 25 November 2013 14:12 (twelve years ago)

oh god. One of these:

En Vogue - Hold On
Lenny Kravitz - It Ain't Over 'til It's Over
Roxette - Fading Like a Flower
Natural Selection - Do Anything
Cathy Dennis - Touch Me
Janet Jackson - Rhythm Nation
Amy Graat - Every Heartbeat

TOO HARD.

"Fading Like a Flower" should've been the massive hit "Listen to Your Heart" and "It Must Have Been Love" were.

the only one that I'm surprised didn't hit #1 is Boyz II Men

I got the glares, the mutterings, the snarls (President Keyes), Monday, 25 November 2013 14:19 (twelve years ago)

I remember Alias: the dude from Sheriff suddenly given his own hair metal band.

"It Ain't Over Til It's Over" narrowly over "It's So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday" -- like both of those songs i am unable to let go of the past

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Monday, 25 November 2013 14:29 (twelve years ago)

I will always think of it as "It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to the Cosby Show"

I got the glares, the mutterings, the snarls (President Keyes), Monday, 25 November 2013 14:30 (twelve years ago)

I didn't even realize It Ain't Over was a Kravitz original. I figured that was a cover. I voted for It's So Hard To Say Goodbye though. That song was enormous! And my middle school friends and I used to hang out and try to sing the harmonies.

peace on earth and mercy mild (how's life), Monday, 25 November 2013 14:33 (twelve years ago)

If you aren't voting for En Vogue, you are wrong.

deX! (DJP), Monday, 25 November 2013 14:35 (twelve years ago)

(unless you vote for Janet; also that's probably the best Boyz II Men ballad)

deX! (DJP), Monday, 25 November 2013 14:35 (twelve years ago)

voted for "Do Anything," one of my favorite Prince rips.

the objections to Drake from non-REAL HIPHOP people (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 25 November 2013 14:37 (twelve years ago)

oh dear lord, I'd completely forgotten this song

deX! (DJP), Monday, 25 November 2013 14:42 (twelve years ago)

en vogue easily again but much love for the janets, color me badd, jane child, snap!, and cathy dennis who probably provokes the most nostalgia for me here

balls, Monday, 25 November 2013 14:55 (twelve years ago)

HOO!

midnight outdoor nude frolic up north goes south (Eric H.), Monday, 25 November 2013 15:03 (twelve years ago)

I liked the Seduction and Lenny Kravitz songs (generally couldn't stand Lenny). A lot of stuff I didn't like, a few songs I don't remember.

clemenza, Monday, 25 November 2013 15:04 (twelve years ago)

wish this was a UK charts poll

a beef supreme (dog latin), Monday, 25 November 2013 15:06 (twelve years ago)

I mean, really, it's easier to point out the stuff I don't love:

Boyz II Men - It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday
Bryan Adams - Can't Stop This Thing We Started
Roxette - Fading Like a Flower
Color Me Badd - I Wanna Sex You Up
Bette Midler - From a Distance
Alias - More than Words Can Say
Billy Idol - Cradle of Love

midnight outdoor nude frolic up north goes south (Eric H.), Monday, 25 November 2013 15:07 (twelve years ago)

Will probably be voting Seduction. What a perfect song.

midnight outdoor nude frolic up north goes south (Eric H.), Monday, 25 November 2013 15:07 (twelve years ago)

man I missed Seduction – woulda been in the top five.

the Adams song is one of his few good ones but not enough for me to consider it.

the objections to Drake from non-REAL HIPHOP people (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 25 November 2013 15:11 (twelve years ago)

Got L.U.S.T. on my mind ...
She looks so sweet and lovely, but is she N.A.S.T.Y? ...
Don't know what I've got into, the girl is C.R.A.Z.Y. ...
There's no way to turn back, the S.E.X. is just too good ...

midnight outdoor nude frolic up north goes south (Eric H.), Monday, 25 November 2013 15:14 (twelve years ago)

For a band whose only major hit focused so much on spelling, odd that they didn't know how to spell "rhythm."

midnight outdoor nude frolic up north goes south (Eric H.), Monday, 25 November 2013 15:18 (twelve years ago)

I loved the ballad Cathy Dennis put out right after "Touch Me." "Too Many Walls"--had that on my Top 10 for the year.

clemenza, Monday, 25 November 2013 15:21 (twelve years ago)

isn't it great? I listened to it last week.

the objections to Drake from non-REAL HIPHOP people (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 25 November 2013 15:22 (twelve years ago)

Too Many Walls is one of the singles of 1991 IMO

Went for Every Heartbeat here.

Master of Treacle, Monday, 25 November 2013 15:30 (twelve years ago)

I think that was the last major Adams hit that I cared for

Master of Treacle, Monday, 25 November 2013 15:31 (twelve years ago)

i don't know most of these :(

gonna throw some love technotronic's way anyhow

dyl, Monday, 25 November 2013 17:12 (twelve years ago)

i know i should vote for en vogue or b2m or rhythm nation but man i really really want to vote for Snap!

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Monday, 25 November 2013 17:18 (twelve years ago)

that is acceptable tbh

deX! (DJP), Monday, 25 November 2013 17:19 (twelve years ago)

is it wrong to prefer "Human" to "Come Back to Me"?

the objections to Drake from non-REAL HIPHOP people (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 25 November 2013 17:19 (twelve years ago)

Honestly torn between Roxette tracks.

the objections to Drake from non-REAL HIPHOP people (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 25 November 2013 17:21 (twelve years ago)

xxp: yes (note: "Human" is still great)

deX! (DJP), Monday, 25 November 2013 17:21 (twelve years ago)

Oh, damn. "Come Back to Me" is there too. Maybe Janet's loveliest ballad.

a fifth of misty beethoven (cryptosicko), Monday, 25 November 2013 17:25 (twelve years ago)

we can all agree that the Heart song is wholly ridiculous, right

deX! (DJP), Monday, 25 November 2013 17:26 (twelve years ago)

well i know we can

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Monday, 25 November 2013 17:29 (twelve years ago)

get the party goin' on the dance floor
see 'cause that's where the party's at

_Rudipherous_, Monday, 25 November 2013 17:30 (twelve years ago)

Hold On would be my second choice.

_Rudipherous_, Monday, 25 November 2013 17:32 (twelve years ago)

I didn't even realize It Ain't Over was a Kravitz original. I figured that was a cover. I voted for It's So Hard To Say Goodbye though. That song was enormous! And my middle school friends and I used to hang out and try to sing the harmonies.

Well it is very much inspired by Earth Wind and Fire's That's the Way of the World.

deX! (DJP), Monday, 25 November 2013 17:39 (twelve years ago)

Kinda love that song tbh.

midnight outdoor nude frolic up north goes south (Eric H.), Monday, 25 November 2013 17:41 (twelve years ago)

"come back to me" is so good, woulda been my 2nd choice

dyl, Monday, 25 November 2013 21:18 (twelve years ago)

After listening to the ones I didn't know, I went ahead and voted for "Fading Like a Flower", maybe my favorite Roxette tune.

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Monday, 2 December 2013 14:29 (twelve years ago)

Jane Child with a bullet (one of my favorite radio hits of the past 20-ish years), "Come Back To Me" and "Hold On" following just behind. Love this era (despite the slow encroachment of AC stinkers that came to domination not long thereafter).

Spring Water With A Kiss Of Lemon (Old Lunch), Monday, 2 December 2013 15:21 (twelve years ago)

Not much I like here, it probably goes to Technotronic.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Monday, 2 December 2013 16:16 (twelve years ago)

I don't even remember "Fading Like A Flower" but I can't imagine that I'd like it

Got a bit of a soft spot for It Ain't Over, definitely Kravitz's best tune (not a huge accolade, granted).

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Monday, 2 December 2013 16:21 (twelve years ago)

really really like "It Ain't Over" and iirc there are other album tracks from the period with the same vibe that i also really like

Noodle Vague, Monday, 2 December 2013 16:25 (twelve years ago)

I have never before heard this Roxette song, how the hell did it get to #2 without me noticing? ps it's terrible

deX! (DJP), Monday, 2 December 2013 16:27 (twelve years ago)

Well it is very much inspired by Earth Wind and Fire's That's the Way of the World.

Well, I'll be damned.

how's life, Monday, 2 December 2013 16:28 (twelve years ago)

ps it's terrible

you're terrible!

the objections to Drake from non-REAL HIPHOP people (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 2 December 2013 16:31 (twelve years ago)

I only ever need to hear two Roxette songs: "The Look" and "Listen to Your Heart". Everything else I've heard is the musical equivalent of a fart.

deX! (DJP), Monday, 2 December 2013 16:37 (twelve years ago)

Joyride!

The Sign!

Noodle Vague, Monday, 2 December 2013 16:39 (twelve years ago)

"Listen to Your Heart" sounds too much like eighties Heart.

the objections to Drake from non-REAL HIPHOP people (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 2 December 2013 16:41 (twelve years ago)

"Joyride" is a fucking scourge that should not be tolerated

I'll grant that it's better than "Dressed For Success" but that's about it

deX! (DJP), Monday, 2 December 2013 16:42 (twelve years ago)

sounding like 80s Heart is much better than sounding like a bag of shit

in college this kid on my floor drove four hours each way in one night to see technotronic play in dc. deserves a vote imo

mookieproof, Tuesday, 3 December 2013 00:46 (twelve years ago)

Man, I haven't thought about "Pray" in forever, but I still hear "U Can't Touch This" and "Too Legit to Quit" a lot. "Pray" is actually MC Hammer's highest charting hit in the US! That is shocking to me.

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Tuesday, 3 December 2013 01:16 (twelve years ago)

Guess prayer works.
