Completing the Set: The Best #3 on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks Chart?

About a year ago, I finished polling all of the #1's on Billboard's Alternative Chart (available here) as well as the songs that peaked at #2 (available here). Time to complete the set and go through all of the songs that went to #3. I'll divide these into 7 eras: The 1980's, the pre-Nirvana '90s, Nevermind through the death of Kurt Cobain, the mid-90's heyday, the Nu-Metal craze, Bush's 2nd term, and the current era.

Without further ado, here are all the songs that peaked at #3 on Billboard's Modern Rock Chart in the 1980s:

I don't think "Fine Time" gets enough love. Terrific track. Especially the sheep.

Me too. All perfect songs.

I've lurked this board for far too long. Voting for "Personal Jesus", though "Crash" is a close second.

Might be the only person to rep for the Smithereens. It's close between them and "Personal Jesus," but that'll probably win without any help from me.

Seems like there's already some New Order love here, so... gonna go with the W'boys. WOOOO!

1988 - Escape Club, "Wild Wild West"

Never heard this before but my god if this isn't the worst rip of Subterranean Homesick Blues I've ever heard. Really a lovely cut by 10,000 Maniacs as well.

I could probably vote for The Primitives, The Pixies or Depeche Mode and be happy. Today I'll go for 'Personal Jesus'. A few years ago I was cycling through with some friends and stumbled across a Depeche Mode concert in a town square we were passing which was an unexpected treat.

i gotta vote for the pixies here, the odd nasal harmony bit on MAA-AAA-AAAN is one of my favorite musical moments ever.

also as a devoted DM fan, fuck personal jesus 4ever

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Tuesday, 3 December 2013 16:39 (eleven years ago)

I like the Smithereens too, but man, they were even dad-rock back in the day. Appearing on the modern tracks chart is a bit broad.

none? maybe Crash

1988 - Escape Club, "Wild Wild West"

Never heard this before but my god if this isn't the worst rip of Subterranean Homesick Blues I've ever heard.

I remember that song on the radio and video outlets when it came out. I didn't hate it at the time though I am pretty sure it didn't age well in that regard. The consensus was that it was a rip off of Elvis Costello "Pump It Up."

Yeah, it's still catchy and the video still creeps me out a little bit.

I used to sing the chorus to the Escape Club song over the Kool Moe Dee song, mostly to annoy others around me

SHAUN (DJP), Tuesday, 3 December 2013 18:47 (eleven years ago)

Lots of good ones here, but none as great as Fisherman's Blues

kornrulez6969, Tuesday, 3 December 2013 19:06 (eleven years ago)

it's "Fine Time" but voting "Here Comes Your Man."

ILM, you're so ILM sometimes.

pplains, Friday, 6 December 2013 00:06 (eleven years ago)

are the Waterboys an ILM fave? that's the only song i know by them, and i was semi-surprised when i was the first person in the thread to say anything nice about it and then only one other person also said something. had no idea it'd win.

deez the season (some dude), Friday, 6 December 2013 02:39 (eleven years ago)

Those "whooops" or "woooos" (or whatever they are) cannot be denied.

mr.raffles, Friday, 6 December 2013 13:10 (eleven years ago)

a lot of the Waterboys is reasonably meh imo but that song is ultra-classic and i was one of the voters for it
