he dropped the whole "i don't use pre programmed beats" thing and has made a great single. i don't think i'm into it because of the lyrics per say, but he's pissed. plus there is a great breakbeat section at the end of the song which is just hot as hell. great chorus backing it as well. haven't listened to the whole album, but this track is hot. outdated? is he shit? or is this just a great song?

Saul Williams to thread!

Amethyst Rock Star is uneven -- fascinating in parts, everything you'd expect from a "slam" "poet" in others. The verse he drops on Blackalicious's record is jaw-blowing, mind-dropping stuff. He's got more personality to his vocals than 99% of emcees I hear nowadays.

haha james got in before i could.

but this came out just after the album! i don't think he ever had a preprogrammed=bad schtick. me, i like him. i also liked hua hsu's review in the wire about his outdated throwback allure. "twice the first time" is still awesome

i suppose some ppl would say he was "pretentious"

the only thing wrong with "coded language" was krust's woefully gutless beat

bob zemko (bob), Monday, 14 October 2002 07:35 (twenty-two years ago)

"pretentious" is a word people use when they're threatened. not to say you're threatened, i just hate that word. it's used too much to dismiss things that often shed a ray of light.

saul rocks.

he'll be more than happy to tell you that too, whenever he finds this thread.

i wouldnt say the beat on 'coded language' was gutless at all...it doesnt kick in with a build up thats all

blueski, Monday, 14 October 2002 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the dn'b section of 'Penny for a Thought' is quite possibly the hottest beat EVER. I loved him after I heard this track.

The rest of the album is fantastic too imo, although some of it took awhile to grow on me...I still hear new lines every time I listen to it.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 14 October 2002 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

ha msp i am the word "pretentious"' arch-enemy. i only used it to have a dig at its users, they know who they are

coded language's beat never does kick in! the most furious, rightous screed and all poxy krust can come up with is

tshhh-tshhh/tshhh-tsshhh/tshhhh-tshhhh/daaa-na-danana-danana-danana-danana/tshhh-tshhhh/tshhh-tshhh etc etc

bob zemko (bob), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 00:11 (twenty-two years ago)

ok why did my brain not tell me that'd make me look silly?

bob zemko (bob), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

"ah, here's your problem. you got this thing set to 'evil'."

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
someone settle this for me: did Saul Williams star in a Nike commercial in the mid- to late-90s? I seem to remember him shooting a foul shot in a Nike commercial about Hank Gathers. I am positive the commercial existed, but not positive Williams was in it; but Google cannot even confirm the existence of the commercial.

thanks,
Charlie
