we are back after a Thanksgiving break.

Bee OK, Thursday, 5 December 2013 02:31 (eleven years ago)

now i'm starting to show my age as i don't know a bunch of these song.

Bee OK, Thursday, 5 December 2013 02:32 (eleven years ago)

This list: holy eff. 70s still probably my favorite decade for pop music.

_Rudipherous_, Thursday, 5 December 2013 02:34 (eleven years ago)

It's weird to think Autobahn was released this early. I probably heard it for the first time a few years later, at the earliest. Maybe not until 80/81.

_Rudipherous_, Thursday, 5 December 2013 02:35 (eleven years ago)

It's one of these, for me:

7 559 Labelle - Lady Marmalade
8 665 George McCrae - Rock Your Baby
9 743 Joni Mitchell - Help Me
13 1021 Steely Dan - Rikki Don't Lose That Number
16 1076 Stevie Wonder - You Haven't Done Nothin'
17 1104 Linda Ronstadt - You're No Good
25 1724 The Three Degrees - When Will I See You Again
27 1737 Gloria Gaynor - Never Can Say Goodbye
28 1768 Eric Clapton - I Shot the Sheriff
33 2003 Elton John - The Bitch Is Back

but I very much like a bunch of the others.

_Rudipherous_, Thursday, 5 December 2013 02:38 (eleven years ago)

Kraftwerk - Autobahn
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Sweet Home Alabama
Patti Smith - Piss Factory
The Rolling Stones - It's Only Rock 'n Roll (But I Like It)
Gram Parsons - Return of the Grievous Angel
Queen - Killer Queen

I'm good with any of these. Finally voted Kraftwerk.

Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Thursday, 5 December 2013 02:41 (eleven years ago)

Man. Didn't 1974 have a reputation for a while for being a crap year musically? I can think of three instances of it being specifically snarked upon (Lester Bangs, The Simpsons, Gilmore Girls).

jmm, Thursday, 5 December 2013 02:45 (eleven years ago)

wow, plenty of cool stuff here! didn't know No Woman No Cry was this big even before the live version. the whole album (Natty Dread) is great of course.

narrowing it down to

6 514 Al Green - Take Me to the River
8 665 George McCrae - Rock Your Baby
9 743 Joni Mitchell - Help Me
10 761 Robert Wyatt - Sea Song
11 853 Joni Mitchell - Free Man in Paris
19 1297 Bachman-Turner Overdrive - You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet
26 1727 Gil Scott-Heron & Brian Jackson - The Bottle
27 1737 Gloria Gaynor - Never Can Say Goodbye

crazy confession: I might prefer the Bread original to Boothe's version

Rikki Don't Lose that Number

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 5 December 2013 03:12 (eleven years ago)

Man. Didn't 1974 have a reputation for a while for being a crap year musically? I can think of three instances of it being specifically snarked upon (Lester Bangs, The Simpsons, Gilmore Girls).

Don't forget the Stray Cats in "Rock This Town": "He was a real square cat, he looked to 1974..."

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 5 December 2013 03:13 (eleven years ago)

Trying to decide between Kraftwerk and Sparks.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 5 December 2013 03:45 (eleven years ago)

voted the three degrees

1. "Rikki Don't Lose That Number," 2. "September Gurls," 3. "Rebel Rebel," 4. "Late for the Sky" (can't really defend that one--partly high school, partly Taxi Driver)

27 1737 Gloria Gaynor - Never Can Say Goodbye

Classic misheard lyric: my Methodist clergyman father once asked me: "Are they saying 'I never can say the Bible'?"

_Rudipherous_, Thursday, 5 December 2013 04:58 (eleven years ago)

(Might not have been the Gloria Gaynor version though.)

_Rudipherous_, Thursday, 5 December 2013 04:59 (eleven years ago)

Rikki

that's not my post, Thursday, 5 December 2013 07:19 (eleven years ago)

The 1974 recording of "No Woman No Cry" is surprisingly weak.

not really feeling this year. might have to go with Steely Dan. love the Dan but not sure if "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" is in their Top 10.

Big Star over Kraftwerk, James Brown and Robert Wyatt

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Saturday, 7 December 2013 17:25 (eleven years ago)

Never Can Say Goodbye is a gorgeous gorgeous song, though I prefer the Jacksons version.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Saturday, 7 December 2013 17:30 (eleven years ago)

A lot of artists I love here with songs that are nowhere near my favorites of theirs. (Big Star, Bowie, Stones, Green, Dylan)

My short list would be McCrae, Gloria Gaynor, Stevie, the Thompsons, Wyatt, Joni. Probably a coin flip between McCrae and Stevie.

diffidently worth every cent!!! (WilliamC), Saturday, 7 December 2013 18:11 (eleven years ago)

GOD DAMN SPOTIFY WEB PLAYER

Also, the "Rock Your Baby" on the Spotify playlist is a rerecording, not the original version.

diffidently worth every cent!!! (WilliamC), Saturday, 7 December 2013 18:28 (eleven years ago)

Stevie (political song for Michael Jackson to sing) narrowly over Labelle.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Saturday, 7 December 2013 20:43 (eleven years ago)

September Gurls vs Waterloo impossible. Abstain.

kA+herine (Drugs A. Money), Saturday, 7 December 2013 22:27 (eleven years ago)

i'm not saying it was a bad year, every year for music has been great to spectacular. what i was trying to say is that there are less stone cold classics in this year compared to other years in the 70s.

Bee OK, Sunday, 8 December 2013 01:11 (eleven years ago)

I was torn until I saw Rikki.

Help Me VS Never Can Say Goodbye

g simmel, Monday, 9 December 2013 00:08 (eleven years ago)

Rikki is going to win this but Rock Your Baby should. Those two way ahead.

ewar woowar (or something), Monday, 9 December 2013 00:35 (eleven years ago)

I liked 1974. Beginnings of disco, stoner rock is dying...Abba's first singles. Good riddance to bad rubbish (cf: shit Stones song).

Definitely a mellower year in a decade that favored "massive" hits. Was going to vote for Joni Mitchell then I realized that Lady Marmalade is on there.

Sweetfrosti (I M Losted), Monday, 9 December 2013 15:33 (eleven years ago)
