Zuma: classic or wankage

neil, god bless ya. his playing got more playful and his lyrics lightened up a bit. 'drive back' 'stupid girl' and 'lookin for a love' were great. its almost as good as Harvest, although its a toss-up. compared to the other records he did with Crazy Horse, this is the best one no doubts.

Zuma is brilliant... crackling, fluid leads... a great guitar sound, and great tunes. Probably his best electric guitar work ever... I think this album, Tonite's the Night, and On The Beach are a sort of trilogy. Can't explain why, but I think it's so. But why that lame CSN&Y tune? It sounds like filler compared to the other tunes.

Bizandy, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one year passes...
Awesome, this one is, though not as good as Rust Never Sleeps, IMHO. And I agree that this one, Tonight's the Night, and On the Beach read like a great big 3-disc set in some ways. I might even include Time Fades Away along with them on some level. Intense stuff, a bit dark, reminiscent in some ways of Lennon's Plastic Ono Band in its emotional nakedness. Classic. Oh yeah - the guitar work is superb - but I always choose intense & sloppy over technically perfect and cold in the guitar realm.

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Sunday, 9 March 2003 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

not worth asking. 90% of Neil's work is classic. He is king.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 10 March 2003 05:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Its actually clissic wankage, so take it as you will.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 10 March 2003 06:50 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
so classic it's not even funny

The best *Crazy Horse* record bar none, even though it'd be tighter if the acoustic outtake cuts weren't mixed in. Some of his other records from the era I feel are better all-around, but this is the one where he fully blends into the backing band and they seem on the verge of world domination every subsequent verse. It really doesn't get any better than "Cortez the Killer," "Danger Bird," and "Barstool Blues." Some of Neil's best singing and guitar playing is on this record.

Keith C (kcraw916), Sunday, 29 May 2005 00:16 (twenty years ago)

This is the one I listen to more than any of his others.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Sunday, 29 May 2005 00:45 (twenty years ago)

classique! and one of the best albums in the world to take a really long bath to. totally classic, totally transportive, just totally and completely. and on top of that cortez the killer! does one need to say more? maybe not, but i will! he's a total living legend from which music flows naturally, like from a spring.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Sunday, 29 May 2005 03:15 (twenty years ago)

taking baths to cortez the killer?

cutty (mcutt), Sunday, 29 May 2005 03:20 (twenty years ago)

well...yeah??

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Sunday, 29 May 2005 03:27 (twenty years ago)

"he came dancin across the water"

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Sunday, 29 May 2005 03:28 (twenty years ago)

just kiddin.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Sunday, 29 May 2005 03:29 (twenty years ago)

three years pass...

where the sun hits the water
and the mountains meet the sand
there's a beach that i walk along some times

and maybe there i'll meet her
and we'll start to say hello
and never stop to think of any other time

lookin for a love thar's right for me
i don't know how long it's gonna be

but i hope i treat her kind
and don't mess with her mind
when she starts to see
the darker side of me.

'lookin for love' and 'barstool blues' are my two favorite songs on this album, probably my two fav back-to-back neil songs of all time, thank you for plaaying@!

How in god's name is this masterpiece "wankage"?

Bill Magill, Thursday, 3 July 2008 16:02 (seventeen years ago)

"'cause when all the water's gone, the feeling lingers on..."

one of my all-time fave breakup songs, perfectly capturing all those mixed up feelings of bitterness and jealousy and acceptance and anger, and catchy as all hell.

So hard to POO.

gnarly sceptre, Thursday, 3 July 2008 16:20 (seventeen years ago)

wasn't this some kind-of clear malt beverage in the 90s?

burt_stanton, Thursday, 3 July 2008 16:24 (seventeen years ago)

zima was better if you put a few skittles in the bottom of your bottle.

M@tt He1ges0n, Thursday, 3 July 2008 16:28 (seventeen years ago)

Skittles in your zima, haha.

I was always led to believe this was one of his best albums. I tried listening to the whole thing while out walking last week and just thought it was okay. More entertaining than the self-titled one, though, and that lyric strgn quoted was a good one.

Bimble, Thursday, 3 July 2008 17:12 (seventeen years ago)

fuckin' bizarre: I was listening to "Lookin' For a Love" on my way to work this morning.

Also, this:

'lookin for love' and 'barstool blues' are my two favorite songs on this album, probably my two fav back-to-back neil songs of all time

...needs to be repeated.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 3 July 2008 17:14 (seventeen years ago)

also: can't think of any other song in '75 with "Drive Back"'s guitar sound.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 3 July 2008 17:14 (seventeen years ago)

It also has one CSN&Y's finest moments as a vocal unit: "Through My Sails." Usually the quartet went for bombast, but here they're subtle and low key.

QuantumNoise, Thursday, 3 July 2008 17:30 (seventeen years ago)

one=one of

QuantumNoise, Thursday, 3 July 2008 17:30 (seventeen years ago)

Oddly, I'm stuck on the long bits "Cortez the Killah" and "Danger Bird" which are so good that I haven't bothered with the shorter songs in between.

I susp. that this is the reason for Zuma's rather ordinary reputation. No-one actually listens properly to the shorter songs, and presumes them to be "filler".

Kind of like the musical equiv. of "The Wild Bunch", where you watch the opening scene and the closing scene, and drink/smoke/cook/screw during the long bit between.

PhilK, Thursday, 3 July 2008 19:10 (seventeen years ago)

that's too bad, because barstool blues is actually the best song on the record

M@tt He1ges0n, Thursday, 3 July 2008 19:12 (seventeen years ago)

That kid of happens though doesn't it? You *think* you know a record quite well, and then suddenly a song you glossed over suddenly announces itself as being *the most profound thing you've ever heard*.

Happened with me with "LA" from "Time Fades Away".

PhilK, Thursday, 3 July 2008 19:15 (seventeen years ago)

the album art is fabulous too...total danger bird, naked woman, and the cactus giving the bird.

Euler, Thursday, 3 July 2008 19:18 (seventeen years ago)

yeah i love "LA", time fades away is just great in general.

the whole record sounds smoggy

M@tt He1ges0n, Thursday, 3 July 2008 19:18 (seventeen years ago)

'Pardon My Heart' is a gem.

Does that make me a bender?

Fer Ark, Thursday, 3 July 2008 19:37 (seventeen years ago)

omg yeah LA is soooo good - "city in the smog/dontcha wish that you could be hear too?" says it all

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 3 July 2008 19:46 (seventeen years ago)

Time Fades Away is my fave Neil Young album.

I susp. that this is the reason for Zuma's rather ordinary reputation.

I think this record's rep has grown with time. When it was released, it seems as if it was considered consistent and balanced, if a little by the numbers. But most folks I know prefer it to, say, Harvest.

QuantumNoise, Thursday, 3 July 2008 20:26 (seventeen years ago)

I susp. that this is the reason for Zuma's rather ordinary reputation

What? I must have been moving in the wrong circles or something, but Zuma was always one of the most appreciated of Neil Young's albums amongst people I know... y'know "Cortez the Killer", "Danger Bird" etc

Tom D., Friday, 4 July 2008 16:30 (seventeen years ago)

PhilK, you are incorrect about Zuma and The Wild Bunch!

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Friday, 4 July 2008 16:45 (seventeen years ago)

I heard the new one Same Old Man. It has this awesome blue-eyed/southern soul song called "Hurt My Baby." He is dramatic, as someone pointed out. But I dig this song. It's one of them raspy-dude tunes somewhere between the Boss, Michael McDonald and Starbucks adult contemporary. Yet, it's a really convincing and hypnotic ballad.

QuantumNoise, Friday, 4 July 2008 18:57 (seventeen years ago)

Sorry, wrong thread! Back to John Hiatt!

QuantumNoise, Friday, 4 July 2008 18:58 (seventeen years ago)

Now back to Zuma

I/m going to re-read the Zuma stuff in that Rolling Stone book that collects many of their pieces on the dude.

QuantumNoise, Friday, 4 July 2008 19:01 (seventeen years ago)

that's too bad, because barstool blues is actually the best song on the record

as much as cortez the killer is a major neil guitar moment, i don't think it tops the last twenty seconds of this track. i love how it just murmurs away after the high notes and ends, so perfect...

strgn, Friday, 4 July 2008 19:13 (seventeen years ago)

No-one actually listens properly to the shorter songs, and presumes them to be "filler".

wtf -- are you joking?

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 4 July 2008 19:19 (seventeen years ago)

Is it me or do aspects of Zuma sound as if Neil dusted off his old Beatles records? The La La La's in "Stupid Girl" are an obvious example. But the rest of record, even the longer tunes, is fairly focused and poppy as well. I def think this could be a fave for folks in Dinosaur Jr. and Teenage Fanclub.
