About a year ago, I finished polling all of the #1's on Billboard's Alternative Chart (available here) as well as the songs that peaked at #2 (available here). Time to complete the set and go through all of the songs that went to #3.

So far:

Part 1: The 1980's
Part 2: This page

Coming Soon:

Part 3: Nevermind through the death of Kurt Cobain

Birdhouse In Your Soul

kornrulez6969, Friday, 13 December 2013 15:19 (eleven years ago)

Funny, I was listening to "The Crying Scene" (AC's biggest American hit) just last week. The production is boxy but it still works.

Man I listened to BAD and "Ballerina Out of Control" quite a bit around this time in '91.

birdhouse easy, this list not too impressive to me

ciderpress, Friday, 13 December 2013 15:25 (eleven years ago)

It's the definition of derivative, but "The Globe" is still catchy as hell.

LimbsKing, Friday, 13 December 2013 15:28 (eleven years ago)

"King of the Mountain" sounds like weak '85-era Mellencamp.

Bit of a weak list, with most of these being far from the bands' best.
Would love to throw a vote AC or Squeeze's way, but... EMF.

"Globe" vs. "Birdhouse." Went with the one I'd most wanna hear right now (B.A.D.).

man had no idea the connells had a big modern rock radio hit in 90, figured there success circa '74-75' was standard college radio also rans getting swept onto commercial radio in the wave of alt hysteria.

balls, Friday, 13 December 2013 17:59 (eleven years ago)

This is the best Living Colour song. So many hooks. I don't even think I've listened to Time's Up since the 1990s, but one or another part from "Type" drifts through my head at least once a month.

how's life, Friday, 13 December 2013 18:00 (eleven years ago)

A bunch I don't know (and going by artist, probably glad I don't know). If it were BAD's Einstein song, would gladly vote for that; ditto the Hoodoo Guru's "What's My Scene." As is, yawn, "Shiny Happy People." (Which I've always liked, especially the video. If you despise both, I do understand.)

clemenza, Friday, 13 December 2013 18:26 (eleven years ago)

I read once that you can hear Dice swearing in the "Unbelievable" sample, but I don't hear it.

LimbsKing, Friday, 13 December 2013 21:49 (eleven years ago)

Living Colour is an easy choice here

Ornate Coleman (Moodles), Friday, 13 December 2013 22:46 (eleven years ago)

This is *so* Unbelievable it's not even funny.

Defenders of Tim Machine, come forth.

"Under the God" -- I will defend that.

me too and one day i'll check out the pre-diesel and dust stuff on spotify i've always heard is great. blue sky mining and time's up similar - followups to big breakthroughs that weren't quite as successful but hardly flopped, somewhere near or at the top of the critic's polls and then completely forgotten by decade's end. played the hell out of both of them at the time now the only time i hear anything from either is when some classic alternative station plays 'blue sky mine' or 'forgotten years' or if i play 'solace of you' on youtube.

balls, Monday, 16 December 2013 16:46 (eleven years ago)

Never knew Dice was sampled in "Unbelievable."

Divvy Bikes to Watch Out For (Eazy), Monday, 16 December 2013 16:56 (eleven years ago)

The opening guitar figure in "Blue Sky Mine" reminded me at the time of "Channel Z," enough to confuse me.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Was Bush still releasing hits after the Nu-Metal craze? I thought they came and went quickly.

Was Bush still releasing hits after the Nu-Metal craze? I thought they came and went quickly.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who initially misinterpreted "Bush's 2nd term" as meaning that.

Bush actually faded away for a couple of years before resurfacing in 2011, and they actually scored a #1 modern rock hit a few years back with "The Sound of Winter"

Frontier Psychiatrist, Wednesday, 18 December 2013 09:15 (eleven years ago)

Bush had a 12-year gap between #1's -- "The Chemicals Between Us" (1999) "Sound of Winter" (2011). I think it's second only to Jane's Addiction's 13 years between "Been Caught Stealing" (1990) and "Just Because" (2003).

System, Thursday, 19 December 2013 00:01 (eleven years ago)

Those really weren't Squeeze or the Hoodoo Gurus' best songs, that's for sure.

mr.raffles, Thursday, 19 December 2013 01:02 (eleven years ago)

trying to think if this is the first time TMBG was won an ilm poll against comparably successful records by other artists

some dude, Thursday, 19 December 2013 01:13 (eleven years ago)

Yay for TMBG! Boo for "Shiny Happy People", such a dreadful cash-in. I prefer the Fatima Mansions messed up cover version.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 19 December 2013 01:38 (eleven years ago)

connells were jobbed

BAD was robbed.

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Thursday, 19 December 2013 01:59 (eleven years ago)

Now I'd vote Material Issue but at the time I listened to that BAD album obsessively.

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Thursday, 19 December 2013 02:00 (eleven years ago)

Missed this but highly approve of the #1 result.

Nate Carson, Friday, 27 December 2013 12:04 (eleven years ago)

Can't believe 3 of you voted for Ocean Blue.

how's life, Friday, 27 December 2013 12:07 (eleven years ago)

Yeah I'm p sure I voted Material Issue as well

Quarterpayne McRapp (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 27 December 2013 19:19 (eleven years ago)

Deserved to walk away with it.

One of the best pop songs of the last 25 years.
