I've always thought the message on the cover of The Howlin' Wolf Album was a bit desperate. To basically say, "He thinks this album is shit, but, uh, he thought the electric guitar was shit at first too!" is a pretty terrible way of promoting the record.

I hear it as a double-meaning. Yes there's the obvious 'Great day to go surfing dudes' meaning, but given the defeated native American on the front cover, the paranoiac environmentalism of songs like 'Don't Go Near The Water' and the utter lack of surfing songs, I definitely understand the meaning to be 'Surf's up, it's finished, it's done with' in this case.
