what were everyone's favorites from this year? what do you think will place high on the RA list? FACT list? other media outlets, etc
― dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Wednesday, 18 December 2013 13:38 (eleven years ago)
Stuff I liked this year: DJ Sprinkles, Rudimental, Toyboy & Robin, Omar S, DJ Rashad, Blondes, Chris Lorenzo, Hannah Wants, MK, DJ Koze, Pharaohs, Floorplan, Kolsch, Beautiful Swimmers.
― MikoMcha, Wednesday, 18 December 2013 13:46 (eleven years ago)
Tale of Us as well.
― MikoMcha, Wednesday, 18 December 2013 13:47 (eleven years ago)
A lot of the above and Max Loderbauer, Maxmillion Dunbar, tm404, Segue, Ø [Phase] are others that I enjoyed.
― xelab, Wednesday, 18 December 2013 14:10 (eleven years ago)
Machinedrum is probably my favourite in this area. I enjoyed Natasha Kmeto's debut as well, haven't seen her mentioned much round here.
― I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Wednesday, 18 December 2013 14:25 (eleven years ago)
Trentemoller and Four Tet both a little disappointing. Haven't had a decent crack at the BoC yet.
― I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Wednesday, 18 December 2013 14:28 (eleven years ago)
Oh I like the first disc of the Zomby release a lot, second not so much.
― I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Wednesday, 18 December 2013 14:31 (eleven years ago)
Dinky's new album grew on me, it's probably my favourite electronic thing from this year. I even started a thread about it, but no one cared... :(
Dinky - Dimension D
I haven't yet fully digested Laurel Halo's new album, but I think it might make it to my top 10 as well. On the more dancier side, the Kölsch stuff and the DJ Sprinkles comp are well worth the ILM hype. Donato Dozzy's new remix album, OTOH, was a disappointment; it sounds pretty much like some paint-by-numbers 1990s ambient record.
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 18 December 2013 14:33 (eleven years ago)
Yeah Halo record was pretty good. I think I preferred the EPs beforehand though. Definitely Sex Mission.
― MikoMcha, Wednesday, 18 December 2013 14:38 (eleven years ago)
Should mention Black Butter records as well, and the many DJ Q mixes throughout the year.
― MikoMcha, Wednesday, 18 December 2013 14:39 (eleven years ago)
Albums-wise, the Kolsch album is super-fun throughout, I really like the Machinedrum album despite it being on paper totally not my thing at all. The Stellar Om Source album is probably my favourite techno album this year. Didn't get into Maximilion Dunbar at all until it suddenly clicked with me about a month ago, the prettier stuff in the second half in particular. Segue's 'Pacifica' is gorgeous throughout, like a really lush, textured, Balearic version of Voices From The Lake. Also DJ Koze, Maya Jane Coles, Lusine, Holden, Hecker etc. Been a great year for the more abstract end of things. Also all the Black Butter-centric UK pop-house stuff.
Tracks-wise, loads of stuff, will post a list later when I get round to it, although I've been clubbing maybe twice this year and have been almost totally insulated from what's actually popular on dancefloors, so there's bound to be loads of great stuff I've not heard in the RA poll.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 18 December 2013 14:46 (eleven years ago)
I'm probably one of the few who really likes the Trentemoller album, but that's Sunday evening music really.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 18 December 2013 14:47 (eleven years ago)
I quite liked that Mr G - Retrospective.
― MikoMcha, Wednesday, 18 December 2013 14:55 (eleven years ago)
It's gotta be Exai for me. Hasn't done well in many lists so far.
Otherwise Logos, DJs Rashad & Koze and Special Request
― cheeseburger, Wednesday, 18 December 2013 15:13 (eleven years ago)
I picked up the BoC on its release and have listened to it only a handful of times. Not entirely sure why, just haven't connected with it at all.
Exai on the other hand is huge. Perhaps the length of it was too much for some people.
― millmeister, Wednesday, 18 December 2013 15:23 (eleven years ago)
I enjoyed BoC, but was never compelled to come back to it like the first two, which still kick my ass whenever I put one on
― cheeseburger, Wednesday, 18 December 2013 15:40 (eleven years ago)
The thing with Exai, I think, is that it works well as a complete album if you have the patience, but just as well as something to dip in and out of in whatever way you like. In the WATMM thing they said they considered it as 4 EPs, one with the first 5 tracks then the rest of the tracks grouped in 4s. The last 4 are some of their best work IMO
― cheeseburger, Wednesday, 18 December 2013 15:43 (eleven years ago)
I think I'm gonna have finally pull the trigger and check out Exai.
Pretty sure I haven't heard an Autechre album since Confield tho.
― MikoMcha, Wednesday, 18 December 2013 15:49 (eleven years ago)
I really liked the Mano Le Tough album.

I liked the new Sally Shapiro album a lot. Also Dumb Disco Ideas, a couple of the Koze tracks, Rainbow Arabia, !!! was surprisingly good, Kolsch, Classixx, CFCF Music for Objects EP, Factory Floor.

Wow, that Vice article is truly terrible.
― MikoMcha, Wednesday, 18 December 2013 16:32 (eleven years ago)
I don't know, that Boards of Canada campaign was pretty tiring.
― millmeister, Wednesday, 18 December 2013 16:53 (eleven years ago)

The Ron Morelli quote was a definite lol.
― millmeister, Wednesday, 18 December 2013 17:02 (eleven years ago)
The tone of that article is really cringey, even by Vice standards - "But while I do love all you artsy fuckers, I’m here to shake it up a little bit." - "That's cool. While y’all are enjoying the live PA sausage fest and standing with your arms crossed watching a dude in a turtleneck slide faders up and down on a mixer, I’ll be over here dancing on top of stuff and talking to babes. Later!"
:/
"The only thing more pretentious than Boiler Room is trolling the Boiler Room."
Since when is the Boiler Room pretentious, am I missing something?
― MikoMcha, Wednesday, 18 December 2013 17:31 (eleven years ago)
I think the actual picks, on the other hand, are totally fine and mostly otm. Outsider House and Noise Kids Have Techno Careers are kind of the same phenomenon, but whatever.

Otherwise, DJ Sprinkles all around.

favorite stuff so far: joey anderson, xosar, creme organization, omar s. feel like xosar had a great year and is a bit underrated.
kyle hall and funkineven were on-point. dj haus was a rush. the pal joey compilation on bbe was fantastic and not at all what i was expecting. robert hood put out some great stuff but he keeps leaving me a bit underwhelmed tbh. trevino was a highlight. heard a lot of noisy/dark techno i wasn't into, but will stan for that vatican shadow album.
for house house, dungeon meat - the fuck off track might be my track of the year. still need to sample from the jackin house thread, have no idea what's going on there.
oh yeah this year i heard some edm that is pretty dope.
xps nice lists!

definitely feel like anthony naples put out secretly funky tracks in "outsider house" garb or w/e. same with dixon avenue basement jams re: "deep house revival."
dark sky - the click
oh i need to hear this! i really loved in brackets in spite of having mixed feelings about that kind of akufen-ish thing but it totally won me over by being gorgeous and perfect and not cloying.
― From the Album No Baby for You! (Matt P), Wednesday, 18 December 2013 18:24 (eleven years ago)
naples is not quite as noisy as all that ... i think of him more as being in the lineage of classic abstract and fuzzy detroit techno rather than "outsider house"

my 2013 singles picks, which do include other footwork and so-inspired tracks (notes from my site update):
1. DJ Rashad - Rollin’ EPChicago juke artist DJ Rashad got a lot of attention this year, and for good reason. He’s at the forefront of producers making “footwork“ — think very fast, 808-driven instrumental hip-hop — music made for lovers of bass music, and the stepping ability keep up. This EP on UK label Hyperdub broke Rashad to a wider audience, and also features him flirting with another 2013 trend, jungle/hardcore breakbeats.
2. Archie Pelago - Subway Gothic EPNew York trio Archie Pelago make a kind of elctro-acoustic deep house. It’s dreamy, chill, and goes down perfectly in your earbuds on a long, gray subway ride.
3. Mark Pritchard - Ghosts EP & Lock Off EPUK bass artist Mark Pritchard has been making dance music for over 20 years in various guises, most recently as part of the juke-influenced group Africa Hi-Tech. These EPs continue in that direction, though with more jungle flavor, and a knack for minimalist sheen. IMO, one of the most consistently interesting producers working.
4. Romare - Love Songs: Part One EPRomare is a French producer based in London, and makes down-tempo bass music. This EP is a good example of how to apply 808 beats to lounge-y atmospherics (and even a strange cover of Peggy Lee’s “Fever”), and not come off cloyingly.
5. Addison Groove & Sam Binga - BS3 EPUK bass music producers Addison Groove and Sam Binga have issued lots of music on their own, and in collaboration, the last couple of years, but this pairing features everything that’s great about their sounds: footwork-tempos, driving momentum, sleek synths, perfect vocal samples. Professionalism!
6. Eagles for Hands - Hot Telescopic EPSelf-issued UK house and down-tempo. Pretty under-the-radar as far as this stuff goes, but I played both tracks on this EP more than a lot of other more well-known stuff this year, and would be surprised if he remains unknown for long.
7. Blacksmif - “Kang’s Odyssey” (from the How the Fly Saved the River EP)Great, jazzy house from UK producer Yemi “Blacksmif” Olagbaiye. Breezy, and perfectly paced for dancin’.
8. Tessela - Hackney Parrot EPAce jungle/garage-inspired bass music from UK’s Ed “Tessela” Russell. This was one of the earlier entries in the nu-jungle sweepstakes of 2013, but still one of the best, and most energetic.
9. Lone - Airglow Fires EPUK’s Lone makes really cool music! This EP is actually pretty chill by his standards, featuring lush synth pads and 90s house/garage beats, but with Lone’s unmistakable bounce. He’s one of those guys who makes me curious about whatever he's doing now.
10. Cid Rim - “Mute City” (from the Mute City EP)I never heard Cid Rim before this year, but glad I did. The title track from his latest EP is a bouncy, practically grinning take on 808-powered bass music. I wouldn’t even call this “dance” music, but it would make an insanely GREAT old school Nintendo soundtrack.
HONORABLE MENTIONS11. 813 – “The Whaler”12. Siriusmo – “Stinky Wig (Anstam’s Bustified Breaks mix)”13. Kevin McPhee – “Who Loves You”14. Alizz – Whoa! EP15. Champion – “Bowser’s Castle”16. Sun Glitters – “Mouth (Shigeto mix)”17. Dawn Day Night – “Mister Meanor”18. Helix – “Linn Jam”19. Templa – “Fracture”20. Beau Wanzer – “Balls of Steel”

Thought it was curious that Reynolds went out of his way to list the Floorplan record under "you fill me with... inertia." Sure, it's got a fair amount of straight retro appeal, but surely no more than Special Request. I certainly didn't see many people hyping Floorplan either...

Not sure but Shigeto's "Perfect Crime" sounds like it might have an After Dinner sample in it.

I'm really struggling to get my head around the much repped 100% Galcher mix tape. Some pretty listless rapping over uninspired deep house....hmmmm.
― millmeister, Monday, 6 January 2014 11:26 (eleven years ago)
or is it uninspired rapping over listless deep house?

oh? i don't know After Dinner, but i don't hear anything that sounds sampled in that track.

On succeeding listens this seemed more doubtful to me, because the snippet of music I was focused on continued in a way I don't remember it. After Dinner was a Japanese art rock sort of outfit. For example (I'm not sure this is the track I had in mind).

Or avant-pop. Etc.

I haven't been following new music enough lately- could any of you recommend your favorites this year in the vein of (any of these) Isolee, Actress, Stott, Holden, Hecker, Emeralds? Those are just some artists I've been binge listening to lately.

Loved all 3 recommendations! Thanks again.
This may be my most clueless post (hopefully) but what does this make me- a house/experimental fan?

i would love to see some kind of hype flowchart on that one. i remember seeing white material ("what, like beautiful drapes?") mentioned on the bobbins thread in october and then suddenly it was fucking everywhere, everyone riffing on "working man's techno" (rmde).
