It probably can be said, that more than likely the first good compilation of the best musicians is the strongest distillation. Many of these are those type of collections.

The Who- Meaty Beaty Big & Bouncy

This is a good one of their early singles up through Tommy, especially as it captures the high energy of the Who before Townshend went all dour and serious.

somehow I remembered Singles Going Steady being too long to qualify. it isn't! an obvious member of this group. The Blasters Collection, however, is a full hour long!
