On first glance, a pretty horrible list. My first instinct is "Hurts So Good"

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Monday, 23 December 2013 15:47 (eleven years ago)

Pretty great list!

the objections to Drake from non-REAL HIPHOP people (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 23 December 2013 15:48 (eleven years ago)

Going with "Being With You," probably my favorite song here.

And is it just me, or has "Woman" not aged particularly well?

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, 23 December 2013 15:49 (eleven years ago)

I should caveat that I don't know several of these.

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Monday, 23 December 2013 15:52 (eleven years ago)

Many stinkers here. I chose "Being With You".

zanarkand bozo (abanana), Monday, 23 December 2013 15:58 (eleven years ago)

Going with Eddy Grant. But thinking this list is too heavy with Adult Contemporary tracks for most people.

jetfan, Monday, 23 December 2013 15:59 (eleven years ago)

Electric Avenue and/or Time (Clock of the Heart)

g simmel, Monday, 23 December 2013 16:15 (eleven years ago)

I knew it! This reads like a list of songs that were on the radio while I drove around with my mom. We used to sing "Electric Avenue", but "Queen of Hearts" was my first favorite song from the radio. Total sound of my childhood being driven from here to there. Impossible to choose.

mambo jumbo (La Lechera), Monday, 23 December 2013 16:19 (eleven years ago)

"Say It Isn't So," one of the great comp-only hits and one of H&O's very best. Second place: "Slow Hand." Third: "Time (Clock of the Heart)."

"Hurt So Good". Runners up: "Start Me Up", "Electric Avenue" and "Making Love Out of Nothing At All". Good list!

o. nate, Monday, 23 December 2013 16:43 (eleven years ago)

I didn't even realize Jeopardy was in there. That song made me go totally bananas, it's one of the first songs where I remember distinctly liking the beat. These songs are like my childhood friends :-/

mambo jumbo (La Lechera), Monday, 23 December 2013 16:51 (eleven years ago)

I remember a couple of DJs getting into an hours-long discussion about whether or not "fishes in the ocean" (from "Longer") was grammatically correct, seeing as how the plural of fish is fish.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, 23 December 2013 16:58 (eleven years ago)

Jesus Christ. Middle school. I can't. This is just "all the stuff they played on the radio when you first moved to the US and how awful it was compared to what was going on back home."

I'm going to be perverse and vote Juice Newton because I heard it recently and still liked it as much as I did when I was 10. Probably because it made me feel about 10.

Branwell Bell, Monday, 23 December 2013 17:13 (eleven years ago)

These songs are like my childhood friends

lol otm

mookieproof, Monday, 23 December 2013 17:16 (eleven years ago)

i always thought he was saying "the fish is in the ocean" but i was 5-7 during this period
being in the car with me must have been hellish

mambo jumbo (La Lechera), Monday, 23 December 2013 17:16 (eleven years ago)

Gotta be Smokey. A criminally underrated song from my all-time favorite Motown guy.

kornrulez6969, Monday, 23 December 2013 17:24 (eleven years ago)

The production lets the song down imo (and he didn't produce it)

the objections to Drake from non-REAL HIPHOP people (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 23 December 2013 17:26 (eleven years ago)

Go-Go's. That song is untarnishable.

"Start Me Up" vs. "We Got The Beat"

I didn't know "Time" went all the way to #2. "Do You Really..." seems like a much bigger hit and better remembered. Love both, but "Time" was always my favorite.

LeRooLeRoo, Tuesday, 24 December 2013 05:01 (eleven years ago)

for those first couple albums, culture club had nothing but big hits. their first six singles all went top 10 in the u.s.

the rock and roll hall of fame, for whatever smidgen that's worth, has officially gone on the record in favor of "time," too.

fact checking cuz, Tuesday, 24 December 2013 08:25 (eleven years ago)

'Time' coulda been so much more though.

brotherlovesdub, Tuesday, 24 December 2013 08:28 (eleven years ago)

Eddy
Fucking
Grant
Obv

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Tuesday, 24 December 2013 08:52 (eleven years ago)

I have always had this weird fascination with "Gloria" - its so unusual hearing a second person, all-female narrative in a pop hit. Especially since there isn't any moral judgement involved. It's like she's commenting on something she saw on "General Hospital" or whatever. Also this was probably the first song in which I consciously concentrated on the bass line with awareness of the sound of the instrument.

Nevertheless, nothing else up there kicks like "Electric Ave". Althought the Gogos come close.

Sir Lord Baltimora (Myonga Vön Bontee), Tuesday, 24 December 2013 15:56 (eleven years ago)

Pretty great list!

― the objections to Drake from non-REAL HIPHOP people (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, December 23, 2013

yeah. almost impossible to decide. easier to remove a few hack-y songs from consideration than pick a favorite, (believe it or not).

Daniel, Esq 2, Tuesday, 24 December 2013 15:59 (eleven years ago)

We Got the Beat. (Don't like most of this list very much.)

_Rudipherous_, Tuesday, 24 December 2013 16:00 (eleven years ago)

Not seeing love for "Slow Hand"!

the objections to Drake from non-REAL HIPHOP people (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 24 December 2013 16:01 (eleven years ago)

seeing just the two of us and ride like the wind take me back to being a kid again.

Daniel, Esq 2, Tuesday, 24 December 2013 16:03 (eleven years ago)

I missed Just the Two of Us! That might have defeated the Go-Go's (for me).

_Rudipherous_, Tuesday, 24 December 2013 16:05 (eleven years ago)

omg i didn't see "slow hand"... would have been my runner up

dyl, Tuesday, 24 December 2013 16:09 (eleven years ago)

30% of us are unable to read a list, apparently.

_Rudipherous_, Tuesday, 24 December 2013 16:15 (eleven years ago)

it's tough

dyl, Tuesday, 24 December 2013 17:31 (eleven years ago)

"slow hand" is prolly my favourite of those pre-electro 80s Pointers hits, yeah

Sir Lord Baltimora (Myonga Vön Bontee), Tuesday, 24 December 2013 17:36 (eleven years ago)

juice newton over laura branigan, h&o, go-gos

balls, Tuesday, 24 December 2013 18:17 (eleven years ago)

if i were in the majors "slow hand" would be my walk-up song

my whole family is catholic so look at the pickle i'm in (zachlyon), Tuesday, 24 December 2013 20:08 (eleven years ago)

A good reminder that my "golden age" of top 40 listening had loads of crap.

Voted Go-Go's.

"Don't Talk to Strangers" is pretty damn solid: the midtempo version of "Jessie's Girl," complete with hard strums and the lyric "Did you fall at first sight or did you need a shove?"

Think I would've voted for the Go-Go's too. Glad to see that Spinners jam get three votes, though.

timellison, Saturday, 4 January 2014 01:34 (eleven years ago)

I really thought Electric Avenue was gonna win this. Really close one!

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Saturday, 4 January 2014 04:32 (eleven years ago)

"We Got The Beat" 45 is amazing at 33.3 rpm.

tbd (Eazy), Saturday, 4 January 2014 04:49 (eleven years ago)

I kinda dig that Foreigner song. I wish I'd have voted
