Call it "The Very Best Of Will Oldham". What should feature? See: Will Oldham, Palace, Palace Brothers, Bonny Billy, Bonnie Prince Billy, the list goes on...

I beg for your suggestions of the creme de la creme, as there is so very much to choose from.

Sean@tangmonkey (Sean M), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 03:22 (twenty-three years ago)

"idle hands are the devil's plaything"
"pushkin"
"riding"
"(i was drunk at the) pulpit"
"kid of harith"
"gulf shores"
"an arrow through the bitch"
"i send my love to you"
"madeline mary"
"antagonism"
"i see a darkness"
"you will miss me when i burn"
"every mother's son"
"a king at night"
"raining in darling"
"rich wife full of happiness"

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 03:44 (twenty-three years ago)

just put any shit on it, whatever. & remember not to punch out the tabs!

unknown or illegal user (doorag), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 04:34 (twenty-three years ago)

My favorites that aren't on Jess' list:

"you have cum in your hair an dyour dick is hanging out"
"we all, us three, will ride"

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 09:30 (twenty-three years ago)

"agnes queen of sorrow" (I think that's what it's called), you know the first song from Palace Songs.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 09:34 (twenty-three years ago)

"Untitled" (the live version, preferably).
"New Partner".
"One With the Birds".

Andrew Norman, Tuesday, 15 October 2002 11:30 (twenty-three years ago)

His backing vocals on Songs: Ohia's Be Your Own Guide (which appeared on the My Morning Jacket Split) would be a nice addition.

christoff (christoff), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 12:43 (twenty-three years ago)

It's a difficult one all right. Might be easier to start off with a compilation of songs that he has covered. He really knows
how to put a new spin on a song

little boy blue II (bobby bland)
dreaming my dreams (the cranberries)
the eagle and the hawk (john denver)
polestar of my life (hare krishna song or any of the krishna songs on the blue lotus feet cd)
brother warrior (kate wolf)
crying in the chapel (darrell glenn)
winter lady (leonard cohen)
in my mind (david allan coe)
juts to see you smile (tim mcgraw)
horse (sally timms)
sweeter than anything (pj harey)
big balls (ac/dc)
little boy blue I (george jones)

[of course we have to leave off songs that he has covered only live
e.g. sinead o'connor's all babies, prince's the cross, don't cry for me argentina, john cougar's jack and diane, misfits' ast carress, bob dylan's new pony, madonna's don't tell me. List goes on and on, Dolly Parton, Bob Marley, Ramones etc.]

[or you could do one with songs that he has adapted e.g. the risen lord with lyrics taken from a dh lawrence poem, 64 with lyrics from the Indian nobel laurate - Tagore (as is all of Get On Jolly), dick gaughan's 'both sides the tweed' becomes 'idea and tweed'
on joya. ohio riverboat song is a rewriting of loch tay boat song.]

But to stop digressing, songs for a C90 not mentioned so far.....

ohio river boat song (the first single not counting the sundowner's colloboration)
o paul (a beautiful song about stomach indigestion)
come in
i am a cinematograher
christmastime in the mountians (from the wonderful mini album 'hope')
the mountain
disorder
a sucker's evening
the gator
black dissimulation
minor place
nomadic revery
southside of the world (same single as one with the birds)
just to see my holly home

News from the BPB camp anyway is that the forthcoming single and album have been cancelled (was all recorded and ready to go) and instead there is going to be an ep. He's playing a couple of one off dates, there's one in London's Barbican, Istanbul and San Fran. There is a 12" with himself, Jason Molina and Alasdair Roberts just out at the moment also.

Eamonn (Eamonn Maher), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 12:48 (twenty-three years ago)

he did a song for a compilation called "we have a fuzzbox and we're going to use it" (i think) where he used a 303 & 909 (? haha) and the song was called "I am drinking again" and he manages to make it sound so desolate. This lap, lap, lap, wet blip leads in and it sounds like the hollow of a horses hoof, all dry and cavernous, like standing inside the ringing of a bell, without the ringing, then that still drops, and melisma (haha!! melisma!!! HAHA!!) "I am drinking"... and the nail gun's trigger is squeezed: "again." Ouch.

That. And everything that Jess said esp. Riding, Pushkin, & Will You Miss Me.

david h (david h), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 14:33 (twenty-three years ago)

And "a dream of the sea".

david h (david h), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 14:35 (twenty-three years ago)

David that comp. was called "At Home with the Groovebox" and it was on Grand Royal.

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 14:37 (twenty-three years ago)

That is correkt. I have it, just not here in front of me. OK to justify this post: I will tell you that I have broken the small finger on my right hand. I punched the ground angrily and full force on Friday while playing football. I was then shoulder barged on Sunday right on my pinkie. It hurts like hell. I'm out.

david h (david h), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 14:43 (twenty-three years ago)

"for the mekons, et al"
"the weaker soldier"
"west palm beach"
"patience"

eight months pass...
This guy, bonnie prince billy, oughta be thrashed for his rendition of one of John Denver's most beautiful songs, The Eagle and the Hawk. What a horrid, horrid song he did... if JD was in a grave, I'm sure he'd be spinning like a top. I'm telling every JD fan I know to NEVER EVER listen to Oldham's version of this song, it totally and utterly sucks.

What the hell he was thinking when he did this, I have no idea. It has no joy, no connection to the eagle and the hawk that John Denver so clearly has, it's slow, dull and boring, not uplifting and joyous as John does it.

If you want to hear the REAL rendition of it, I'd suggest you get a JD album and hear it from the master, not this p.o.s.

Peace out,

a John Denver fan

jdspirit2004, Sunday, 28 November 2004 00:47 (twenty years ago)

who'd have thunk John Denver fans would be so full of venom and rage-ahol?

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Sunday, 28 November 2004 00:51 (twenty years ago)

I listened to my copy of Lost Blues today, and now the electric version of "Riding" skips. fuck!

Ian John50n (orion), Sunday, 28 November 2004 01:21 (twenty years ago)

that version is weird. i'm not into that chanting in the beginning

it's all about the new album w/ Sweeney dude

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Sunday, 28 November 2004 01:28 (twenty years ago)
