think you deserve an award for the most cravenly abject collection of music in an ILM poll

You just murdered my soul.

"Madness"

Bee OK, Saturday, 28 December 2013 06:21 (twelve years ago)

out of the ones i've heard, muse is the only one i like.

my whole family is catholic so look at the pickle i'm in (zachlyon), Saturday, 28 December 2013 06:24 (twelve years ago)

Thanks for continuing this.

On another note, nobody likes Sweater Weather? Gets my vote.

LimbsKing, Saturday, 28 December 2013 21:33 (twelve years ago)

was my fav on rock radio this year (but voted for "Madness" itt which was last year): http://narrowcast.blogspot.com/2013/12/the-20-best-rockalternative-radio-hits.html

"madness" is so great

dyl, Sunday, 29 December 2013 00:35 (twelve years ago)

This is probably a good time to admit thay I'm turning into a fairly large Cage the Elephant fan

Quarterpayne McRapp (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 29 December 2013 01:27 (twelve years ago)

great songs!

billstevejim, Sunday, 29 December 2013 01:36 (twelve years ago)

whooaa!!

billstevejim, Sunday, 29 December 2013 01:42 (twelve years ago)

After months of lurking, this is the poll that finally compelled me to register and vote for "Madness," because the rest of the list, OMG THE HORROR

Sandy, Tuesday, 31 December 2013 05:25 (twelve years ago)

And I wonder why I"m feeling a little burned out on music...

This and too much EDM.

Josiah Alan, Tuesday, 31 December 2013 09:15 (twelve years ago)

My gut feeling is that this stuff is a blind spot for ILM's poptimism. Voting Fitz.

timellison, Tuesday, 31 December 2013 19:04 (twelve years ago)

At a certain point, I couldn't deny "Ho Hey" or "I Will Wait" and realized I was being knee-jerk about it. (Maybe the fun. song, too, though I don't understand the lyric.)

timellison, Wednesday, 1 January 2014 03:02 (twelve years ago)

If it wasn't a blind spot for ILM's poptimism I'd have probably been permabanned by now

Lol what number is imago?

Quarterpayne McRapp (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 1 January 2014 03:51 (twelve years ago)

"I Will Wait" is the fucking worst. "Madness" by a distressingly large margin.

Simon H., Wednesday, 1 January 2014 04:23 (twelve years ago)

haven't heard 2/3 of these

the capital cities song is probably the most ok out of the ones i've heard

Mmm yes hello (crüt), Wednesday, 1 January 2014 08:57 (twelve years ago)

"Out Of My League" is the only song here besides "Madness" that doesn't make me want to hurt music.
But "Madness" is so great and "Out of My League" is just decent.

Sandy, Wednesday, 1 January 2014 10:18 (twelve years ago)

tbh I can remember drunkenly singing along to Some Nights. Didn't vote for it though, but I don't viscerally hate it like "Ho Hey" or "Radioactive"

Viceroy, Thursday, 2 January 2014 01:04 (twelve years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Sunday, 5 January 2014 00:01 (twelve years ago)

do we have a CtE thread? maybe I shd just go there...?

Capital Cities – "Safe and Sound"

I actually liked this one a lot. Not sure what's Modern Rock about it though.

skip, Sunday, 5 January 2014 05:18 (twelve years ago)

Billboard has an almost avant take on what "rock music" means.

Simon H., Sunday, 5 January 2014 05:32 (twelve years ago)

i think the main way for labels to get any dudes with beards onto the pop charts these days is thru alternative radio, no matter what the actual music sounds like

dyl, Sunday, 5 January 2014 12:07 (twelve years ago)

kinda cute that Muse is about to win an ILM poll in 2014

to be fair some of their old stuff is decent

VENIET IMBER (imago), Sunday, 5 January 2014 12:11 (twelve years ago)

"Madness" only got like 3 votes in the 2012 tracks poll, i'm glad ILM came around to it, it's very Zooropa

never liked "Safe And Sound" but the failed 2nd Capital Cities single is kinda great:

alt-rock radio is just in a very 'pop' state since "Pumped Up Kicks" and "We Are Young." it's like 1997 all over again.

what's really funny is what's on the "mainstream" rock chart now, i'm sure you've never even heard of most of these bands:

some dude, Sunday, 5 January 2014 14:32 (twelve years ago)

i've never heard of most of these bands

eclectic husbandry (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 5 January 2014 15:36 (twelve years ago)

what on earth

lol i didn't know shinedown still existed

dyl, Sunday, 5 January 2014 16:56 (twelve years ago)

i was resisting listening to "kangaroo court" due to its title but it's better than i expected

dyl, Sunday, 5 January 2014 16:57 (twelve years ago)

i know all those mainstream rock acts but i can barely even hear them in my city anymore, the top 40 format is so omnipresent now, not that i'm displeased that i cant hear the latest five finger death punch. ive gone back and forth on whether i dislike or like that ilm doesnt take that sphere of music seriously, on the balance i'm probably happy not to read challops about how great the new chevelle song is

Hungry4Ass, Sunday, 5 January 2014 16:59 (twelve years ago)

is that OneRepublic song that i feel like ive involuntarily heard 900,000 times in the last 7 days a mdoern rock song. ive gone through a complicated series of feelings about it

Hungry4Ass, Sunday, 5 January 2014 17:03 (twelve years ago)

No wonder the Eagles still sell so many records.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Sunday, 5 January 2014 17:12 (twelve years ago)

I don't think OneRepublic have ever made an appearance on the modern rock chart, they're more of a Triple A/adult contemporary radio type of band

Frontier Psychiatrist, Sunday, 5 January 2014 17:15 (twelve years ago)

Safe And Sound over Madness

da croupier, Sunday, 5 January 2014 17:44 (twelve years ago)

lol I have definitely posted challops about how great various new Chavelle songs were. They're like a poptimist Tool/Deftones ripoff. The main guy even sings along to a pre-recorded vocal track when they perform!

some dude, Sunday, 5 January 2014 18:07 (twelve years ago)

lol

Hungry4Ass, Sunday, 5 January 2014 18:40 (twelve years ago)

some dude otm re Chevelle

i was not even sure which lines were the song names and band names and album names until i got to one that said 'pearl jam' but right next to that it said 'lightning bolt' and for a second i was like er well wait

j., Monday, 6 January 2014 00:11 (twelve years ago)

Stone Sour, Shinedown, A Perfect Circle, Korn -- used to be big on Modern Rock radio, but I guess drifted over at some point and never came back?

LimbsKing, Monday, 6 January 2014 00:17 (twelve years ago)

modern rock and mainstream rock had a pretty decent overlap at one point iirc, so maybe they were common to both and then sort of ended up more on modern? idk tho.

dyl, Monday, 6 January 2014 00:21 (twelve years ago)

yeah as recently as like 2010 there was a ton of crossover between "modern" and "mainstream," but as i said, in the post-Foster The People era alt radio turned hard away from Shinedown-type bands.

some dude, Monday, 6 January 2014 00:56 (twelve years ago)

I live in Pittsburgh and most of these mainstream acts get played on our "modern" iHeartRadio station on Sunday nights, during the "Edge of the X" show, which is supposed to be... the more cutting edge stuff, lmfao.
How did "Madness" not win this poll? UGH I hate Lorde.

Sandy, Monday, 6 January 2014 02:45 (twelve years ago)

aw, i still like that alex clare song

maura, Monday, 6 January 2014 13:15 (twelve years ago)

'some nights' in a walk tho (i didn't vote in time)

maura, Monday, 6 January 2014 13:15 (twelve years ago)

the Alex Clare holds up well but it also now feels like a harbinger of the old-man-hat-voice-over-beatz trend of "Wake Me Up"/"Radioactive"

some dude, Monday, 6 January 2014 14:21 (twelve years ago)

"Too Close" reminded me of INXS more than anything else when i first heard it so finding out the dude was a beardo definitely ruined the illusion a little for me

some dude, Monday, 6 January 2014 14:22 (twelve years ago)

haha wow, was not at all expecting Lorde to win (with more than twice of Muse's votes, too)

still, "Sweater Weather" is my favorite of these
