After months of lurking, this is the poll that finally compelled me to register and vote for "Madness," because the rest of the list, OMG THE HORROR

And I wonder why I"m feeling a little burned out on music...

This and too much EDM.

My gut feeling is that this stuff is a blind spot for ILM's poptimism. Voting Fitz.

At a certain point, I couldn't deny "Ho Hey" or "I Will Wait" and realized I was being knee-jerk about it. (Maybe the fun. song, too, though I don't understand the lyric.)

"I Will Wait" is the fucking worst. "Madness" by a distressingly large margin.

the capital cities song is probably the most ok out of the ones i've heard

"Out Of My League" is the only song here besides "Madness" that doesn't make me want to hurt music.
But "Madness" is so great and "Out of My League" is just decent.

tbh I can remember drunkenly singing along to Some Nights. Didn't vote for it though, but I don't viscerally hate it like "Ho Hey" or "Radioactive"

I actually liked this one a lot. Not sure what's Modern Rock about it though.

i think the main way for labels to get any dudes with beards onto the pop charts these days is thru alternative radio, no matter what the actual music sounds like

alt-rock radio is just in a very 'pop' state since "Pumped Up Kicks" and "We Are Young." it's like 1997 all over again.

lol i didn't know shinedown still existed

i was resisting listening to "kangaroo court" due to its title but it's better than i expected

i know all those mainstream rock acts but i can barely even hear them in my city anymore, the top 40 format is so omnipresent now, not that i'm displeased that i cant hear the latest five finger death punch. ive gone back and forth on whether i dislike or like that ilm doesnt take that sphere of music seriously, on the balance i'm probably happy not to read challops about how great the new chevelle song is

is that OneRepublic song that i feel like ive involuntarily heard 900,000 times in the last 7 days a mdoern rock song. ive gone through a complicated series of feelings about it

No wonder the Eagles still sell so many records.

I don't think OneRepublic have ever made an appearance on the modern rock chart, they're more of a Triple A/adult contemporary radio type of band

lol I have definitely posted challops about how great various new Chavelle songs were. They're like a poptimist Tool/Deftones ripoff. The main guy even sings along to a pre-recorded vocal track when they perform!

i was not even sure which lines were the song names and band names and album names until i got to one that said 'pearl jam' but right next to that it said 'lightning bolt' and for a second i was like er well wait

Stone Sour, Shinedown, A Perfect Circle, Korn -- used to be big on Modern Rock radio, but I guess drifted over at some point and never came back?

modern rock and mainstream rock had a pretty decent overlap at one point iirc, so maybe they were common to both and then sort of ended up more on modern? idk tho.

yeah as recently as like 2010 there was a ton of crossover between "modern" and "mainstream," but as i said, in the post-Foster The People era alt radio turned hard away from Shinedown-type bands.

I live in Pittsburgh and most of these mainstream acts get played on our "modern" iHeartRadio station on Sunday nights, during the "Edge of the X" show, which is supposed to be... the more cutting edge stuff, lmfao.

the Alex Clare holds up well but it also now feels like a harbinger of the old-man-hat-voice-over-beatz trend of "Wake Me Up"/"Radioactive"

"Too Close" reminded me of INXS more than anything else when i first heard it so finding out the dude was a beardo definitely ruined the illusion a little for me

haha wow, was not at all expecting Lorde to win (with more than twice of Muse's votes, too)

still, "Sweater Weather" is my favorite of these
